Are you on Twitter? If you are, you should follow Mary Sarah aka @marysarahmusic, as beautiful as she talented she is also very generous with the “shout outs.” I can’t tell you how many times I was having a bad day, only to see her sweet smile in my TweetDeck and feel the sunlight of her kind spirit.
A Singer and Songwriter she is passionate about life and God. If even a few teenagers are like her, I feel really good about the future!
Mary Sarah completed a 40-city, KidzBop® World Tour as a featured soloist and ensemble performer in January 2008. A self-assured fourteen-year-old, Mary Sarah began performing at age eight in various regional events and venues. Not long after her debut, she entered vocal training with Tom McKinney Vocal Studios. Vocal training is a discipline she continues to undertake locally with Mr McKinney and Ms. Jane Turner of Rosenberg Music as well as when in Los Angeles with Lis Lewis of The Singer’s Workshop. Mary Sarah aspires to be “a voice for those who don’t have one.” Currently Mary Sarah is in studio working on a full length album with noted producer Dwight A. Baker due out for full release this fall!
Where are you answering these questions from right now?
DESTIN Florida of course! woot! We are on vacation and I’m with my church youth group.
How did you get started in the music business?
I was “discovered” by my dad in the church he pastored when I was signing there. Then I was on Dr. Phil as a future childhood star and I landed the Kidzbop World Tour where we toured for 6 months to over 40 cities where I was a soloist and lead ensemble performer.
What are your fondest musical memories? In your house? In your neighborhood or town?
Singing duets with my dad at the Opry’s in Texas and having a huge moment when I solo’d “Move Along” and the crowd would go wild. That’s when I knew I just had to do this forever. In the house, I have pulled out my guitar when people were over (like cute boys) and sang and their jaws drop. I love that moment when people say “how’d the voice come out of that body”
We hear about some of the odd things artists put in their contract riders, so what’s the one thing you really need in your backstage area?
I need family and friends back there. Almost alway my daddy is there to pray with me before I go on. It may sound silly, but I think it helps A LOT!
What current projects are you working on?
I have a 10 song CD project with writers on it that include Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hanson, Nick Brophy and Mike Seminari (Jesse McCartney’s writer) as well as 6 of the songs I wrote entirely or co-wrote. We have been in front of many record labels with the project and are about to release the music on Itunes!
What are your favorite things to do outside of music?
Hmmm…I love to play tennis, swim and I roller blade a lot. My sister and I goof off a lot too, and my dog sophie and I are TIGHT! Music is such a big part of what I am, it’s so much of my time.
What current event has your eyes and ears? And what are you doing about it?
BP OIL SPILL! I am SO mad about that. We have gone to Destin for like all my life and I can’t even think what it would be like to see the beaches brown and ugly with Oil. I am really angry about it! I am going to join with some local artists and do a benefit concert to raise money for people around here that are being affected like an oyster plant in galveston had to close.
How do you use Social Media in your industry for productivity?
Umm. I think so. I just like doing it because I get to interact with fans and connect with them. I tweet a lot. I’m twitdicted i think.
What is your favorite website?
Facebook not because it’s cool looking but I talk to my friends all the time on it.
If you had a Super Power what would it be?
FLYING!
Which famous musicians do you admire?
Carrie Underwood – because her vocals are so so amazing. She’s from Oklahoma where I was born too. I love Patsy Cline and her music so much, and I think Miranda Lambert’s writing is amazing. Martina McBride’s music always makes me cry and I love her vocals.
What is your favorite movie?
Finding Nemo. It’s never boring to watch and I love the line where Dori says “Just keep swimming, Just keep swimming”. When I get down on stuff like the record company junk I remember that line and just say “Just keep singing, Just keep singing”
Favorite snack?
ICE CREAM. Duh!
What are 3 items you CAN NOT live without?
My family.
My dog sophie.
My music.
Stuff wise, not a whole lot! People are the most important items in our lives I think.
How do you balance your music with other obligations – mate, children, job?
Well, since I’m 15 the mate isn’t a problem LOL! Boys are kinda cute, but mostly annoying you know? School is a challenge but we home school because I perform so much and we travel for meetings so that is really hard sometimes.
Do you get nervous before a performance or a competition?
Yup. Every time. But less than I used to now. I told my dad I used to have like 5 butterflies not it’s only 2. And the bigger the crowd the easier it is.
Do you or your band have a ritual before each performance?
I always pray before I go on that my gift would touch somebody in the audience, and the music I write my encourage them. And I do lots and lots of vocal warmups.
If you could meet anyone in the world dead or alive who would it be, and what would say to them?
Oh wow. Hard question. I think it would be – Jesus – to ask him how he did what he did for others without thinking about himself.
What is your hobby or do you collect anything?
Clothes. Because I’m a girl. :)
What chore to you hate?
Cleaning my room. I can’t see why it’s such a big deal! It’s like my space? But I do it anyway.
Do you have an animal/s? What kind/s? Names?
SOPHIE the uber wonder dog! She’s the sweetest cream colored english dachsund ever! I love her SO much
Apples or Oranges?
ICE CREAM!
Mac or PC?
I’m musician. MAC for music and Itunes and its so easy to use. I have to home school on a PC though.
Ginger or Mary Ann? Which one are you more like?
I had to ask my mom what that meant. I’m Mary Ann with a bit of Ginger spice :)
