"I have a confession for the masses. Lizzy Grant [Myspace] is one of my new favorite artists. Her stunning performance during CMJ inspired me (Shawn and Tom, too!) to attend her show on Tuesday night at the National Underground in New York City. And the setting was quite fitting – a dank, brick-exposed cellar with dozens of sweaty fans eager to absorb her old-fashioned cool.
Armed with a distinct voice to melt and enough reverb to drown, the sultry chanteuse charmingly ambled through an abbreviated set of infectious original compositions. Through cheek-creasing grins, she pleased with songs like “Trash Magic,” “Jump,” and “Yayo.” However, it was “Mermaid Hotel” with its teasing lyrical couplet, “Will you salute me Miss America, cos I am,” which elicited the most frequent crowd outbursts. Once the music ended, the audience still craved more and demanded an encore; Grant obliged with “Gramma (Blue Ribbon Sparkler Trailer Heaven),” her strongest tune and likely single.

"I'm waiting at Alice's Tea Cup, a café on the Upper East Side, when Lizzy Grant saunters up. She's wearing skintight black pants, a vintage floral blouse and a red letterman’s jacket. Her bright blonde hair is piled on top of her head and her eyes are rimmed with sooty eyeliner. If we were in a movie, her entrance would be scored with a vamp, the bass line revving to announce the arrival of an enchanting young ingénue.
But since we're not in a film, she's scored her own entrance with her CD Kill Kill. Produced by David Kahne (Regina Spektor, Sublime, Paul McCartney), the music is lush and cinematic, with strings, Wurlitzers, and electric guitars, recalling 50s-era Americana both sonically and thematically. Lizzy Grant is one of the most unusual and interesting young artists emerging from the NYC scene. Disregarding genre, she mixes elements of pop and avant-garde, complex jazz chords with unexpected electronic flourishes, and narcotic blues with chilling lyrics that sharply contrast with the warm sound of her voice.
A mesmerizing performer, it's no surprise that Lizzy Grant is one of the most sought after and intriguing artists in the New York music scene these days. She showed up with her guitar and blew the judges away at a songwriting contest, got invited onto some impressive shows with notable headliners including The Blow, Mirah and Moby, posted some homemade music videos online and before long, had assembled a following that included everyone from teens on MySpace to major music industry heavyweights.
