"Jai Fears"

First, tell us a little more about you?

My name is Jai (Pronounced Jay) Fears I’m from Detroit, MI born and raised I sing pop music I’ve been singing professionally for about 4 years.

Why do you do what you do?

I’ve loved music since before I knew I could do music. Being a performer is something that’s just in me I’ve been dancing since I was 7 and putting on shows for my step dad’s Superbowl party since I was about that age too. I love to see the genuine smile on people’s faces when they enjoy what you’re doing, it almost brings tears to my eyes.

When did you start becoming an artist?

I want to say right during my senior year in high school. I graduated from High School in Burbank, CA.

Do you want to pursue this as a career?

Oh I already am!

Who inspires/Influences your work?

I have a few first off I always inspire to be the greatest which in my opinion is Michael Jackson. I’m heavily influenced and inspired by him as well as Fantasia, Beyonce, Morris Day and The Time, Earth Wind and Fire, Frankie Beverly and Maze, a few others as well and you can see this if you were to ever see a show of mine.

What is your favorite project that you came out with?

It’s actually the one I’m working on now that’s in the early stages of development, but I love the concept of it and am really excited about it.

Are there any websites,events/shows,etc that you have been in?

I’ve performed in a few festivals in 2010, The Ann Arbor Summer Art Fair, and Art’s Beats and Eats. Each time I did an hour show and actually had an encore for Art’s Beats and Eats. Last year I performed on BET’s 106 and Park and won their Wild Out Wednesdays competition for my division of Female R&B/Hip-Hop. I’ve also performed at Detroit’s own Ribs and Soul festival twice. - Def Pop

"Charlie Wilson Protege Jai Fears Wins 106 and Park"

Although recent “106 & Park” winner Jai Fears isn’t just starting out in the music industry, she is starting to put the industry on its ear. The singer-songwriter has already enjoyed an extensive career as a background dancer for a virtual who’s who of contemporary artists, including Aretha Franklin, Charlie Wilson, Vikia Winans and N’Sync. And while you listen to Jai Fears sing, you also have to watch her sing. Her pitch perfect and beautifully choreographed performances are earning Fears the praise of an ever-growing and intensely faithful fan base. Just prior to Fears’ performance with singing sensation Charlie Wilson, rolling out spoke with the performer about where she’s going and how she plans to get there. –roz edward

You recently won the ”106 & Park” Wild Out Wednesday competition. What do you have coming up next?

We’re working on getting an album out and doing a CD release [and] listening party.

You’ve got a couple of hit singles out, “Mickeyish” and “Hush.” How did those names come about?

Mickeyish is about guys who talk a lot of talk, but they can’t walk it. They always say when it comes down to it … that they would do something or confront someone who tries to holler. But when it actually happens, they don’t do anything. It’s a play on the song “Hey Mickey” when Mickey is a male cheerleader. “Hush,” aka “You Need to Shut Up” is pretty much the same thing … about guys who would be better off not saying anything.

Who are your favorite artists?

Definitely Beyoncé and Adele, and I am still a Brandy fan. I don’t care how long it’s been since she came out with an album, she’s still my number one favorite. I am really into EDM music right now and I love Calvin Harris, I love Rihanna and I love Drake. Those are the people that are in my iPod right now.

You’ve worked in music, dance and acting. Do you have a preference?

I love them all, but if I had to pick one it would be music — I live on stage. … I started as a dancer when I was 16 out in Los Angeles, then I came home to Detroit and began singing. … But even if I wasn’t doing what I’m doing now, I’d be working in the entertainment industry in one way or another. But I am expanding my [repertoire] and I appeared as Sweetie in the independent film, Joy Road. It was filmed in Detroit and the director, Harry Davis, is also from Detroit.
Do you have a mentor?
… My boss, the man I work for — Charlie Wilson.

"Celebrity Beach Weekend San Carlos Mexico"

Jai Fears was born and raised in the city of Detroit where entertainment has been a part of her life since day one.

Before she was able to walk, her parents saw star written all over her face, and began to place her in several commercials (WNBA) and print ads (Nike). At the age of 14, Alecia moved to Burbank, CA for four years, and sang, danced, and acted her way to a very impressive track record. Now 20, and back in her hometown of Detroit, she hasnt slowed down a bit, and her humbling, yet feisty persona continues to leave indelible impressions on everyone she meets. Jai is definitely no stranger to the spotlight. Her impressive resume consists of diverse span of singing, acting, dancing, choreographing, and modeling. She has toured as a dancer with N Sync, Aaron Carter, Aretha Franklin, Charlie Wilson, TLC, Ray J, Johnnie Gill, and Vikki Winans. She was also witnessed by millions at the 2006 Super Bowl XL as a dancer for Stevie Wonder, John Legend and India Arie. She has landed speaking roles in major motion pictures such as The Wood (Taye Diggs), The Rundown (The Rock), MVP (Wood Harris), and a leading role in "Crossover" as she portrays the subtle but explosive role of "Eboni", co-staring Eva Pigford and Wayne Brady.

Flo Rida

Flo Rida(pronounced flow-ri-duh, the African-American Vernacular English pronunciation of "flow rider") (born December 16, 1981 as Tramar Dillard in Opa-Locka, Florida) is an African American rapper. He chose the name "Flo Rida" because he is from Florida and in reference to his rap styles. He made his mainstream debut in the song "Bitch I'm From Dade County" on DJ Khaled's album We the Best. He started appearing in mixtapes in 2006, and began affiliating himself with other known Florida rappers such as Rick Ross and Trick Daddy. Way before We the Best, Flo Rida has released a street single entitled "Birthday", featuring Rick Ross. He then released a club based single entitled "Low" featuring T-Pain which hit #1 as the most downloaded song on iTunes in November 2007, as well as reaching #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Rapper Flo Rida is the Carol City native being dubbed the new 'It' man of Hip-Hop, and it's easy to see why. With no prior studio record and relatively moderate promotion of his profile, the rapper gained respect through his debut single 'Low' feat. T-Pain. On Billboard Hot 100 chart, the song went from #91 in the first week to #64 before finally taking a big leap to #4. In its fourth week, the single held strong to the same position despite new competitors that kept turning up. Radio outlets gave heavy spins of the song and its digital download on iTunes rocketed to over 120,000 hits. Ringtone request meanwhile, was also constantly pouring in, nailing the song a third position on Billboard Hot RingMaster chart. With such attainment early in his career, there is no doubt that his name may be put in line with the kings of Hip-Hop someday.

By 2001, he followed the footsteps of his brother-in-law by becoming the hype man for 2 Live Crew's Fresh Kid Ice. Before leaving for a task in Hawaii, he recorded a solo demo with a consent from his fellow Groundhoggz members. Upon returning home to Florida, he received a call from Donald DeGrate, Jr. aka DeVante Swing who was by then a former Jodeci member, and asked to meet him in California. Although he was taken under the care of A&R, he still had to hunt for labels and endure rejections from huge recording houses such as Capitol and Deathrow. Future seemed bleak at this point. Flo Rida strayed in motels and sometimes on the street, only to pursue his dream. Still, he recorded several mixtapes that eventually helped him building a bridge with 'people with influence'.

Unexpectedly, the opportunity came not far from home. Three years after living in California, he was back to Florida to have a meeting with E-Class, founder of indie label Poe Boy who happened to grab a hold of his demo. Within months he was signed to - Conventions and Visitors Bureau

"Jai Fears has nothing to Fear"

By Tavares S. Carney

20-year old Jai Fears definitely has nothing to fear. Arriving at Star Factory Studios in Southfield, Michigan just up from a previous nights 3-song set at the Detroit Fine Arts Theatre, Jai is ready for the world! This rising star was introduced to the entertainment industry early on. Born and raised in Detroit, Jai has always dreamed of a successful acting career. Little did she know not only would she have a blossoming career as an actress, but also as a singer, dancer, choreographer and model. Miss Fears had already had commercial (WNBA) and print credits (Nike), as well as dance training from the renown Detroit-Windsor Dance Academy by the time she was 14.

In pursuit of an acting career, Jai and her mom relocated to Burbank, California, where Jai attended John Burrows High School, serving as co-captain of the cheerleading squad and President of the Hip Hop Step Team. She continued her dance training at two of Hollywoods most prestigious dance centers at The Edge (Hollywood, CA) and The Millennium Dance Complex (N. Hollywood, CA). When asked how she managed to find balance between attending school, dance classes, acting and school activities, Jai responds, "It worked, everyone out there is in the industry . . . so they (the schools) understand having to leave for auditions, plus I was always ready for whatever. I had clothes in my car (laughs)." She also made special mention of her mother, thanking her "for never being a stage mom, being very laid back and just letting me do my thing. She was never pressuring, strictly supportive." Jai is her moms only child, having stepbrothers and sisters, as well as paternal siblings. A younger brother passed away at the age of four due to unforeseen circumstances. Jai says of her family, "They are all supportive and are leaving the entertainment industry up to me."

US: Who is Jai Jai Fears?

AJF: I am a singer, dancer, choreographer, actress and model who is hard working, God fearing, strong willed, nice sense of style, big laugher, definitely not a morning person, and a non-cusser (she laughs).

US: Who would you say your favorites are in the industry in tune with what youre trying to do and where youre trying to go? Even more so, who would you like to work with?

AJF: Janet (Jackson), Brittany (Spears) and Madonna.

US: Tell us about your new single, "T&A."

AJF: Well T&As concept came from Squeeze (my manager) and I trying to come up with other body parts that started with the letter T and the letter A, aside from the obvious. We wanted to do something PG (rated) that the parents would understand and approve.

US: So T&A stands for what?

AJF: T&A is an acronym for Thighs and Abs. The song is basically sending a message to young girls that theres more to us than our bodies. We must maintain some dignity and integrity in the way we carry ourselves. We must demand respect.

US: So lets talk about Jai, the dancer, the choreographer. Tell US whom youve worked with mainstream and independently?

AJF: Lets see. I have been lead choreographer for Charlie Wilson and assistant choreographer for Aretha Franklin. I also danced for Stevie Wonder, John Legend and India Arie during Super Bowl XL and have toured with the likes of Aretha Franklin, Charlie Wilson, N'Sync, Ray J, Aaron Carter and TLC. Also worked with super hot up and coming artist JiG, and crazy hot up and coming choreographer, Brandon Lee, both of whom now work as dance instructors at Star Factory.

US: Any teachers you care to mention that influenced who you are today?

AJF: Yes, Dave Scott at The Edge, who is the choreographer for B2K and Marcus Houston; Jason Wright, a choreographer at The Millennium Dance Complex; Squeeze, my producer and JiG, a fellow artist and choreographer for keeping me on my toes.

US: What do you feel are the pros and cons of being a female in a male-dominated industry.

AJF: Well, for the most part, a lot of guys feel like they can talk to us any kind of way. They think we dont know anything and at times, its very intimidating. All we can do is be strong and dont give in. Amongst the females, I just try not to catfight and am mostly the mediator in the group. I believe in there being power in numbers ad females supporting each other.

US: Have you had or can you share with us one of your not so pleasant experiences and how you handled it.

AJF: Sure, I was a touring dancer for a very highly respected singer. I wore an item of clothing by a particular designer that was pointed out by a competing dancer. It seems petty, but the designers name must not have been acceptable and the name was assumed and assimilated with who I was "thought" to be and I was terminated. I kept it moving because things like this always happen in this industry. Its very fickle. You just have to be extremely conscious of everything you say and do. It was a learning experience for sure.

"FILM: Made In Detroit"

The final two on this list of Detroit filmmakers feature a pair of movies, one that had a premiere a couple weeks ago at the Star of Southfield and one that will be premiering soon at the beginning of the new year. First is Shawn Woodard’s horror satire “Office Outbreak”. An enjoyable, unusual blend of comedy and gore, it gave the audience a different type of urban horror movie that they are accustomed to seeing, having the ability to both scare and tickle you simultaneously. Voted best picture runner up & best cast runner up by the Bare Bones International Film Festival, it is indeed “A Dead Serious Comical Satire”.

Bio

Jai (Pronounced Jay) Fears is the ultimate performer. Twice in 2012 she competed on BETS 106 and Park Wild out Wednesdays and won each time making her the 2012 All Star for Hip-Hop/R&B, Female division. At Ford's Arts Beats and Eats festival, Michigan's most anticipated festival of the year, she went from performing in front of 20 people to a standing ovation and standing room only massive crowd by the end of her 60 min set that turned into 75 mins from a encore. Jai was also the only artist to receive an encore out of the hundreds of bands that performed. Jai also performed to a sold out crowd for a Michael Jackson tribute at Detroit's Chene Park Amphitheater (6,000 seats). From her and her mother being homeless her senior year of high school to one day waking up to a unknown skin disease that consumed 90% of her body, Jai Fears is going strong as if nothing ever happened and will continue to go hard until her name is headlined on the marquee.

Ms. Fears was born and raised in the great city of Detroit, MI. She has been in the arts since the early age of seven and always had a love for singing and dancing, along with an unusual love (especially for her age) for old school R&B music which she picked up from her mother listening to oldies day in and day out. Jai never knew she could become a singer she actually thought only certain or "special" people could become artists. That all changed the day her Stepfather came home from work telling her about a local modeling school he heard advertising on the radio looking for models, and actors to compete in a national talent competition in L.A. She went and the rest is history.

To date, Jai Fears can be seen all over the entertainment spectrum from her many talents alongside singing which include dancing, acting, and modeling. Other credits include dancing for the legendary Aretha Franklin, currently dancing for Charlie Wilson, and NSYNC, or branding national print ads for Nike, and Degree deodorant, as well as on screen in feature films The Wood, MVP, or Crossover as she portrays the subtle but explosive role of Eboni, co-starring with Eva Pigford and Wayne Brady. Now almost completely focusing on her music, Jai has already opened up for Newcomer Diggy Simmons son of Rap Legend Rev Run, the legendary Charlie Wilson of The Gap Band 3 times, Melissa Morgan, and has performed for standing room only crowds at Detroits own Hard Rock Caf, as well as annual music festivals like the Ribs-n-Soul and Detroits SummerJamz hosted by Radio Ones Hot 107.5. Each year Ms. Fears proves how determined and how much of a hard worker she is. In July of 2012 Jai performed 5 shows in 5 hours at 6 Flags Chicago receiving rave reviews from new fans who found it hard to step away from her show to continue enjoying the park. Jais EP is in the works which will feature her 2 hit singles Get it Girl" which is available on iTunes and "Disconnected".
