Ever wonder what it's really like to balance a day job with being in a band? Or are you caught in a fine-tuned balancing act yourself? Either way, here's a dose of real talk from Laura O'Neill and Greg Yagolnitzer of the indie pop band Laura and Greg, and Danielle Ponder of the soul group Danielle Ponder and the Tomorrow People.
By day, New York City-based O'Neill is the co-founder of Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream and the co-owner of Selamat Pagi, an Indonesian restaurant in Brooklyn, while Yagolnitzer is a visual artist who recently co-directed a Weezer music video. Ponder, who's based in Rochester, New York, is a time-strapped public defender for Monroe County. In this podcast episode, the performers get together to discuss how they keep their day jobs and side hustles in perfect harmony. - The Guardian US
When it comes to music festivals and conferences, we often get tour diaries happening with bands. On this occasion, we thought it would be fun to see New York’s CMJ from the perspective of Brooklyn locals Laura and Greg! GIG ALERT
Last weekend was the huge musical hullaballoo known as Governor’s Ball, featuring many of the hottest acts touring this summer. Coming right on the heels of the Ball is Brooklyn’s Northside Festival, which celebrates up and coming artists and the borough’s artier corners. You’ll hear some big names, sure, but give yourself the chance to experiment with some new sounds. Here’s the indie pop duo Laura and Greg, with “Forever for Sure”

When it comes to music festivals and conferences, we often get tour diaries happening with bands. On this occasion, we thought it would be fun to see New York’s CMJ from the perspective of Brooklyn locals Laura and Greg! Our first show of the week was a dinner party hosted by Taittinger Champagne and curated by Cherry Bombe Magazine, at an apartment in Tribeca.
Quickly after our set we headed over to our showcase at Pete’s Candy Store in Greenpount Brooklyn. Pete’s is a neighborhood staple and a super cool little train-car room.
We caught a bunch of great shows throughout the week and got to play with sone awesome bands too. Some highlights included// Diet Cig, Salt Cathedral (above), The Dirty Nil (below), Ezra Furman and The Boyfriends, Titas Andronicas (second below), Oh Pep and New Myths.
Next up was the Sounds Australia/Cyber PR annual wrap party that took place in a Brooklyn Brownstone (photo above). It was a super chill and fun show to play and being a half Aussie band, we were excited to get on board.
Our last show of the week was down at Fulton Stall Market with Paper Garden Records and Little Water Radio. The entire showcase was broadcasted live and should be online soon at http://littlewaterradio.com
We made special drop cards for CMJ with free downloads for a new demo, a couple of tracks from our LP Forever For Sure and a live track we recorded at Daytrotter earlier this year. - AU Review
Seriously, just buy this record.
Everybody says that you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover and everybody knows that stereotypes are bullshit and dismissive but everybody still has the nasty tendency to rely on previous experience and social conditioning when sizing up and evaluating something new. The Onion said it best, with a healthy dab of snark: “Stereotypes Are A Real Time-Saver.”
How, you may ask, does personal prejudice play into this record review? On first look, there is a lot to this record that telegraphs twee, self-important and ultimately insufferable hipster pop. Girl and guy-with-guitar duo? Check. Hand-drawn mono-color cover? Check. Promotional photo on their Bandcamp profile showing the duo sharing iPhone earbuds on a New York subway train while, one assumes, they’re riding through Brooklyn? Check, check, check, check, CHECK. On first glance, this album looks like something that is targeted at and made for the moustache styling, wax using, gentleness-as-artifice, shoe-gazing set.
The first 30 seconds of the opening track do nothing to dispel that assumption; simple arpeggiated guitar and female vocals open up with lyrics about emotions, predictions and feeling out of place. With the previously mentioned preconceived notions held firmly in hand, the listener gets a momentary sinking feeling in the pit of one’s stomach – all signs point toward this being the audio equivalent of Greta Gerwig’s character in Frances Ha, with the next thirty-odd minutes barely tolerable at best.
But then something wonderful happens. A second voice joins, hitting tight Simon and Garfunkel harmonies which are shortly followed by subtle, Chelsea Girl-esque strings. The song isn’t what changes, mind you, rather it is the listener’s perception. This isn’t trust-fund twee self-indulgence; this is wonderfully delicate, highly considered, almost-chamber indie pop. Throughout, there are traces of Nico and hints of Dylan but with enough modern touches to make the sound fresh, rather than retro-rehash. Laura & Greg manage to tread that delicate line of honest self-reflection that sits between wide-eyed ingenue hope and broken-hearted worldly exhaustion. There are also little snippets of the organic scattered throughout, an audible count-off here, a slightly out-of-time drum hit there, making it feel really real.
It’s exceedingly hard to pick top tracks from a record like this. “Don’t Let Me,” the album’s shortest cut, is a concentrated nugget of wonderful that features a polyrhythmic ride of intertwining guitar and percussion. “Once Out Loud” has a racing, cut time feel with a lead line that evokes early Jackson Browne. “Undertow” has the instant country flair a lap-steel gives and is a case study in how you don’t have to play loud or fast in order to convey emotional intensity.
Occasionally, even the most jaded listener can find a record that blasts through their calcified personal biases. This is one of those records. Do yourself a favor: pick up this record, put on some headphones, and lie on your living room floor, eyes closed, and listen through this album without any distraction or interruption. You’ll be a better person for it. - MXDWN
Music Vid Premiere: ‘Forever For Sure’ from Brooklyn Indie Pop Duo Laura & Greg
See boy-girl indie pop due from Brooklyn. Yes, you may be thinking, yes, I’ve been here before. But Laura & Greg, despite what might seem like a dry-as-bones band name, make some really fresh tunes. And their new album, Forever For Sure has arrived just in time for the sweltering summer, a time when sweet, minimal jangles that float light as a feather are not only in order, but a necessary respite from the darkness we’ve been treating our ears to the rest of the year. Sweet as they may be, the pair definitely, thankfully doesn’t qualify as twee. Rather, they’ve got serious style, thanks to Greg’s visual art background, and it’s as apparent as ever in their new music video for the album’s title track which, don’t forget, you’re seeing here first.
Laura & Greg is Greg Yagolnitzer and Laura O’Neill, the latter of whom you might recognize from the Brooklyn restaurant scene. As both co-founder of Van Leeuwen Ice Cream (truck business-turned bi-coastal empire of delicious frozen sweet slangers) and co-owner of Selamat Pagi (a Greenpoint restaurant serving up Balinese-inspired cuisine), Laura stays pretty busy as a business owner who’s found a relatively new passion in music. Greg is no less multi-talented as an animator and visual artist. He put his skills to use in creating the rotoscope animation that appears in Laura & Greg’s first video, “Muscle Memory.”
B+B spoke with the duo over the phone to get more deets on their indie pop act and what’s happening in the wash of black-and-white weirdness that is the video for “Forever For Sure.”
How did the two of you meet?
Laura: We actually met at a bar, Manhattan Inn. I’ve never done anything properly with music, but Greg has been in a bunch of bands, so when we met we got to talking and Greg was looking for a new music project and it was just kind of this throw-away thing, like we should have a band.
BB_Q(1) Was the band always a two-piece indie pop thing? Or did you experiment with anything else?
Laura: Yeah, we sometimes play as a four piece, but we always keep it so that we can play just the two of us and if we want to beef it up, we can do a four piece as well.
Greg: We kept the recording of the album relatively minimal just so that between the two of us we could recreate the sound pretty close to what’s on the album. But it’s always kind of nice to have our two friends play with us once in a while to make it a little bigger.
Laura: We adopted the genre of indie pop because it’s so broad and we can still experiment with lots of different genres. I think also, a lot of people will be like, “Oh, it’s a guy and a girl, so it’s folk.” There are elements of folk for sure, but it’s not straight up folk. Indie pop kind of keeps it broader for us. Greg’s background is more punk rock than anything.
Greg: Yeah, I played in a bunch of indie rock and punk bands right up until we started this one. I do love that kind of music, but it was mostly because of the people I was friends with. It was kind of just what was around. With this project, I think songwriting in general is the main focus rather than gearing it towards a genre. So keeping it minimal and keeping it low works with Laura and myself.
BB_Q(1) Greg, you’re a filmmaker right?
Greg: I do a lot of different stuff. I make music videos and have worked on TV animation shows as a background designer and background painter. I went to school for animation and so drawing and visual arts has always been my main focus. And it’s been super helpful with our band as well. Just in terms of having more control over how everything looks. Even down to posters for shows and all the way up to the music videos.
BB_Q(1) What was your involvement in the making of the “Forever For Sure” music video?
Greg: I directed it with our friend Brendan Walter, who also produced and recorded the album for us, he’s a filmmaker and makes music videos as well. I’ve done a lot of stuff with him, just outside of the band. And Laura and I really wanted to make another video after getting really good response from our first one for “Muscle Memory.”
The whole concept for the video was to do as much of the visual effects in-camera, which means it was actually done live, and almost none of it was edited with like After Effects kind of stuff. So the inspiration was to make it look a little bit different than most stuff that’s coming out right now, especially with the whole lo-fi look. I feel like everything is just shot beautifully and in slow motion with these nice cameras and yeah, it ends up looking incredible. But it was kind of nice to break away from that a little bit.
Laura: We had a lot of help from friends. Most of the trickery is achieved from our friends wearing these black, full body suits. So whatever you see moving is being moved by them. The video actually features a lot of our friends but you just can’t see them at all.
BB_Q(1) Greg you mentioned your other bands weren’t really like this one at all, so what are some other musicians or bands that maybe had an influence on this project?
Greg: I think we both appreciate super close harmonies and guy-and-girl stuff. And we really lucked out with our voices sounding so good together. Not so much sound, but the song writing stems from 60’s British Invasion pop rock thing, which is a really different style of songwriting that I’ve been interested in since I started playing music. You can’t always use that style in a harder band or something, but it works really well with this.
Laura: Also, Greg was born in Moldova and he came here when he was 4. His parents didn’t necessarily expose him to a lot of music culture that I had access to growing up in Australia. Greg didn’t really start listening to, like, The Beatles until he was 18, which is when he just discovered this huge catalogue of music and began to appreciate it. I think that had a lot of influence on his song writing.
Greg: Yeah for sure, it’s all a lot fresher for me than it is for my friends who play music and have known about all that stuff for so long and are maybe kind of tired of it.
Laura: Most of the stuff we listen to at the moment is all really old stuff. We’ve been listening to the older Bee Gees a lot. But of course we like new music as well and try to catch a lot of shows.
BB_Q(1) What’s your involvement in the Brooklyn indie rock scene?
Greg: We do go to a bunch of shows, but I don’t know if we’re totally part of a scene.
Laura: I’d say we’re definitely not part of a scene.
Greg: Yeah, we don’t really know that many bands personally. I think we end up at some pretty cool shows every now and then.
Laura: One of the places we started out was the Brooklyn Rod & Gun, which is no longer. We’re always looking for smaller venues we can play at more regularly as well as do a little bit of touring outside of New York. We played SXSW, and Nashville on the way there, and New Orleans on the way back. We’ve put together some shows as well.
BB_Q(1) What was the recording process like for “Forever For Sure”?
Greg: Brendan Walter is a friend of ours and he recorded it for us. He used to play in this band called Valencia and they were a pretty big band, they toured for a while so he’s done a lot of recording too and he has his own set up at home. We did half of the album there, and he also works at a management company with a recording studio.
So we got in there after hours when no one was there and did the other half of the album on legit equipment that, like, real professional bands use. So it was this cool mix of a professional studio and a home studio. I feel like Brendan’s input really helped form the sound because before it was just Laura and myself on acoustic guitar.
Laura: In terms of the arrangements, we had four songs and then just started recording and realized we might have something here. And then we wrote more songs and it just ended up being a full-length album.
Now we’re doing a couple of tracks with Rubber Tracks, the Converse studio. We’re kind of being forced to think a little more clearly about how we want to record because it’s obviously a very limited time period. Whereas with this, we just had all the time in the world, which was really nice.
BB_Q(1) Laura you came to music a little bit later in life, so what inspired you to pick it up?
Laura: I’d always sung and played a little bit of guitar, but I was never as good at guitar as I was at singing, I suppose. So I never really was gonna go out and support myself with it. But when I met Greg it all just came together and it was kind of like a perfect storm I suppose. It was definitely unexpected that I’d be embarking on a music career on top of all the other things that I do. But I guess it’s always been a life-long dream, something I hoped could become a thing. And it wasn’t looking like it was going to, and now it is, and that’s awesome.
Catch Laura & Greg at Rough Trade, 8 pm on Friday May 29th, when they perform at their record release show. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door. - Bedford + Bowery (New York Magazine)
The show was hosted in a beautiful apartment in Manhattan's Battery City by the west river, with gorgeous view of New Jersey. NYC's folk duo Laura & Greg - pictured above minutes before their performance - opened the show with their delicate and intimate songs, featuring a simple acoustic guitar and two way harmonies that took us back to the glorious days of Simon & Garfunkel. The band released a full length album entitled 'Forever For Sure' - you can stream the title track below. - The Deli Magazine
There’s something so strange and charming about this video we just had to give it a shout-out. It’s like watching two ghosts in a machine stay connected to each other, two little digital silhouettes finding their way through the dark. - WIRED Magazine
I’ll be honest, I picked this album to review for Subba-Cultcha cos I’m old now and I needed something a little bit gentle after a four day birthday bank holiday bender. And they’re called Laura & Greg which sounds promisingly soothing. Album opener ‘Muscle Memory’ reassures me that I’ve chosen well here. A very pretty and delicate little melody gradually builds to a rousing vocal and reminds me that ‘These moments are young / you’ll forget each one so fast’. God I feel old.
After that the album takes off into sweet Sunday afternoon in the park vibes. Laura & Greg have voices that fit together like the stone inside a firm avocado, smooth and polished without overdoing it on the mushiness. Even when singing lines like ‘Just outside my window, is a world for two’. Their global musical backgrounds (Laura/Australian & Greg/born in Moldova but grew up in Philadelphia) meld into a beautiful cosmopolitan and cosmic sound, managing to sound old and young simultaneously. A bit like me then.
By the time we get to the title track ‘Forever for sure’ (about halfway through the album) I’m feeling so at peace with it all, it’s a similar kind of magic to drinking a cocktail of love while floating around in a geothermal hot spring surrounded by fairy dust. And just like the best love cocktails, this album keeps on giving.
A little bit Bon Iver, a little bit First Aid Kit, even actually a teeny bit Neil Diamond (I didn’t say that, I’m not old!). Stand out tracks for me, (as well as the title track which is just beautiful) are ‘Don’t let me’ – great vocals on this, and ‘Once out loud’ which has lovely little melancholic tonal twists and unexpected chord changes.
This whole album works so well and it’s already starting to sound like a delightful long lost cousin from faraway who comes to stay bringing a bottle of liquorice Sambuca and some caramel chocolate. Hopefully Laura & Greg will make some UK dates very soon! - Subba-Cultcha
This week on ‘Inconvenient Interviews‘ I help the amazingly talented indie pop band ‘Laura and Greg’ load up their car for SxSW. Watch as we work ourselves to the bone packing almost everything, but the gum ball machine, and still find time for singing some Disney songs, answering questions, and even accordion playing!
You can catch Laura & Greg at SxSW playing at La Luna House on the 20th, and on March 21st at Dive Bar. But before you do, be sure to watch their latest music video below, animated and illustrated by Greg himself. And if you find yourself hooked (believe me, you will be) you can purchase their new album Forever for Sure dropping May 12th. - Hello Giggles

Today we’re featuring another song by Laura and Greg that we are absolutely in love with called “Forever For Sure” (directed by Brendan Walter and Greg Yagolnitzer). You may remember the duo from “Muscle Memory”, another gorgeous video we shared with you back in March, as well as an Inconvenient Interview they did with Risa for SxSW. Both songs live on the band’s recently released debut album, Forever For Sure, now available on Spotify, iTunes, SoundCloud, and www.lauragreg.bandcamp.com. - Hello Giggles
Laura O’Neill and Greg Yagolnitzer make incredibly catchy, sweetly expanding harmonies constructed with guitar & voice. The New York-based duo, who go by Laura & Greg, have shared the first single, “Muscle Memory” from their forthcoming debut album, Forever For Sure.
The band will self-release their first album, Forever for Sure, on May 12, 2015. The disc was recorded by mutual friend, Brendan Walter (Valencia), in his home studio. The resulting eleven songs have moments of country, folk, Swedish indie pop, ’60s girl groups, and garage rock but the prevailing feeling is one of intimacy. - Stereo Subversion
The acoustic guy/girl duo is an old, old form, but the beauty of intertwined vocals almost ensures that it will never fall out of use. Laura and Greg‘s Forever For Sure lives happily and easily inside the bounds of that genre, delivering chipper, charming indie-pop songs. The easiest comparison is the Weepies, with whom they share a predilection for precise, staccato rhythms and stark framing of individual melodic elements. But where The Weepies are titularly mopey, L&G are more sprightly in tempo and mood.
While opener “Muscle Memory” and the title track make use of wistful guitar and fragile voice, tracks like the handclap-laden “Pennies” and the woozy ’50s charm of “Fireflies” evoke the enthusiasm of Mates of State. “Undertow (water waves)” is a strummy tune that draws off some country vibes, even. But it’s in their intimate moments that they shine brightest: “Same World” is a joy to behold, with their two beautiful voices blending and swirling over a meticulously picked guitar. Muscle Memory is fresh, vital, and warm, the sort of work that makes you forget about the difficulties and injustices of life for a while. Who doesn’t want that? - Independent Clauses
- Tracker Magazine (Portugal)
Introducing an indie pop duo from Brooklyn called Laura & Greg, who play together under the name of er… Laura & Greg, thus proving sometimes it really is best to keep things simple.
The duo are currently in the middle of recording their début full length album, in the meantime, they have been kind enough to share a couple of the finished tracks with us and the world via Bandcamp. Continuing with the theme of say what you see, the collection of four tracks are titled ‘songs’ – obviously. Consider this a preview.
This feature is about those moments when we discover a new track that makes us hit the repeat button, it’s a feeling of genuine excitement and we want the world to know about our discovery.
That’s exactly the feeling we experienced listening to Forever For Sure by Laura & Greg. We were transported to lazy summer evenings in front of the TV watching feel good movies. How about Juno or Little Miss Sunshine? This is the bonus track you’d expect to hear if you watched to the end as the credits roll.
Their voices blend harmoniously over a repetitive, yet intricate picked guitar loop, it’s simple and effective, at times reminiscent of The Magic Numbers, with a hint of Mamas & Papas. This is sunshine music, bringing a warm glow to the heart and the soul. More ‘songs’ please Laura & Greg.
Listen out for Laura & Greg, Forever For Sure on tomorrow’s Lost On Radio podcast.

Hearing about Greenpoint’s Laura O’Neill most likely conjures up images of perfect artisanal ice cream cones, and the incredible spices and flavors of Bali, brought to Brooklyn. But tomorrow (Friday, 4/3), don’t miss the opportunity to associate other words with Laura, namely denim, free drinks and indie pop. Freshly returned from SXSW, and just about to release their new album, Forever for Sure, O’Neill’s band, Laura & Greg, will be playing a free show at LOREN denim (80 Nassau Ave). Starts at 8PM. Greg from the folksy indie-pop duo Laura & Greg animated this music video for their new track 'Muscle Memory', the first song taken from their upcoming full length album 'Forever For Sure.'
The video sees a series of disconnected, whimsical memories linked together through the clever use of a circular visual transition, like a watch face fading to the gas cap on a motorbike or a giant bubblegum bubble turning into a button badge on a jacket lapel.
'Forever For Sure' is due for release on the 12th of May. Keep an eye on the Laura & Greg Facebook or Bandcamp pages for further updates and releases. - Animated Review
