Laura Ovcjak was born in Toronto, Ontario, on May 17th, 1985. She began playing the piano and soon after created melodies to a series of words she linked rhythmically on the fly. Her natural musicality also shone through in her dancing, which she continues to do professionally today, throughout Canada and the United States.
After concentrated high school study in the maths and sciences, Laura decided to defer early acceptance to the University of Toronto's Forensic Science Program to pursue career and training opportunities in dance in New York City. In 2007, shortly after picking up the guitar and writing, Laura graduated from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy's Studio Acting Program where she met some key figures who helped direct her down her destined songwriting path. Jamming with guitarist Dave Weil in '07, they formed their New York based band, Something West. Now back in Toronto, Laura performs solo and with her brother, dad and grandfather as a backing band. She's taking the Partridge Family to new levels!
Her musical influences are many, but primarily Melissa Etheridge, Sam Roberts, The Foo Fighters, Radiohead, Fleetwood Mac, Tori Amos and of course, The Beatles.
