New Music Review: Mar Kz's Self-Titled Debut Is Pretty Epic!! Posted by Christie Maillet on February 15, 2010 at 5:22pm

I've just been going through this week's New Music CDs for the Doobie and I came across Mar Kz's debut self-titled album. At first listen, I could definitely hear the classic rock influences infused with an updated sound, something which I usually quite enjoy. After reading their biography, this Canadian band sounds pretty impressive - they've opened for both Bon Jovi and Def Leppard, as well as had their album produced by Larry Gold, who's known for working with Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, and Jay-Z. Pretty epic, I must say. I was definitely pumped to listen to this CD, since I really do love Bon Jovi and anything that rocks out in general.
Their album as a whole is pretty rockin' - you can definitely hear the Bon Jovi influence (besides opening for his band, they also able to talk to him about the music industry and he gave them advice.) and if I listen closely, I can even hear some 90's alternative ala Gin Blossoms or Train. The opener, "It's My Right," is a fantastic anthem and just belts it out. There's something for everyone on this album - slower tracks like "Heaven Take Me Home" mixed with rock out tracks like "Villains and Heroes" or "In Thru The Fire." There's even a bit of a country twang in songs like "Devils Demons And Dust And Angels," and that's totally cool - it just adds to the classic rock feel (like maybe Kansas or Styx). Mar Kz definitely has their own sound, though, and judging by this record, their stage presence must be pretty epic - I totally wouldn't mind seeing what they've got!
If you're interested if what they sound like, the CD will be in the Doobie station as of this Thursday.

MAR KZ LAUNCHES DEBUT CD
PRODUCED BY BON JOVI’S OBIE O’BRIEN
http://www.mar-kz.com http://www.youtube.com/MarKzMusic
Toronto, ON, June, 2009 -- MAR KZ (pronounced mar-kay-zee) based in Woodbridge Ontario fuses Rock, Pop and Classic Rock with a modern sound with shades of influence from Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and Eric Clapton. Bon Jovi's long-time producer/engineer/friend Obie O'Brien produced and engineered MAR KZ‘s debut, self-titled album in Nashville, Tennessee in the Fall of 2008. Larry Gold known for his production work for Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and Jay-Z did string arrangements on the album. Both Bobby Bandiera and Hugh McDonald of the Bon Jovi band guested on guitar and bass guitar. Jerry Cohen played Hammond B (keys). Following the Canadian release of their new CD, MAR KZ plans to do an official release in Nashville – the place in which their album was born.
MAR KZ (formerly known as The Room) won Q107’s Have a Nice Gig competition in 2006, earning them the opening slot for Bon Jovi at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto to a crowd of twenty thousand. That same week they were also honoured at Toronto City Hall for their accomplishment. “Opening up for Bon Jovi at the ACC gave us the opportunity to become acquainted with Jon, where he was kind enough to share a lot of great advice about the music industry. However at that time we never imagined that our debut CD would be produced by Bon Jovi's engineer/friend/producer Obie O'Brien,” says lead singer Dom Mark KZ, who also plays piano and guitar.
It didn’t take long for promoters to notice them, and soon MAR KZ would find themselves opening a Def Leppard show at Rogers Sarnia Bay Fest 2007. Next, they were booked to open for the Eastern leg of the Scorpions’ 2007 Canadian tour with stops in Montreal, Ottawa, Quebec City, Chiqoutimi, and Shawinigan.

The bands music will take you on a journey through life, love, faith, dreams, and Rock ‘n Roll. The first single off the self-titled independently released album “It’s My Right” celebrates “life and having the courage to believe in yourself and not holding back,” says Lu Cachie who plays lead guitar.
Jode Delme holds it all together with thunderous zeal on the drums. Jode credits their success to “powerful stage presence and chemistry between the three long-time friends.” The band has been together for 7 years while Dom and Lu played together for 10 years previously and had gone to high school together.

This band's career was heavily jump-started in 2006 when they won a contest and the prize was one ticket to open for Bon Jovi at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. Some impressive award for these young up-and-comers who ceased a golden opportunity and played their hearts out to 20,000 people. Dom actually stated that it's an absolute "surreal" feeling to play in front of a live audience. Since that shining moment, MAR KZ have toured with Def Leppard & the Scorpions and now a brand new album under their belt. Sky's the limit!
It's worth mentioning that MAR KZ are once again entered to win an opening spot for the July 21, 2010 Bon Jovi show in Toronto. (http://www.bonjovi.com/ourstage) MAR KZ are listed under the Toronto, Ontario channel and are currently at #30 on the list! Bon Jovi is looking for a "SuperBAND" and MAR KZ fit the bill to the T! You can request that this band open ANY show, so show your support and spread the word!
It just so happens that Bon Jovi's long-time pal/producer/engineer, Obie O'Brien, produced & engineered Mar KZ's debut release. Also, with the first single & video off the new record "It's My Right", one can't help but notice a similar ring to that of "It's My Life" by Bon Jovi. In the end though, one thing is for certain and that is that life is just right for Dom, Lu and Jode as they prove that MAR KZ is the right life for them as a band. The Canadian-Italians have chosen wisely! Speaking in terms of words of wisdom, Dom MAR KZ had some insightful words of his own on the topic of rock star personas and that is that the whole rock star stigma is just a mere "image". He went on to say that "we're all just regular people in the end like anyone else and that we're all united as one". He finishes by stating that we should all "just have fun because you never know what tomorrow will bring". Words to live by as Dom speaks as not a rock star but as a human being who just happens to play music for a living.
Get ready for the all-acoustic set from MAR KZ that Dom referred to as being more of an "intimate" live experience for the fans.
