Debut album from Tasmania's Luca Brasi, that features 10 rocking tunes very much in the vein of Sommerset or maybe even early Against Me and Jawbreaker. Think quirky, but catchy melodic punk rock that is instantly likeable and listenable, but yet takes a few spins before you know the singalong chorus lines. Some really intelligent songwriting on display here, mixed in with an impeccable use of back up vocals and background guitar leads to boot. Apparently this band has only been together for over a year and yet they already have a very refined and matured sound. Great record and excellent debut. Expect the vinyl release from Poison City Records real soon too. - Rest Assured Zine
It was a cold Tasmanian winter when I had my first encounter with a very young Luca Brasi around two years ago. We we’re playing an all ages show in Hobart, the time was around 2pm and half the people in attendance were skolling beers out of their shoes. When Luca Brasi actually started playing, us Victorians were blown away, this band was killing it! Good times were had by all and the following year I decided to write a review on the bands demo, which then turned, what was at the time planned to being a small reviews blog, into what you all now know as Chucking a Mosh.
Since the release of the bands demo, Luca Brasi have continued to go from strength to strength with their shows in their native land near packing out and half the crowd singing along to every song. The last year has also seen the guys head to Victoria a few times as well as making the long trip to Brisbane. The band made solid fan bases in both cities and capped it off by playing at this years Poison City Weekender. We now have the bands debut Album ‘Extended Family’.
Extended Family takes off exactly where the demo left off. The tunes are catchy and rocking, and for the fans of the demo, a couple of the tracks from that recording have snuck onto the album. This recording has retained the bands rough feel while managing to clean up the sound resulting in tight and tidy sounding record.
Leading into things with Beacons and then ripping into fan favourite, Theme Song From HQ, it fast becomes clear that the Brasi boys have stepped things up and mean business. Recorded by Tassie locals Lincoln La Fevre and Nic White, this album has been produced in a warm tone more suited to a rock recording, ut this is exactly what the band needed. The drums and bass sit well and are solid, leaving room for the crisp tone of the guitar to cut through and really drive the sound. Tyler’s vocals on the record are a highlight, and along with the use of some backups, this band is soon going to be one of the bands people a scrambling to get to the front of the stage to watch play so they can sing along to every song with their mates and try their best to avoid tinea of the throat from doing too many shoe-eys.
Luca Brasi’s song writing ability is what makes this album. The band works together to create the best sound for each song. The time they put in to arrangement and song structure definitely doesn’t go unnoticed. Given the work these guys put into their craft and the way the make friends across the country, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Extended Family is going to be right up the top of everyone’s album of the year list in a few months and the way this band is progressing, they are going to be one of the biggest bands in the country within the next few years.
Extended Family is out now though Broken Bones Records and Poison City Records. - Chucking a Mosh
