"EP Review: Little Two Eyes – All the Things I Never Told You & Why"

Hooray for fundraising drives! "All the Things…" is the quietly accomplished first release from Little Two Eyes, funded with the generosity of lots of local support.

The EP showcases the maturing voice of Emily Smart, which has enormous potential. Smart's voice is the backbone of Little Two Eyes, and the EP gives it ample room to experiment, explore and ultimately shine. The tracks blend Smart's voice with grungy '90s sounds and a twist of electro-synth pop. It’s an intriguing mix of sounds which works well now, and also leaves lots of possibilities for further development. This is a sound that could go in multiple directions, and that’s something exciting to look forward to.

'The Cycle' is the opening track and it immediately draws the listener in. It's hip, casual and upbeat, leading to a powerful conclusion. 'The One Who Loves To Dream' is whimsical and one of several multiple-play tracks on the EP. This one could be a hit! 'Picasso' begins with rock sounding guitars as the backing to the vocals. It introduces the slightly harder edge to this band and is nicely positioned next to the first two tracks.

'Cut Me So Deep' has the lyrical feel of a ballad but maintains its energy through changes in tempo. Think Evanescence. 'Silence' has some interesting guitar work to begin and strong harmony between Emily Smart and Isabella Fyfe in the first verse. This track allows Smart to give listeners a glimpse of her vocal strength and range. 'All the White Horses' is a recent national radio hit, clearly because it’s just a little bit catchy. Hamish Cox's keyboard work on this track is memorable.

The cover artwork by Kasia Tons is visually interesting too; a good choice of simple imagery on unusual, eye-catching lavender.

Overall the EP is pleasantly listenable and lends itself to the repeat button. It is tightly structured and satisfyingly coherent, courtesy of Miami-based producer Kramer working with local producer Jarrad Payne. Expect a lot from this group of five.

"Album: EP Review: Little Two Eyes – All the Things I Never Told You & Why"

It’s a rarity for a record to able to transport you back to another time and place, but that’s exactly what Little Two Eyes’ debut EP manages to do. A whirlwind of moody melodies combined with delicate vocals, this premier release is bringing the soul of 1990’s shoegaze music back to life. So break out your ripped jeans and flannelette shirts, Little Two Eyes are reinventing the 90’s with All the Things I Never Told You & Why.

With a little help from local producer Jarrad Payne and Miami based producer Kramer, this Adelaidian quintet (Emily Smart – vocals, Isabella Fyfe – cello & backing vocals, Hamish Cox – synth & piano, Matt Nikic – bass, Alex Bishop – drums) have managed to create a collection of six songs that work harmoniously together. From explosive grungy tracks to more pensive, brooding tunes, the EP presents a beautiful synergy between songs. Listeners are taken on a resonant journey, exploring the collected and discarded memories of the past through an alternative pop sound.

Featuring deep, brooding arrangements and droning, distorted guitar riffs, the rough music is a perfect contrast to the almost angelic vocals of Smart. Whilst the music is reminiscent of the shoegazer musical movement of the early 1990’s, the inclusion of dreamy piano and cello notes gives the music a unique edge.

The first single from the EP, All The White Horses, which was released in October 2010, is certainly the standout track for the debut. Beginning with a haunting piano melody that trickles slowly into an explosive arrangement, the song builds to a harrowing peak during the chorus, which is heightened by the powerful lyrics.

The latest single from the release, The Cycle, is also another impressive track. Featuring wavering synth notes, the song steadily evolves into a lamenting anthem, building in both energy and pace. Smart’s vocals are the hero of this song, but do not over power the music, working perfectly with the ominous guitar and bass lines.

The remaining songs on the EP are just as perfectly crafted as the two lead singles, evoking feelings and memories of lost love and time past. However, the variety and diversity of the songs are limited, with the majority of them sounding particularly similar. Despite this, the release is an amazing first step for this blossoming new Aussie band. - www.lowtonemedia.com

"MusicSA Monthly Feature Artist: Little Two Eyes"

Bursting onto the Adelaide music scene in early 2011, Little Two Eyes are an angelic alternative pop band; brutally delicate and mood driven arrangements juxtaposed against fragile and explosive moments, and a gritty live energy that lingers with you long after you've left the venue.

Little Two Eyes and Miami based producer Kramer have created an exciting debut record "All the things I never told you and why" with a unique sound that echoes the early nineties shoe-gazer movement.

Kramer began producing after years on the downtown NYC scene playing in such bands as Ween and the Butthole Surfers, and his work on "Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon" by Urge Overkill for Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction soundtrack earned him the Producer of the Year [1995] award in Rolling Stone magazine.

A soft whisper and a raging soul, Emily Smart’s vocals and guitar are complimented by the ominous tones of her cousin Isabella Fyfe’s Cello and backing vocals. Hamish Cox provides the dark synths and piano textures which soar over the volatile rhythm section of Matt Nikic on bass, and new kid on the block, Alex Bishop on drums.

Little Two Eyes: "All the things I never told you and why" reflects on life’s little souvenirs; the phases, dreams, emotions, and people we collect or discard as we pass through, and is delivered with a “shoe-gazer” alternative pop sound.

In the lead up to their EP Launch on March 3rd at The Grand Academy of Lagado (the west end’s newest Adelaide Fringe destination), Little Two Eyes will also be supporting Owl Eyes (VIC) on February 20th at Adelaide Unibar.

EP Launch
Date: 3rd March 2012

"Escape with Emily Smart"

"Emily Smart isn’t as well known as Missy Higgins or Fiona Apple but on the evidence of her debut EP The Escape Plan she will be. A talented songwriter with a social conscience, Smart writes with attitude, with a certain edge, with her heart on her sleeve and her voice is authentic. Hers is a golden voice that deserves to be heard.

Her eventual success will be based on nothing more and nothing less than sheer musical talent.

All six tracks on The Escape Plan are relaxed but steeped in emotion. Smart builds her songs around smooth acoustic guitar, a voice that’s built for intimacy and straightforward tunes. It may sound simple, but it’s not. Cleverly steering clear of histrionics and synthetics, Smart modestly delivers a mature, deftly fashioned, collection of compositions. She plays bass, mandolin and keyboards with the same assurance as her chosen instrument, and uses Isabella Fyfe on cello and Shaun Doddy and Sean Kemp on drums to add additional flavour.

Romantically melancholy, pure and honest, Smart’s songs hauntingly flow in and out of light and shade, and pieces like Italy are as richly warm as a hot Tuscan evening and enrich the soul.

As emotionally volatile and as inherently fragile as a love letter, The Escape Plan is an engaging debut from a beautiful, original and compelling new talent who has the world at her feet. In a perfect world this EP would go straight to the top of the charts and stay there for months." - Independent Weekly

"The Escape Plan Review"

"What is The Escape Plan I hear you ask? Trust in Emily Smart - she has the answer. While everyone seems in a hurry, driven by time, lacking patience and so forth, Emily will take you on a musical journey that challenges you to slow down, take a deep breath and live every moment with the sheer enthusiasm of being alive.

Known in SA as part of the female-fronted gutsy rock trio Illicit Eve, Emily's solo debut takes a more laid-back (though still spirited) approach, and shows off her many talents as a musician and composer. On The Escape Plan, Emily has written, arranged and produced this EP, and plays every instrument on it except two.

While listening to the 6 well-rounded tracks of the EP, close your eyes and be prepared to drown in her emotive voice. It's as if she has pictured an array of colours and set them to music - these are songs with a message, yet delicate as a flower in spring.

The Escape Plan contains exquisitely written poetry that is simply a joyful experience to listen to. I’m thankful I’m South Australian and get to listen and experience the great talent that is Emily Smart." - Michael Mann

- Spoz’s Rant

Powerful Dynamism. Dream-pop. Shoe-gaze.

Little Two Eyes are a fragile and explosive alternative pop band dripping with synth goodness. Combining mood driven arrangements with angelic vocals, droning guitars and a gritty live energy, Little Two Eyes have a presence that lingers with you long after you've left the venue.

The Adelaidian quintet is fronted by the soft whisper and raging soul of Emily Smart (Illicit Eve / Emily Smart & The Clever Girls / Southie) on vocals and guitar, and complimented by the bambi tones of her cousin Isabella Fyfe’s backing vocals, the lush synths/piano textures of Hamish Cox, and the volatile rhythm section of Matty Nikic on bass and Alex Bishop on drums.

Their debut single 'All The White Horses' (2010), recorded and produced by Jarrad Payne, was featured on national and community radio and television stations around Australia including Triple J, ABC, Nova & Rage. Thanks to a recording grant from Arts SA, Little Two Eyes spent the last few months of 2011 in the studio crafting their debut EP, mixing their tracks in Miami with shoe-gazer pioneer producer KRAMER. In early 2012, the band released their debut EP ‘All The Things I Never Told You & Why’ (2012) receiving airplay around the country and nabbing supports with Owl Eyes (VIC) and Cub Scouts (QLD), and a successful tour to Melbourne in July.

Having recently signed with JL Music Publishing, Little Two Eyes will top off a great year for the band by unleashing their latest single Rain Music, with plans in motion for an east coast tour in early 2013.
