Last night at the Opera House JJ Thompson and The Pillars proved the Toronto Music Scene can still produce original young talent.
The Pillars, who headlined the show, played to an intimate crowd that quieted for the first time that night just seconds into their first song. All his music was original and with lines like, “I found the strength to see your grave, and when I cried you made it Rain,” there proved purpose in the message behind his music. But thankfully Thompson stayed away from singing not another soul-searching love ballad in any of his 10-song line-up.
Lead singer JJ Thompson’s vocals were deep and soulful, years beyond the singer’s age and at times seemed to channel the depth’s a much darker generation. It was awesome to watch the process of Thompson unleashing his raw and well-groomed vocals with unexpected force at just the right notes. JJ Thompson’s and the Pillars had a symphony of beats that complimented some dark poetics and upbeat charm. Not pop. Not mainstream. But perpetually on the verge of breaking into something bigger than anything around at the moment. Inspired-sound from the best of 90s Seattle rock scene, with up-tempo odes mixed in.
Torontonians should all be looking forward to the release of JJ Thompson and the Pillars debut-album. - Angela Marie

There is no gimmick to us, we are just genuine musicians that want to perform" JJ and The Pillars are on the rise, and are starting to prove success through out the Toronto music scene bringing in the likes of Sam Roberts, Matt Mayes, and more, making appearances at their shows. Most recently they have made the Top 6 out of near 1000 submissions for 102.1 The Edge's Next Big Thing. JJ and The Pillar's interview and their first single "The Wolves" aired on Adam's Show on 102.1 The Edge in July 2014.
