NEW YORK — Lisa Bianco describes herself as a “pop singer/songwriter with a punk heart.â€? Bianco, who was raised in Long Island and currently lives in Queens, said the diverse New York music scene she grew up with had a huge impact on her songwriting.

Indeed, Bianco's songs seamlessly fuse aspects of influences that run the gamut from Fugazi to The Bangles.

This will be the second CMJ Week appearance for Bianco, who regularly tours around the tri-state area, alternating between full-band and acoustic solo performances.

“I really learned a lot from the whole thing last year,� she said. “You meet people at other gigs and talk about music and the state of the industry. … New York becomes even smaller at this event.�

I’ve watched this next “Shoreworld” artist grow in leaps and bounds since her last record. Lisa Bianco has become an excellent songwriter with a smooth addictive voice along the lines of Liz Phair and Brenda Carlyle while playing some very tasty guitar along the way. One of the more outstanding guitar players in her genre, Lisa shows keen sensibilities with rhythm and lead lines, melodic by nature and wily enough to understand that you play for the good of the song, not the player.

Produced by Bryan Russell, the disc works smoothly as his understanding of Bianco’s
music is very apparent, dropping Lisa’s vocals and sizzling guitar work right on
top of tight bass and thick drums courtesy of David Leathergood and Dan Duggins.

This is one of those rare times that I love the whole record. I just enjoy everything she’s
doing with Post Data. Some of my favorite tracks were the crunchy goodness of “Something To Prove,” featuring hip choruses and guitar lines ala Elliot Easton
(The Cars), easily one of the songs I would consider to be very radio friendly, it also
showcases Bianco’s much improved vocal strengths in fine fashion.

The atmospheric pull of “Falling Leaves” brings back images of early Heart with
its acoustic intro and when it pulls into the proverbial station, Bianco amazes with
her twists and compositional turns, winding out some highly inventive verses and
contagious choruses. And of course the title track, “Post Data,” says it all as Lisa
sets up the chorus with a great bridge in the vein of Blondie before turning loose
on the money shot chorus of this fine tune. Lisa Bianco is a unique musical fighter
that’s learned her trade and emerged on the winning side with a great disc full of

Whether it is through social networking sites like Facebook or a quick text via cellphone, people are increasingly communicating through electronic messaging rather than face-to-face.
For one Astoria alternative folk-rocker, the advent of a new world order of “e-relationships” doesn’t have to be a bad thing — and can even be the impetus for groundbreaking music.
In her debut album as a solo performer, Post Data, Lisa Bianco is trying to find a personal connection through technology that isn’t cold, clinical or calculated.
“Post Data is where the relationship of humans and data is evolving and we have an emotional attachment to it,” Bianco explained. “Now we resort to computers to e-mail and text to maintain relationships with each other. Yeah, it’s keeping in touch, but where is the real face time and interaction, which is what makes us human, real and alive?”
With veteran producer Bryan Russell (Envy on the Coast, Straylight Run) at the helm, themes of post-modern alienation weave their way in and out of Bianco’s songs, which are mostly about her relationships with herself and other people.
In “Already Gone,” she sings, “I regret what I never said.” But the backbone of the album — and its finale — is the track “Post Data/We Communicate,” which Bianco considers “a summation of how we function as people.”
Self-released on her own label, Random Noise Records, the record release party for Post Data will be on March 6 at Arlene’s Grocery in Manhattan’s Lower East Side.
Originally from New Hyde Park, L.I., music came naturally to Bianco, though after high school she went on to the University of Hartford to study occupational therapy. It was there that she learned to play guitar. “I was shy,” she said. “It was a play guitar in my room kind of thing.”
After college her confidence grew when she moved back to New York, settling in Queens about six years ago to hit the local open-mic circuit. “I knew I had to get out there,” she said. “As a songwriter, you want people to hear your songs and you believe you have a message to convey.”
Eventually, she put together a band, called Red Jacket, featuring a revolving door of musicians who joined her in releasing two EPs before breaking up two years ago, paving the way for her career as a solo artist.
Bianco’s influences are varied — from alternative rock mainstays like Radiohead to post-punk pioneers like The Bangles and The Go-Gos, the legendary Blondie, and even country music acts like the Dixie Chicks and Lucinda Williams.
These influences merge as Bianco shows off her unique style which includes her impressive guitar chops and infectious, hard driving melodies.
Bianco, backed by a full band, will take the stage at 8 p.m. at Arlene’s Grocery, 95 Stanton St. in Manhattan.

Lisa Bianco is not only a strong vocalist, but she’s an awesome lead guitarist as well. Bianco is a multi-talented writer in the vein of Pat Benatar and Lucinda Williams, just to name a poignant few. Her playing style reminds me of The Breeders’ Kim Deal “Tuff As Nails” sound mixed with The Godfather’s shimmer of Kris Dollimore riffage. The Saint crowd totally got into this New York style group of CBGB’s-meets-The Bitter End gang, right down to the attitude laden solo’s that Bianco spit out like so much Lincoln Tunnel gravel. Her set at The Saint was raw and determined, climbing above some bar chattering idiots and winning over the room. Bianco threw in songs such as “Sideways,” a melodic ballad that has all the makings of a VH1 classic, featuring glassy pianos, superb melodies and grungy Bianco lead lines. We also got another sneak peak at the new record with “We Communicate,” a slowly building, thoughtful composition ala Benatar, slick, well played pop rock with a well produced monster feel. Bianco’s signature song was up last and is entitled “Sun Glare,” a tune that she made popular with her last group. It’s easy to see why people standing next to me were actually calling for it as it chugs out into its beginning, shooting Bianco’s bell clear voice out front, as she leans her hip into that telecaster for the chorus. Her solo stands up to any rocker I know, bluesy and full of dirt, she tore the guts from the song, leaving her guitar screaming on stage. The band is comprised of Lisa on vocals and guitars, as well as David Leatherwood on bass, Dan Duggins on drums and Gerry Perlinski on guitar. Lisa can be reached over at lisabianco.net.
