"Album Review: Meghan Halle"

Halle's first solo effort is a memorable one full of soul and passion

Joe Anello

Despite the never-ending number of artists that use the same arrangement, sometimes there is nothing more moving than a gorgeous voice set against a well-played piano. The soulful Meghan Halle strikes that perfect but simple balance with her first full-length solo album 12th and A.

Schooled by blues and gospel teacher Georgia Louis (whom Louis Armstrong once named as his “musical godchild”), Halle’s training can never be called into question. 12th and A will undoubtedly propel her towards a bright solo career. Writing every song on the album, Halle also provides all of the vocals and keystrokes.

While not musically extravagant or intricate, Halle’s album is supported by great vocals and pleasant melodies. With an amazing range and passionate delivery, Meghan will undoubtedly keep you enthralled on each of the albums fifteen tracks.

“Home” stands out as my favorite track on 12th and A due to its memorable keyboard performance and a shift in Halle’s vocalizations. While most of the album features her constantly shifting gospel style, she keeps things basic with a soft and natural approach on “Home.”

On “Closed Tight,” the groove in Halle’s vocals brilliantly contrasts with the sparing yet fresh piano underlay. I would love to witness Halle perform this song in the comfort of a quiet, dimly lit bar where her singing could be on full display in close proximity.

A love song at its best, “The Longest Day” finds Halle hoping for an end to her waiting for sparks to ignite. Check out this video of its performance, taken from Meghan’s MySpace page.

“Wishing on the Moon” closes out the disc with a delicate number with metaphorical lyrics about the romantic lunar body. Its words illustrate Halle’s fun side on top of a gentle piano backing.

My only legitimate desire is for more up-tempo numbers from Halle. As rock solid as her soulful writing is, I know her voice would do wonders in a more “poppier” setting. However, that’s just me projecting my powerpop proclivities onto a soul singer. In spite of that, 12th and A is a captivating first effort from a captivating songwriter and vocalist. I really hope you give Meghan Halle a listen.

Meghan is currently performing across Connecticut, New York City and upstate New York. Stay tuned for updates to her website for upcoming tour information.

Bio

Meghan has been singing for as long as she can remember, but credits her vocal prowess to call and response sessions she shared with her gospel teacher Georgia Louis, an acclaimed performer who Louis Armstrong named as his musical godchild. Ms. Louis, who has shared the stage with Aretha Franklin, Mahalia Jackson, Dinah Washington, and the Staple Singers, has said of Meghan She is the best young gospel singer that I have worked with, and she was born with an inner spirit that is just phenomenal.

The majority of Meghans high school years were spent performing gospel music in A.M.E. Churches throughout Connecticut. Gospel gave her the freedom to improvise and engage with an audience instantly in the energy of the moment, skills that permanently influenced her performance style. She has performed at Shea Stadium three times, the first at the age of 14. Meghan has also been asked to collaborate on many recordings, and has recorded a handful of gospel songs which remain unreleased.

She has spent the last three years composing infectious, soulful songs while playing the New York City club circuit either solo on piano, or with her band. Her first full-length solo album entitled, 12th and A has just been released this past December.
