"Humorously taking their name from the bottled remedy to writer’s block, Paul Carew and Keith Hansen offer up the debut project Better Days, their answer to the cutesy pop infecting society today. The entire self-produced project was recorded with just the two of them in Hansen’s home studio.
The first part of the album gives the listener a voyeuristic glimpse into a relationship headed south.
Guys who’ve ever asked their girlfriend or wife, What’s wrong? only to get an icy Nothing will relate to the sentiments of “Say What You Want.” With its thumping bass line, “If I Make It Out Alive” groans with despair with Want to start another life/If I make it out alive.
Along those same lines is “Slow Drain” with its screaming electric guitar and lines like She wants you to buy her all that she desires/ … She’s a slow drain/She’s workin’ you overtime. Hard-rocking “Love You Goodbye” is the angry anthem of the guy who is finally ready to call it quits.
Changing gears, the second half of the album is much more upbeat and filled with the sounds of the ‘80s. “Never Let You Go” has a hooky chorus that will stick in your head for days, while “Nobody” channels Ric Ocasek in his Cars days. Radio-friendly “Stars” is my personal favorite and sure to get lots of plays on your iPod.
“Happy Now” has a ’60’s-Byrds sound and a Prozac-like optimism with lines such as, I don’t mind that tomorrow’s on its way/ … Nothing’s gonna get to me today. Driving guitars and drums speed “Fast Ride” along (no pun intended). And rounding out the album is “Waiting for You,” with the sweet lament of, I’ve been waiting for you like I always will—and a sweet guitar solo to boot.
The Genius of Jack is now working on its sophomore album. I’m sure that news makes stockholders of Old No. 7 very happy."
