Following them was the debut of There There Indigo, a two piece featuring singer/guitarist Josh Doerksen and drummer Julia Stead. The pair had been hard at work leading up to this appearance.
“Julia and I have been dying to play,” Doerksen said.
In the crowd was a kind of who’s-who of Guelph’s indie scene, including members of local favourites Your Neck of the Woods and the Humanzees, and even the music trivia host from Jimmy Jazz. Drummer Stead (actually the former drummer for Your Neck of the Woods) is a very present part of Guelph music, and for good reason – she’s an absolute powerhouse on the drum set.
Doerksen’s ornately melancholic song work was accentuated both by Stead’s expert backing but also by the use of a second microphone with spacey reverb applied to it, creating an atmospheric third dimension to the sound. Doerksen’s commanding versatility in both vocals and guitar-work paired with Stead’s equally versatile and exceptional drumming created a sound that was much larger than anyone would expect a two-piece band to create. The experience was completely unique and continually captivating. There There Indigo is the collaborative project of Josh Doerksen (vocals, guitar) and Julia Stead (drums); two established musicians prepared to make their mark on the music scene. Josh has a wealth of professional experience as a graduate of the Music Program at the University of Guelph, where he studied vocal performance and classical composition. While in Guelph, Josh also aligned himself with Synn Studios, learning the ropes of audio engineering and music production. This experience allowed him to later found his own audio production company: Sprout Wise Productions. After graduating and moving to Toronto, Josh continued to gain insight into the industry with an internship at Indie Pool.
Julias knowledge of drums and percussion has been nurtured through a breadth of musical experience and exposure. She has a decade of musical training, with playing experience in a plethora of genres: symphonies, pit bands, musical productions, rock, punk, jazz, and folk. Having recently played Canadian Music Week and NXNE festivals in 2012/2013, Julia is rapidly becoming a recognizable musician in the Toronto scene. Josh and Julia are fusing their widespread musical experience and focusing their energies into finding success with There There Indigo.
Ambitiously comprised of only two members, There There Indigo aim to create a larger-than-life sound and captivating performance. Their music is swelling with dynamic fluctuation. Live performances are designed to carry listeners through different sensations. Slow and sparse ambiances provide space for melodies to dance. Strong rock grooves develop into syncopated rhythmic breakdowns. Overlaying the instrumentation, Joshs voice carries haunting melodies that resolve into infectious hooks and chants. The resulting sound is at once soothing and provocative.
There There Indigo is set to record and release their debut EP early in 2013, followed by a tour through Southern Ontario.
