If you haven’t already met this talented beauty, allow us to introduce you to Kathryn Dean! She is young, fierce, and extremely talented, to say the least. Her vocals are evocative of Adele, Amy Whinehouse, and Sia with a country twist from time to time, and the thing is… we’re actually obsessed! But I mean, with that kind of sound and talent it takes to produce it, how can we not be?
She recently recorded a cover of One Direction’s "Night Changes" with Pip, who is best known for competing on Season 2 of "The Voice" under Team Adam [Levine]. As if the 1D hit song wasn’t already high enough on the charts, Kathryn and Pip surely took it a couple notches higher after the world was graced with their own beautiful rendition.
However, covering other artists' music is not her only claim to fame by any means. In fact, it’s most definitely her own music that has us sitting up and taking notice! Her new single, "Be My Sin", which went to radio just a few weeks ago, is already being played on stations all around the East Coast. Even better? It just broke the Top 40 chart!
Kathryn recently just released her first full-length debut album, Hit The Lights, and by the sound of her songs, she and her voice are destined for stardom. Her sound is truly one-of-a-kind, making her music that much more attractive to the ear no matter what your musical preferences. Each song on the album is so versatile, being the perfect set of tunes for any kind of mood.
And just in case you’re still not convinced she’s one of the hottest artists to watch…
When it came to completing her first musical masterpiece, she worked with some of the most talented producers in the biz. You know what they say – to be the best, you gotta run with the best, and that is certainly true when it comes to Kathryn and her career. She teamed up with professionals who have worked with stars like Christina Aguilera, Bruce Springsteen, Counting Crows, and more to bring you ten original songs that are nothing other than a reflection of her own experiences and those around her. Psst! Hey Kathryn – it’s working!
Dare to be blown away by Dean and go download “Hit The Lights” right now, and stay tuned for more new music and updates from her on Facebook, Twitter, and Official Website.

Just a quick listen to Kathryn Dean’s Hit The Lights makes it clear that she’s all you’ll ever need. In other words, there’s a track on her album to fit whatever mood you’re in. Whether its rage or raging passion, she’s got you covered. Dean delivers honesty with such a provocative blaze that she beguiles your senses with her sultry melodies and ensnares your soul with her immodest grooves. There’s a dark and wonderful beauty to Kathryn’s music that makes her endlessly intriguing. “Every song represents a different part of who I am as a person,” Kathryn acknowledged in an interview with AXS.
Recently, Dean wrapped up her first Camplified tour. But a lot more has happened in this artist’s career since AXS last spoke with her. “I released my album, Hit The Lights, in April of this year,” Kathryn informed. “It was such an amazing experience from writing all the songs to being able to experiment in the studio. I learned a lot. I have two official music videos out, one for ‘I’ll Show You Crazy,’ and one for ‘Be My Sin.’ I just went to Rio and did a cameo on the show that one of my songs, ‘I Told You So,’ is on. That was so much fun because I got to meet a lot of Brazilian fans and be a part of the show that brought me to Brazil!”
Kathryn’s Twitter feed is peppered with ardent praise from the Latin American country. “Brazilian fans are amazing!” she gushed. “You really can’t beat them in terms of the passion of their fans. I love that they’ve given me all of this support.”
The track that earned Dean such a devoted following in Brazil is a soaring heartfelt ballad driven by an urgent tenderness. The understated power of her sweeping vocals is absolutely compelling. “It’s an instruction manual,” the artist noted. “It’s kind of like translating girl language into guy language. For instance, when a girl in a movie says, ‘Just leave me alone,’ guys are like, ‘Okay, I will.’ But every girl knows that means she wants to be chased after! I’m doing a public service announcement with this song, just trying to help out.” she laughed.
One of the strongest moments on the album is the sparse “Rhythm and Booze.” The track leaves ample space so Dean’s voice can hit you with it’s full dazzle, allowing the lyrics to really sink in. However, it’s hard to tell if the narrator, who at the start of the song is being chastised for her behavior by an overprotective mother, is actually Kathryn or it’s just an alluring character she has created.
“That’s the fun thing about being a writer,” she teased, “I get to portray myself and other people because I’m just trying to give my take on the story of the person, the narrator. It’s really fun to do because it’s not exactly like playing dress-up, but it does involve getting to become a little bit of an actor.”
Kathryn revealed that the song started off as a pun. But then the main thought became “just shut up and kiss me.” “My favorite line is ‘talking kills the mystery’ because sometimes you’re with someone and it’s like, ‘Let’s just forget about everything and live in this moment. Let’s not ruin this, let’s just be here for each other and enjoy what we’re doing.’”
Dean pointed out that the message is similar to the one in “Be My Sin.” “Based on the title -- and the video -- people assume the song is about having an affair. It’s not. It’s actually about not letting the outside world get in between what you have with someone and just spending that moment with them.”
Next week, Kathryn Dean is bringing her irresistible charm to New York City. The artist wouldn’t divulge exactly what she would be doing on the East Coast, but she did urge everyone to follow her on Instagram and Twitter. “I’m going to be announcing a public show, but to find out what that is, you’ll have to watch my social media,” she instructed.
In closing, Kathryn told AXS, “I just want to give a shout out to all my fans for all of your love and support. I hope my music is as therapeutic for you to listen to as it is for me to write.”
