Interview on The Source TV - TheSource.com
I tried to skip this week’s Live @ Suite 19 performance. I had a crap load of work to do and not enough time in my day. So I hid in my corner of the office hoping the show would go on and someone else would deal with an artist who’s name I didn’t know. I mean, who’s Joya Bravo?
Joya Bravo is the singer/violinist/rapper whose first notes for Live @ Suite 19 bitch slapped me back into reality.
Born in Queens, New York and raised in Atlanta, Joya ‘s voice is the soothing salve in a world of painfully mundane pre-fab pop stars with electronically altered voices. She’s a lethal, enviable combination of sass and talent. Quite frankly, Joya’s the chick all those other girls should want to be. Her remake of Lil Wayne‘s “A Milli” is both stunning and adorable, dance-inducing and fierce. She plays the violin with the relaxed proficiency of a classically trained musician (which she is). Joya brings fresh energy to “Super Star,” her remake of the Ting Tings‘ “That’s Not My Name.”
Thanks for waking me up, Miss Bravo, and showing me who’s boss. I’m now smart enough to have your music on repeat. - DrJays.com
McDonald's is ringing in the New Year by partnering with popular New York-based Dollar Van Demos for a new series of rap-infused commercials.
The McDonald’s Dollar Menu at Breakfast commercials reenact Dollar Van Demos videos, which showcase talented musicians, emcees and comedians for passengers riding livery commuter vans. The difference is, in the new commercials performers are rapping about McDonald’s all-new Dollar Menu at Breakfast, with real Dollar Van Demo artists Joya Bravo and East New York emcee Wordspit.
“I was shocked, I was like, 'Nah, you playin’,” says Wordspit, of when he first heard about McDonald’s’ collaboration with Dollar Van Demos. “Honestly, I didn’t believe it 'til we were going to start shootin’, and that’s when it finally dawned on me that everything was going down.”
The idea for Dollar Van Demos originated from the mind of Joe Revitte, who also directs and produces the videos, and created his own genre of music reality TV, which has been growing for nearly a year.
“You can catch the van at specific places along a bus route, but people get on the bus and expect to just get where they’re going quickly,” says Dollar Van Demo emcee Joya Bravo, who got her start with Dollar Van Demos after contacting Revitte via Twitter. “Instead of getting the average ride, they’ll get someone performing, and it’s like a little live concert on the bus, so a lot of times people don’t know what to make of it, but they always love it because it’s something different, it’s unexpected.”
The commercials will begin airing today (Jan. 4). ––Caroline Acosta - Vibe Magazine
In a business where its become harder and harder to break new talent, every once and a while we do get a glimpse of Who’s NEXT. After listening to some songs, watching some youtube videos and reading up on her background, I think Joya Bravo is that Artist!
Singer/Songwriter/Rapper/Violinist Joya Bravo is a native of Queens, NY but was raised by her two Jamaican parents in Atlanta, GA. At just 23 years old, Bravo is an accomplished Violinist having played in the Metropolitan Atlanta Youth Symphony Orchestra and has made an appearance alongside Grammy Award winning group The Roots at the Highline Ballroom.
Currently, Joya can be seen in the new McDonalds “Dollar Van Demos” commercials promoting their new breakfast menu (performing a song she helped Co-Produce).
If you are on the hunt for an eclectic artist, keep tabs on this one as she sites Grace Jones, Serj Tankian (System of a Down), Radiohead, Sarah Brightman, Bob Marley and many others as musical influences. *thinks about what this could mean* A fierce Grace Jones visual, the emotive vocals of Radiohead mixed with a Bob Marley message and the international appeal of Sarah Brightman. I dig it!!!! - WhatsTheT.com
All of us enjoy Mickey D's every now and then, and if you've watched TV lately you may have come across the new McDonald's commercials over the holidays, especially the one with a young lady rapping and singing in the back of a van, well that is Joya Bravo.
The 365 Black McDonald's-endorsed Dollar Van Demos campaign commercial has launched the first of a series of commercials featuring talented artists, over the Christmas holiday. Joya Bravo also co-produced the record, which she performs in the commercial and is no stranger to the stage from the looks of the performance below.
