Johanna And The Dusty Floor Set To Release Stunning EP The Forest
Announces New York Live Dates
Johanna And The Dusty Floor is the piano pop project of Australian born songstress and pianist, Johanna Cranitch. Now based in NYC, Johanna And The Dusty Floor will release her debut EP The Forest on November 15th, 2010.
The Forest EP is an exciting collection of songs written over a year’s time across the world in places like Italy, Australia and New York. Depictions of nomadic life take form with quirky electronic beats, dreamy piano and lush string arrangements supplied by Sarah McCallum and members of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Through the synthesis of these sounds Johanna creates an album of heartbreaking harmonies and gorgeous soundscapes best showcased in the first single “Forest of Sorrows.” On “This City” Johanna shows her love for singers like Kate Bush and St. Vincent. Her melodies leap with childlike abundance and her harmonies obviously informed by her days studying jazz at the Australian Institute of Music. “Witch Shoes” is a haunting power ballad, with intriguing layers of melodies that set the scene for a fairy tale journey. The EP makes a lovely introduction to Johanna’s rich and ripe voice, marked by unique tales and compositions.
Growing up reading Grimm’s Fairy Tales and listening to everything from Gorecki to Fleetwood Mac, Johanna’s intake of literary, visual art and musical influences invoked feelings of fantasy, excitement and escape. Johanna is inspired by all things artistic; visually and sonically. She loves the works of the powerful body artist Kiki Smith and the conceptual artist Yayoi Kusama, who are both strong creative women with vastly different aesthetics that have shaped her songwriting process while creating The Forest.
Johanna And The Dusty Floor will be playing shows in New York to support the release of The Forest, including a Tuesday residency at Rockwood Music Hall in November. We are thrilled to present this amazing new talent to you.

Bio
Singer songwriter Johanna Cranitch tours the world for bands such as the Cranberries, Wheatus and her own outfit, Johanna and the Dusty floor. Born into a musical Hungarian family, she grew up singing everything from Puccini to jazz in her native Australia. Based in Brooklyn, New York, Johanna's Synth Pop outfit is reminiscent of Kate Bush, Massive Attack and the Cocteau Twins. She is a regular on the Paris scene as much as her hometown of Brooklyn,NY playing for such venues as Le Baron and Parties for people such as actor James Franco and artist Adarsha Benjamin (Autre magazine launch) but when it comes to her online presence Johanna is master of her own universe.
She has a creative live show that consists of three band members and electronic loops, and has played sold out shows at venues such as Glasslands in Brooklyn, NY.
Johanna has been enjoying a lot of success with her debut album released in 2011 entitled "Northern Lights" and is set to release her second full length in 2013.
Noisey recently premiered her beautiful music video for the song "Fishbones" shot in Iceland. See here:

SELECT PRESS QUOTES:
“Cranitch begins with piano-based compositions that favor sweeping melodies and her dreamscape vocals -- celestially graceful and sublime -- and then, adding strings, an electronic kit bag of instrumental backing and densely layered harmonies, builds the tracks into grandly cinematic but surprisingly agile productions.
This is artful, imaginative music that never seems stodgy, overly dramatic or weighed down by its own big ideas.”

“There’s also a certain vibe to the songs on this album that recalls Christine McVie, not just in songwriting style, but in that Cranitch shares a seemingly deep Contralto vocal range with the Fleetwood Mac singer at times. It must be said, though, that Cranitch possesses an astonishing range, being able to hit some particularly high notes, too. The songs are well constructed and lush...”

“...heartfelt, beautifully crafted stories set to the sparest piano, shuffling percussion and subtle electronic beats. Backed by the beautiful harmonies of Dani Elliott and Anthea White, Johanna’s dark vocal on ‘Love Is A Breakable Thing’ creates a foreboding mood that sent a chill up my spine the first time I heard it and haunts me still.”

After blanketing the tail-end of last year with a handful of gorgeous and melodic layers on The Forest EP, Johanna Cranitch (aka Johanna & The Dusty Floor) is scheduled to deliver a proper introduction this June alongside her debut album, Northern Lights on Red Valise Records.
