When college friends Trey Meek and Matt Geczy went their separate ways after college, they decided that the band couldn't split up.
The duo, with Meek on the West Coast and Geczy on the East Coast, kept writing music and will soon release their fourth album. They plan to play shows locally to support the effort.
Q:How did you start your band, and where did you get the name MG3 from?
A: We started the band in 2001 at Indiana University. The name comes from the initials of my bandmate Matt Geczy and my name, Trey.
Q: Were you a musician when you were a student at Newport Harbor High School?
A: No, I started writing poetry in senior year and started writing music and lyrics in college.
Q: What are your major influences, and who do you sound like?
A: My major influences are Mason Jennings, Jack Johnson and Ben Harper. What do we sound like? We sound like ourselves.
That's kind of a hard question because we're not trying to bite (other artists). We've got our own blend. We're singer-songwriter/indie rock.
Q: Tell me about your bandmate and how you guys work together.
A: Matt's in the Navy. He lives in Washington, D.C., and he's getting transferred to Fort Worth, Texas in October. I haven't seen him in over two years.
I write all the lyrics and send him the lyrics. He creates the song and produces it himself out of his home.
He is the lead singer and lead guitarist; I do the backup singing and backup guitar.
Q: And you guys are about to release your fourth record?
A: Yes, we're about to release "Get Howard" at the end of this month. We're not sure how we're going to release it, hopefully through a record company.
Q: And up until now, you've released your records for free. Why?
A: We make it that way on purpose. You can buy it on Snocap (MySpace's music store) or iTunes soon, but I think it should be available for free so people can listen to it.
Q: Is this something you would want to do full-time if you got the opportunity?
A: Yeah, definitely, but I've got a good opportunity (at work) so I'm going to do it half-and-half.
Q: Where do you see yourself as a musician in five years?
A: We have our own production company, so we see ourselves in a position where we can not only create our own music but take other rising musicians and help them as well.

Fun. That's what you have when you see MG3 live.
MG3 is a music project that was formed in 2001 by Matt Geczy and Trey Meek during their freshman year at Indiana University Bloomington. Over the past 11 years, despite continental gaps in geographic locations, Matt and Trey have continued to write and record new music. They're working chemistry has been written about in newspapers and they have done several interviews over the years. MG3 is currently in the studio working on a new album that's due out July 31st entitled "Virginia". The wide range of Matt's influences attributes to the ecletic and multi-genre infused blend of music that he's developed. Two of the songs off this album, "Slow Your Roll" and "Chasing Stars", are featured on this EPK's streaming music section.
MG3 is a well traveled act, having played all around the country, as well as a performance in Stuttgart, Germany. He has opened up for Timbaland, Teddy Riley & Blackstreet, Kirko Bangz, Dev, Rekapse (Mosley Music Group/Interscope), Kevin Mac, and many others! No matter the size of the crowd, Matt is always sure to put on the best show possible and impress every single person in the room!
Currently based out of Virginia Beach, MG3 will be relocating to Malibu, CA in early September of 2012.
