I heard that quote from a beautiful, talented musician who is also a great friend of mine. We’ve known each other for years and I’ve watched her grow as an artist and all I can say is WOW. She is epic. She writes from her soul and plays from the very same place. Watching her feels good and hearing her music makes you want to sway and nod your head to the rhythm. I was sitting on the couch in my living room as I called Michaela McClain for this interview. The moment she answered the phone, I could tell she was sort of an old soul. I was suddenly transported back in time, to a decade I never saw, where I would have been wearing flowers in my hair. A decade that housed singers like Joni Mitchell and Carole King, a decade when music was pure and had serious soul. Simultaneously I was in a coffeehouse in the 2000s listening to Norah Jones or Adele, sipping an espresso and catching up with an old friend. Michaela McClain feels like just that, an old friend.

Within a few minutes of the interview I would have probably told you I had been lifelong best friends with the 27-yr-old music teacher from Bernardsville, New Jersey. She has a way of making you feel welcome, and I imagine she captures her listeners in a similar way.

McClain, the youngest of six girls, said her mom likes to say she started singing before she started talking. It is clear that music consumes McClain's life, and she is proud of it. As a music teacher for kids from Pre-K to Eighth grade, as well as a musician pursuing a career, McClain spends the majority of her time around music. When I asked her to name her top five favorite albums or songs, I could literally feel her squirming in her chair trying to pick. She had to get back to me two days later.
