For more than five years, Lost Boy? has been quietly and steadily playing and recording his infectious brand of fast, lo-fi, punk-infused bedroom pop around New York City and offering it for free online. As the music output of 26-year-old Suffolk County, N.Y., native Davey Jones, Lost Boy? tends to reinvigorate the definition of “indie” by letting the music do the work. Currently, Jones has no set label, no publicist and no booking agent. In fact, at this point, he doesn’t even really have a permanent place of residence (he’s working on it). No matter; he's certainly begun to carve out a small following. With over 300 songs already recorded, Jones is finally started to get some recognition, playing regular shows with up-and-coming pop troupe Twin Sister and recently having his song “Fast, Burn” featured on Pitchfork’s forkcast. Here, he talks about his approach to music, the lo-fi scene in New York City, Neil Young and what the future holds for Lost Boy?. - Prefix
Lost Boy, real name Davey Jones of NYC, USA, has made an EP of songs that aren’t a million miles away in form from Gross Magic’s pastoral pastiche (real name Sam McGarrigle of Brighton, UK). But, like the name suggests, Lost Boy isn’t indulging himself in a whimsical pilgrimage through pop history, instead he’s pillaging his sounds from a junkyard once frequented by the likes of L7 and the Meat Puppets. There’s a heaviness to these songs, a kind of atonal darkness that flows under even the jangliest cuts - it really is about the USA. “Chew” and “Awhile” are the most upbeat tracks, but Lost Boy is really effective when he goes for the deep and grimy (“Revenge Song”). When Lost Boy hits his stride, USA USA plays as a series of howlers with a touch of indie angularity, like the Breeders on a very bad trip. In fact, Lost Boy is so good at regurgitating indie sludge that it makes his forays into acoustic psychedelia (“Desert Mirage”) and reverse-vocal atmospherics (“Droner”) seem sort of pointless, but the songs fit the EP thematically and it’s all fair game, anyway. Lost Boy’s breathy, high-pitched voice is sure to divide listeners. Some will like it fine and some will find it affected, which is probably the point.
USA USA is available in tape format from Old Flame Records. Only 100 copies were made and they’re going fast, so buy it now. Stream the track “USA” below. - GET BENT
Don't be fooled by the first, four seconds of the new Lost Boy? track "USA." I am pretty sure that brief snippet of acoustic guitar is there simply to fuck with you before heavy, crunching guitars come cascading into your speakers.
The rest of the song continues along like past Lost Boy? outputs with its hazy, stoned-out punk, distorted vocals and dry, sardonic lyrics detailing America's favorite pastime: drinking beer. Off his forthcoming EP with the same name, this is a good sign that Lost Boy has stayed the course with what he is good at.
We featured Lost Boy? a year ago as a "Prefix Artist to Watch." Since then, Lost Boy? has stayed relatively quiet, playing gigs here and there and releasing a couple of 7-inches so obviously we are excited to see new music from the Brooklyn-based artist. The new EP is out on cassette and limited to 100 copies. - Prefix
Rising NYC indie-pop outfit Twin Sister just posted this frantic jam from NYC songwriter Davey Jones, who records under the moniker Lost Boy, over at Altered Zones. Twin Sister speculate that Jones might have "taken some bad acid recently", but we think he just sounds like he's had a lot of coffee (not a bad thing). (via Altered Zones) - Pitchfork
Last year, Twin Sister pointed us in the direction of "Fast Burn", a high-energy song by Davey Jones, aka Lost Boy. Here's "Chew", a track that's less frenzied but just as grungy, off his new cassette-tape EP, USA USA. - Pitchfork
