Growing up listening to classic soul records his pops used to play while chilling at the house, the Memphis native has teamed up with his younger brother (producer Teddy Walton) to craft something they call “urban epic”. A fusion of hip hop, soul, R&B and a twist of pop. Or so that’s what the introductory email I got from the homegirl Nancy says. Today's delivery is brought to you by Memphis native June. The TN-to-CA rapper has been making waves with his debut project EVOL, and by the sound of his project, he's ready to break through. The track I'm bringing to you today is entitled "City Love", which has long been a favorite record of mine. Produced by June's brother Teddy Walton, "City Love" is an ode to Memphis hip-hop, sampling the fellow Memphis OGs Three 6 Mafia while adding a hint of Houston's sound. Some of the highlights of the song itself lie within Teddy's soulful production, where he flawlessly blends beautiful samples of Sir Charles Jones' "Just Can't Let Go" and Aaliyah's "At Your Best" before really sparking the instrumental with Three 6. June goes to work with his chill verses, and the result is a song you can put on 3peat. The Tennessee newcomer has been gaining major attention from every major hip-hop magazine, and it will come as no surprise if he continues to improve. It's been a while since we've heard from June but the Memphis MC jumps back on the radar with MMG's latest signee as a guest on his latest track "We On." The Teddy Walton-produced cut features June boasting about his newly acquired broads with a bouncy flow and floating on the hook. The track appears on June's debut EP, EVOL, out now. Growing up in the Gutta of Memphis, its safe to say June was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth. While he might not have been wealthy in the financial sense, he was rich in family, and had a close relationship with his brother Teddy Walton (the producer of this record) and their grandmother. Unfortunately, June and Teddy’s grandmother recently passed away, leaving the grandsons to reflect on where they came from on this heartfelt, passionate promo single. Over Teddy’s poignant sample work, June turns in an emotionally-charged, yet gritty performance on the mic. You can hear the passion and pain in his voice, yet he remains as commanding and assertive as ever.
