"The components that made “Life’s A Ball,” Mara Levi’s debut disc, so appealing are all present on her delightful sophomore effort “What Are You?” (maralevi.com). She has not abandoned her sense of playfulness nor have her songwriting and performance skills been dulled in any way..." - Chicago Free Press
"...her multifaceted personality emerges through simple, honest lyrics. It is impossible to pin the album down to one stylistic genre..." - GO NYC
"Mara Levi's second solo album...finds the Washington, DC-based singer-songwriter back for another round of folksy, waltzy, and sometimes jazzy tunes built around a base of unapologetically open lesbian themes..." - Bitch Magazine
"In addition to teaching music and participating in Girls Rock! DC, Levi found time to drop her third CD, We Listen to Fools. Oh, and it rocks." - Les Enfants Terrible

Bio
In short: Mara Levi (Mah' ruh Lee' vee) is the one-night stand Elvis Costello and Liz Phair never had—an amalgamation of bluegrass, hip hop, folk, pop, and jazz, trimmed with a faux hawk and studded with a diamond-sharp wit.
A little bit longer:
Mara Levi is a classically-trained jazz musician/choir girl who cut her teeth playing bass in an all-male (except Mara) rock band. She specializes in Smart Pop: music that is catchy and accessible, and intricate and smart. Her style is the hypothetical lovechild of Elvis Costello and Liz Phair--an amalgamation of bluegrass, hip hop, folk, pop, and jazz, studded with diamond-sharp wit. Mara's third album, “We Listen to Fools,” is a collection of heartbreaking love songs that make you want to skip and sing along. It's the kind of emotional devastation you want to invite over for movie night and Twizzlers. "We Listen to Fools" is preceded by “Life’s a Ball” (2003) and “What are You?” (2007). Mara's signature songs include the “Homo Song,” (What are You?) a cheerful coming-out tune sparked with Mara's signature smarts, and “Angelina,”(What are You?) a touching stalker ballad for the lovely Angelina Jolie.
In her spare time, Mara teaches music to elementary students and cabaret singers, and volunteers with Girls Rock! DC, a music camp focused on self-esteem and empowerment. She is a graduate of Amherst College and has been touring nationally for more than 10 years. www.maralevi.com
