Bio
I got my start singing harmonies with my twin sister in the church choir. I participated in everything musical I could find in a small town- school chorus, select harmony groups, Northeastern District Choruses, talent shows, music-a-thons, school plays and musicals, etc. When I turned twelve, I tried out for a singing part in a movie starring Peter Berg ( of "Chicago Hope" tv fame) and got it. I went to college at sixteen, was a published poet at nineteen, and decided to try singing and songwriting as a career at age twenty. I released a few demos while I was searching for my sound and voice as a songwriter and in 2004, I released my first full-length cd "Ghosts in My Closet." I feel in the last several years I have really honed in on my niche in the music world, and my latest body of work, "A Lu11aby for E11en West," is indicative of that. It is a feminist concept album, which combines my two greatest passions: music and feminism. I would describe my music and my voice as melodic, emotional, honest, thought-provoking, somewhat melancholy. My influences are Patty Griffin, Joni Mitchell, Eva Cassidy, Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Bonnie Raitt, Karen Carpenter, Aretha Franklin, so many. I think what sets me apart from other bands is simple: a unique and memorable voice and well-crafted songs that are about more than the standard fare of "love and loss." Instead, I attempt to write specific to my experiences while still maintaining a universal appeal. My story is every woman's story.
