Among many other SoUPFEST highlights:
J. Kennedy Mabry frappe-ing Bluegrass Angst with great guitarist Matt Rogers...
Paul McDonald, whose reviews of spoken word CDs graced the pages of The Louisville Courier-Journal on the day of SoUPFest, knocking the audience’s socks into wash, only to be metaphorically shot by a starter’s pistol for exceeding dumb time (limit)...
Jordan Green (Murkland, Hozomeen Press): “Spit it out like raw catfish”...
Kate Teegarden, in Uma wig: “Sometimes I pretend I’m your mistress”...
5-piece fusion band backing Michael Campbell, also in wig (his, Cher’s): “65 years old and they make her pee in a cup / Don’t want no doped-up senior citizens / Mopping the floors in mensware, do we?”...
W. Loran Smith (Night Train, Plinth Books), backed up by Dan O’Brien on sax: “the sun is going down / and the waves are lapping gently over the dog food cans”...
The Last Chances, rocking with poets Joseph Bialek (new chapbook! I need one!) and Michael Crossley...
Bum rushing the stage, Ellen Hager stopped time altogether with her Poem, “New Rebel Yell.”

Bio
Born and raised in the Bluegrass State, JK Mabry is blazing a trail with his own recipe of traditional singer/songwriter mixed with folk Americana to create a style unique to the local Louisville music community. With his versatile sound propelling him to the regional radar, he has shared the bill with several national acts ranging from The Dunwells, The Spring Standards, Uncle Kracker, Charlie Worsham, American Aquarium and Curtis McMurtry. Always taking advantage of good opportunities, Mabry has played the Standard Hotel in Hollywood for the Desert Nights Concert Series, the Sunday Writers Showcase at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville and was even named a finalist in the John Francis and John Carter Cash Songwriting Competition at the one and only Johnny Cash Cabin. Mabry recorded with John Carter Cash and Ken Coomer of Wilco at The Johnny Cash Cabin Studio last summer.
Mabrys latest single Laurel Canyon is already being hailed as his breakthrough recording. With the ability to take a simple folk song and transform it into an epic storytelling odyssey, Mabry has fused chorus singers and a horn section into this album, which is being fine tuned, produced and mixed by Matt Davidson. Laurel Canyon is slated for release this summer with the Laurel Canyon single available for download now on iTunes and can be streamed on YouTube.
