MAREN PARUSEL
Nominated for best pop artist and set to perform at the 2010 San Diego Music Awards, Maren Parusel is about to head into the studio to record her first full length record.
Its been a busy year for her band after completing a three week summer tour and high profile shows at SXSW, The North Park Music Thang, and Maren also released a seven inch with Single Screen Records. The German born native moved to California just five years ago and has since caught the attention of everyone from Linda Perry to The Killers.
Maren brings an unlikely combination of delicacy and edge, pairing wistful pop melodies with the darker shadings of Indie, pop, and rock with a new band that poignantly delivers her layered hooks and melodies.
From the moment Maren Parusel set foot in California her music has taken her on a whirlwind ride crossing paths with the likes of Rolan Bolan (son of Marc Bolan), The Zeros, Alejandro Escovedo, The Killers, and Linda Perry who let Maren record a new track in her Burbank studio and then caught her set that night at The Hotel Caf.
Parusels music wields a widely contrasting range of musical colors and textures to paint pictures of longing, lost love, or love newly found. And birds, flying, clouds, outer space, and other non-terrestrial lyrical subjects - she is clearly avian, trapped in a human's body.
"I love the writing process," says the 28 year old songwriter.
"The songs just happen, it's very magical. As you express yourself to the maximum, in that very moment, everything comes together. There's something very powerful about music and words joining to create total synergy."
Parusel's keen melodic sensibility comes in part from her classical piano training beginning at the age of six, which cemented a bond to such composers as Debussey and Chopin. As a teenager she picked up the guitar and later the bass, and was drawn to everything from '50s rock 'n' roll -- "I like simple rock 'n' roll, like Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly" to such diverse influences as the Beatles, John Lennon, the Supremes, David Bowie, The Pretenders, Blondie, Cheap Trick, the French singer Franoise Hardy, and songwriters like Leonard Cohen and Cat Stevens. "I like timeless songs," she says.
As far as inspiration goes, Parusel cites, "my heart, my soul, my love, the stars and the universe, the ocean, the waves, the wind, the earth, and lime popsicles and driving fast with my hand out the window.
