"Review of the EP - The Sun the Moon and what's left in between"

The Sun, the Moon and What's Left In Between - New (sorta) EP from Jordan Holder. Jordan is a friend of mine and I've really enjoyed getting to play some of these songs with him out some. I believe we will be playing a gig June 24 at the Acoustic Cordiale in Sherman Oaks. Definitely come -- and bring your friends.

The album begins with "Take your Time" -- which is pretty pumping for an acoustic tune, if you ask me. And, as you listen to the pulsing guitar, you'll realize it's quite an inspiring tune. The song is about, well, taking your time. But more specifically, it's about making it through this day to get to the next. And that's something I always need encouragement with. Sometimes stuff sucks. And everybody's got that. Universal, you know?

The dynamic gets pulled down for "If You Felt the Same" and this is where Jordan's Ryan Adams (RA) influence shows itself. Jordan and I are both avid RA & the Cardinals fans and this one definitely cures the itch.

"Down" is next on the list: a cleverly written song with a melody that will stick in your head like nobody's business -- but you'll love every second of it. It features a dynamic a hair lower than the previous track and it's real heartfelt (something that permeates the dynamic of this whole EP). The punchline of the song doesn't come until the chorus and until then you can just wonder. After "I can't fall...", everything sorta falls into place. Clever usage of a normal love cliche.

"You Only Get One Chance" is a slow, intimate one. This one has some added depth as a result of the 12-string. It's subtle, yet noticable. The homesick feeling really takes you out of your own living room and puts you somewhere distant. The melancholy mood is furthered with a harmonica towards the end. Again, pretty RAesque.

"Harder Now" is certainly the most uppity song on the album, but completely sincere all the same. A jumping right hand makes a defined groove. Nothing but thoughtful lyrics just like the whole album -- makes me wish a lyric sheet came with it. But, hey, it's iTunes.
