Whenever there's new music on the scene, we can't help but get totally pumped. This year's Project Aloft Star contest came with so many awesome contestants that it was really hard to choose. However, after all the votes are tallied there can only be one winner, and this year's singer-songwriter is seriously cool.
Say, "Hello," to Jackie Stabb, your favorite new indie darling. You can check out the Ohio native on Facebook here and stream some sounds from her Little Voice EP, released earlier this fall, below! We are really into these synth-pop melodies by the super talented musician and give her major high-fives on winning this year's Project Aloft Star competition. Yay, Jackie Stabb! - Nylon Magazine
So, I kind of have a soft spot for Ohio and this next artist spotlight is about Jackie Stabb, a singer from Columbus! Her voice reminds me of UK singer Emma Louise, but her songs have a little more kick to them. “Night Talks” is one of those songs you could sing along to while jumping up and down on your bed. I’m actually doing that right now…while writing this post. Okay, so I’m not, but I was when I first listened to the song. She is currently working on her debut EP and we can’t wait to hear it! - Unoffish
Tabii ondan önce ‘Night Talks‘un tadina bakmayi unutmayin. - Rave Mag

Another one of my favorite shows at midpoint was Chelsea Burgin, otherwise known by her alter ego and band name Jackie Stabb. This up and coming indie pop genius stole the stage at the Know Theatre on Saturday night. As soon as she began performing the entire room went silent. This was the first time I had ever heard any of her music, but it still rendered me speechless. Her voice captivated the audience while the emotional nature of her lyrics gave each one of us a first class seat into her inner most thoughts. - Remi Walz
Columbus, Ohio-based singer and songwriter Jackie Stabb brought lovely, melancholic vocals with undercurrents of ominous edge to the Know Theatre, while her band (uniformly clad in white oxfords and black ties) produced backing soundscapes that felt nicely centered around Stabb’s voice, rather than adding unnecessary layers to the sound.
Sounds like The Temper Trap or Small Black fronted by Karen Elson. - Division St. Harmony

Having taken a trip to LA earlier in the year, Jackie Stabb aka CitR favourite Chelsea Burgin has offered up new track Night Talks as the first cut from the recording sessions. Perhaps cleaner and certainly more chorus orientated than her previous endeavours, it certainly feels like a natural musical development, reminding me of a softer Yeah Yeah Yeahs, or in part like the more accessible moments of Broken Social Scene. Check out Night Talks below, taken from her forthcoming EP, and keep up with Jackie Stabb over at Facebook. - Crack in the Road
Crack in the Road turned me on to this track by Chelsea Burgin and I love it so much here I am posting about it with the song playing on repeat soon afterwards, her Soundcloud is the only online presence I found and this track "Pocketful of Dreams" is the only track to be found on it at present but with a post on The Recommender as long ago as December 2011 stating 'dozens of demos' it's clear that this is not the start of a new act, I'll concentrate on this track though as it's my own only reference point thus far....
"Pocketful of Dreams" intoxicates immediately and makes me ache all over, the perfect late-at-night soundtrack to those intimate, wistful moments, with a hazy, broken-hearted romanticism filling the air as Chelsea's beautiful, soothing vocals beguile at every word. The melody is simple, just basic guitar strums and echoes - it's all that's needed to bring goosebumps. How I wish I was there to hear those demos nearly two years ago. More soon I hope. - Just Music That I like
It’s been too long since we last checked in with Chelsea Burgin, and it would appear that things are very much on the up. In a message posted on her Soundcloud, she states “I found this song I wrote a while back(and played guitar poorly to) and for some reason it seems fitting to share now”, however it doesn’t feel like just a throwaway track; there’s a genuine sincerity and understated beauty to Pocketful Of Dreams. As with previous songs, much of the breathtaking elegance comes from Burgin’s divine vocals, mixed with just the right amount of silky reverb. To quote again from her Soundcloud… this is just the beginning… - Crack in the Road
Here’s someone you probably haven’t heard of, but trust me you will soon! Introducing Columbus, Ohio’s own Jackie Stabb. A friend of mine told me the other day that I need to check out her videos on YouTube. That voice! It’s so beautiful and captivating! From the two songs she has posted so far, this is very soothing and seductive music suited for a late night. So far Jackie does not have an album out yet, but when she does I will be eager to hear it. Jackie will be playing a show at Kobo in Columbus this Saturday at 9pm. Details about her show and her music can be found at Jackie’s official Facebook page.
Here are her first two “Stabb Session” videos. I’m hoping more sessions are on the way soon!

Chelsea Burgin: Disposable Me
Please excuse me as I post what will probably be the lowest sound quality of a song that I ever blog about, ever. A download of Chelsea Burgin’s ‘Disposable Me’ has a bit rate of 64kbps. So granted, it’s not one for sophisticated speaker set-ups or a nightly DJ set. But any intelligent set of ears will identify that beneath the crackles and half-portions is a delightfully brittle song, with Burgin’s voice somehow resonating above the speckled, almost-inaudible percussion. Ardent audiophiles will hate this - the rest of us can give it a deserving chance. - Music Fan's Mic

New: Chelsea Burgin – Bill
I’m fairly sure that Chelsea Burgin is my soulmate. I don’t think she knows it yet, but I’m pretty sure I’m right. With her cutesy good looks and splendid voice, the term ‘perfect woman’ may seem like a drastic overstatement, but trust me on this one. New demo Bill is a spider-web fragile gem, recorded on an iPhone so forgive the audio quality, yet the talent is all too clear. Yearning and romanticized, Bill appears to be a figment of Chelsea’s imagination, buried deep in her subconscious. Check it out below. - Crack In The Road
New: Chelsea Burgin – Love Letter
Dear Chelsea,
How are you?
I just heard your track Love Letter so I thought I’d drop you a line so you know how on top of the world it made me feel. Your intensely delicate vocals and adorable lyrics have me wishing to be the recipient of your beautiful contemplation.
Write back when you get a chance.
Yours irretrievably,
Josh
P.S. I don’t even mind that you didn’t play the guitar yourself. - Crack In The Road
So yesterday sucked, right? Not only did I not receive a single Valentines (thanks guys), but I also discovered my #2 heartthrob Lana Del Rey is dating a hillbilly from a distinctly average Scottish group. Devastated just doesn’t cut it. Luckily for my broken heart, my #1 crush, a certain Miss Chelsea Burgin graced our ears with a sublime cover of Mazzy Star’s haunting Fade Into You. Entirely acoustic, Chelsea’s spotless vocals fit the track perfectly, making for a truly stunning listen.
Check out Fade Into You below and grab a free download. - Crack In The Road
New: Jackie & The Stabbs – I’m Not Waiting
If you checked out my Sound of 2012 list, you may recognize the vocals on this track as belonging to a certain Chelsea Burgin, who also lends her fall-head-over-heels-in-love tone and irresistible charm to Columbus five piece Jackie & The Stabbs. I’m Not Waiting is a gorgeous piano ballad, in a similar vein to the likes of Feist and Regina Spektor, with Chelsea’s stunning vocals backed up by an equally bewitching instrumental section. - Crack In The Road

Sound of 2012 (Part I – Josh)
When I saw the BBC Sound of 2012 list, my heart sank ever so slightly. Don’t get me wrong, I see the commercial potential in almost all of the acts shortlisted, it’s more that the entirety of the list is shockingly predictable, and in some cases, bizarrely misguided. Take Frank Ocean, one of the most highly sought after acts in world hip-hop, having featured on tracks with Jay-Z, Kanye West and Tyler the Creator, as well as writing hits for Beyonce, the 24 year old is hardly a rising star. Elsewhere, Azealia Banks is another strange choice, having been kicking about for almost three years now, and little needs to be said about the inclusion of dubstep parody act Skrillex.
However, all that said, I love the debate these articles bring about, and in this case, the BBC Sound of… has spawned a host of ‘alternative’ lists. Again, I’m yet to be completely enamored with any of the selections I’ve seen, with most websites choosing to pick artists they’ve spent the last twelve months salivating over, rather than attempting to predict whom they will be falling head over heels for in 2012. My selections aren’t as such acts whom I believe will break into the mainstream consciousness, more artists that I perceive may well look back upon 2012 as a vitally important year in their musical development. So without further ado, in no particular order, here’s a selection of acts I’ll be watching out for 2012.
Jamie Isaac
How Jamie Isaac hasn’t had A&R scouts hounding his every move is completely beyond me. This seventeen year old kid is one of the most talented songwriters I’ve heard in years, composing his ballads with an elegance far more mature than his age would suggest. His debut track Intro / Drowning Roots may well be the most emotionally open composition you’ll hear this year. Comparisons will undoubtedly be drawn to James Blake, yet Isaac conjures up more organic surroundings, with hints of Perfume Genius in the minimal piano sections and fragile vocals. Having played a few shows in London over the past couple of months, Isaac is sure to stamp his name on the local scene in 2012.
Blaenavon
Imagine the songwriting ability of WU LYF combined with the angelic vocals of Wild Beasts with a lurking post-rock inspiration, and you begin to understand Blaenavon’s sound. It’s hard to believe that these kids are still at school, and the trio even found time to drop a host of demos a month or so back, with the seven minute epic Swans and the vulnerable Denim Patches being particular highlights. Their sound is raw yet realistic, embodying a youthful spirit so undeniable that allows each track to demand repeated listens. Having been given a glimpse of future tracks, I can safely say that Blaenavon are pretty special.
Ethos Wolviis
These guys only have one track available so far, but wait, stay with me; it just so happens to be one of the finest tracks of this year. Also, the singularity of their musical output thus far isn’t due to lack of effort, the duo have been courageously taking part in Occupy Wall Street since September 17th, and therefore unable to have regular access to a recording studio. Anyway, their debut track MTV completely blew me away earlier in the year, mixing the tender lo-fi aesthetics of Youth Lagoon and the songwriting capabilities akin to the likes of Wavves or Washed Out. With more material expected early in 2012, I’m extremely excited to hear what Ethos Wolviis have to offer over the coming months.
Explicits
The side project of 800Beloved frontman Sean Lynch, Explicits embody a majestic atmosphere so scarcely found in contemporary music. With a host of tracks available ranging from the entirely instrumental, brooding RAM, to the harrowingly regretful US, alongside a plethora of teaser videos, the hype surrounding Explicits is sure to grow. Lynch’s remorse filled vocals are lightly comparable to Matt Berninger, whilst the simplistic yet effective percussion sections are entirely unique. With full length release The Uncanny Valley out in 2012, I’m expecting great things from Explicits.
PHOSPHOR
Electro-gaze outfit PHOSPHOR have all the making of a hype band already; hailing from London, with a handful of starry-eyed, trance inspired tracks under their belts and (from what I’ve heard is) a stunning live show, it’s seems only a matter of time before their music is exposed to larger audiences. From only a couple of listens, The XX influence is strikingly prominent but not overpowering, with tinges of My Bloody Valentine shining through on the shoegaze driven Blossom. With new track Numb released at the tail end of last week, PHOSPHOR are highly unlikely to stay under the radar much longer.
The Sayitaints
Another act with only one song available so far, Baltimore duo The Sayitaints debut track Flutter is one of the most majestic compositions you’ll hear this year. Grounded by indie-pop influences such as The Antlers, Flutter exposes it’s - Crack In The Road

As time goes on, I’m becoming increasingly more acceptant of, ‘not knowing’, when it comes to the artists I discover and grow to love. Columbus based artist Chelsea Burgin is such an artist. Apart from the fact she produces work in Columbus, the gang here at CITR know pretty much nothing, yet when this ignorance is set in parallel with her new track, Fall Weather, the lack of solid information seems little more than a frivolous attempt at some sort of explanation. The truth, with or without a story, is that the track is a real find. It loops on one central and dizzying loop, with the vocals spiraling into obsession, madness and sorrow.
With a whole wealth of work on her Soundcloud, she really could be an artist you become consumed by. - Crack In The Road

New Artist - Chelsea Burgin - Mad Man
Admittedly, female solo artists aren't exactly our strong point, barring Kyla La Grange and Claire Grimes Boucher. So naturally it came as a surprise to me, when I found myself enjoying the husky vocals and mellowed out vibes of Chelsea Burgin.
Chelsea is from Toledo, Ohio and now lives in Columbus. She creates some seriously sexy slow burners with aid of one of the most seductively husky voices I've heard in a long time. That's to put it simply, because she possesses a whole lot more than that.
"Mad Man" is her latest effort and although it won't be tearing roofs off anytime soon, Chelsea knows to stick with what she does best. She's got an effortless knack of creating the most delicate and smooth sounding tracks. They would probably relax even the most stressed of people, I would know.
Another stand out track of hers is "No Love", this time we get to see a bit more energy and a different side to Chelsea's craft. She can obviously hold her own on a variety of levels and personally, I think the fact that we have a track infused with guitars just goes to show there's a potential for progression.
Listen to the pair below and be sure to head on over to Soundcloud to check out her other work. We'll be sure to have one eye on this talented ladies next steps. - 1ForThePeople.com

You come to The Recommender to hunt out new music. Well, today’s gigantic post has our Top 40 Tracks Of 2011, so your hunting won’t get any easier than this. Think you’ve heard them all? Think again. Perhaps, if nothing else, hit play on the tracks you’ve never heard before? We’re confident that this list won’t only surprise you, but will equally reward you too.
To clarify, please note that the only criteria for a tune to earn an entry is to have either; A) been officially released this year as part of a single or album, or B) arrived into our music folder during 2011. All the tracks are in deliberate order with the number one track being our favourite.
We’re positive that you will agree, it’s been another fantastic year. This list could have easily been a top 100, but alas we’ve painstakingly narrowed it down to 40 after much deliberation. We caught up with the overall winner and they’ve kindly added their response to the accolade below.
18. Chelsea Burgin- Fall Weather
REVIEW: You’re in a hazy bar. A camera slowly and steadily zooms in to a beautiful woman seductively smoking her cigarette through a holder. She’s staring straight at you. You can’t move. This is classy, cinematic balladry at it’s most breathtaking.
- The Recommender
We are about to embark on The Recommender’s end of year lists. We plan our usual ‘Top 40 Tracks Of 2011', as well as our ‘Best Albums Of 2011' and our usual end-of-year summaries. Obviously every blog and website is at it, so there’s a danger of ‘list fatigue’ for the readers, as they scan one lengthy opinion after another, but they’re clearly not that put off as blogs typically see their traffic actually rise in December, as lists go viral and the Google and Hype Machine searches drive lots of results in their direction. Today we want to point out an artist that we actually discovered on one of these lists, proving that ultimately they’re not just a batch of self-indulgent blog posts, but often a bountiful resource. Credit to the fantastic music blog, Crack In The Road, a blog we frequent all year, as their version of the ‘Sound Of 2012‘ delivered Chelsea Burgin to our music folder. And what a find. Seriously.
We immediately got in touch with her, to find out more and the response was one of the most confusing biographies we’ve ever received! She detailed the history of a new five-piece band called Jackie & The Stabbs, who this week uploaded their new EP online. It turns out that she’s also their singer and had assumed that’s what we were enquiring about. The band are OK, but one thing is sure, the real talent is with Chelsea as a solo artist. Once we cleared up the coincidental mix up she sent us her own story. She started writing whilst studying at art college (she’s currently a freelance graphic designer, although we expect her career to shift once the attention of the record labels catch onto her extraordinary musical skills). She is originally from Toledo, Ohio but now living in Columbus, Ohio, where she’s enjoyed mixing with a batch of “creative people“. It’s obviously done her good, as she’s turned out dozens and dozens of demos (which can be located on her Soundcloud here), all of which are stripped-down, beautiful, melodic pop ballads. Her voice has a broken melancholy that’s perfectly suited to this style of song-writing, so emotive and personal that it stops you in your tracks. It’s music for midnight. It’s music for you at your most private and personal.
We’ve selected three highlights to show off to you below, taken from the lengthy list on offer, including a brand new one, Mad Man, which we had the privilege of hearing before anyone else. It’s one of her best, showing a solo artist that’s clearly developing her craft at every turn. Again it’s minimal and patient, with her signature husky vocals and a melody that picks you up and carries you throughout. It’s a trick she continues with No Love, but this time she introduces guitar riffs and beats where before there were none, filling the background and showing that she can still stand out whether backed by a band or standing alone. It’s with this track that her voice is found at it’s purest. If Lana Del Rey arrived without the irritating back story or the collagen-filled pout then these two would be a direct comparison. With a major label, an expensive video, an even more expensive production, who knows how big Chelsea could get. It just goes to show how useful hype, rather than song-craft, can be as the talent on show with Chelsea is arguably better. If there was any justice this is the star that would shine brightest.
Fall Weather is perhaps the best track available to date, although there are plenty of other contenders, as it comes in waves and echoes, providing a slightly different aesthetic to that of the other tracks. The smoke-filled melody pulses behind her and the empty-chamber vocals sound like the ghost of Dusty Springfield singing to you from another realm. This is the patient sound of an Autumnal leaf finally breaking away from it’s parent tree and drifting to the ground – virtually silent and weightless, but brittle and delicate. It’s full of cinematic imagery, like the soundtrack to a beautiful girl smoking seductively in a 1960s Roman Planski movie. This is without doubt one of The Recommender’s favourite artists that we’ve had the pleasure of stumbling upon this year, which really is saying something considering how many we plough through in a twelve month period. Just like her exceptional music this discovery has a special, personal and perfect atmosphere to it. Her music is perfectly designed to soundtrack your quieter moments, which should suggest that she’s commercially attractive, as we all have plenty of those don’t we. Time it right, perhaps during the months of Winter or Fall, make sure you’re on your own, slip on your headphones, close your eyes and let Chelsea Burgin serenade you. (MB) - The Recommder
Three bands rocked KOBO in Columbus in what was more or less a simply solid evening of indie rock n’ roll, one late Saturday night in February.
Sleep Fleet lived up to their growing reputation as solid band by simply jamming. With the exception of the colored Christmas lights that adorned the stage, Sleep Fleet are a no frills rock band. They simply play, and play well. No thrashing. No jumping. A little bit of mic stand shaking, maybe. But mostly straightforward jams. There’s something refreshing about seeing this every once in a while.
Jackie Stabb and her bandmates put on a sultry performance of engaging indie rock that would fit a jazz lounge just as well as a large rock hall. Stabb has been deemed a buzzworthy artist on blogs and in the Columbus scene without a formal release for a reason. She performed with confidence, a flawless voice, and she and her bandmates displayed both tight musicianship and fun camaraderie onstage. This was my second time experiencing one of her performances, and let me just say this time blew the first out of the water (which wasn’t so bad in and of itself). Pay attention, world!
Vanity Theft, a quartet (officially a trio) of gals put on an engaging performance of synth-laced rock into the early morning hours. They had a small fanbase in attendance, and front lady Alicia Grodecki knew precisely when to get in their face. Suffice to say the band’s fans ate it up. There isn’t much else to say other than these four girls know how to rock and gained some new followers and fans that night…including me. Can Paramore or Tegan and Sara take them out on tour, please?

Video: Jackie Stabb – Stabb Session #1/#2
Covering Broken Social Scene is never easy, unless of course you have the vocal talents of the beautiful Chelsea Burgin, in which case, it’s a piece of cake. In these sessions Chelsea aka Jackie Stabb takes on Broken Social Scene’s Sweetest Thing, as well as an original track titled Going Nowhere, which features alongside footage of a recent gig. As enticing and tantalizingly sensual as ever, it’s the perfect combination of a stunning image and equally as appealing music. - Crack In The Road
Jackie Stabb Expanding Her Fanbase… Beyond Columbus
We recently had the opportunity to see Jackie Stabb at Skully’s and as always she was impressive. With a confident bravado onstage and a voice to back it up, its obvious that she has her sights set beyond the Columbus market. And from our observations she has a damn good chance, just check out the first of her many upcoming “Stabb Sessions” as she covers Broken Social Scene:
Whether or not she becomes the next big thing is beyond our control, but odds are definitely in her favor. There is an album in the works and from what we’ve heard its garnering some much deserved attention. If you have a chance we highly recommend checking out Jackie Stabb at one of her upcoming shows at Kobo Live:
1/26 with Chelsea Automatic and The George Elliot Underground
2/2 with Vanity Theft and Sleep Fleet
And if that’s not enough, there’s a good chance she’ll be making an appearance at SXSW… maybe at one of our showcases. - RethinkPopMusic
After performing with a namesake group dubbed Jackie and the Stabbs, the Victorian Village singer cut the players loose to front a new group.
“But it’s kind of a solo project,” said the 25-year-old, who, since last year, has relied on the Columbus indie trio In Silent Movies to round out her ensemble. “It gets difficult. It’s pushing me to be a little more vocal, to tell people exactly what my vision is.”
With a delicate voice that recalls the frontwomen of Broken Social Scene and Of Monsters and Men, Stabb’s music has shifted — which the artist said is for the best.
“It just kind of clicked,” she said, “to be what I wanted the whole time.”
Q: I’m guessing that Jackie Stabb isn’t your birth name?
A: That’s actually my grandma’s name, this alter ego for me. She thinks it’s the coolest thing ever. I’m playing my first show in front of her. She’s the nicest person, like a cartoon character — just so funny.
?
Q: How would you describe your music?
A: A dreamy indie-pop sound. There’s definitely a different tone. The last project was more throwbacky, kind of had more of a beachy tone. This is a dreamy, melodic sound.
?
Q: What is your musical background?
A: I did a little bit of theater. I went to graphic-design school, and I lived by myself in Dayton. Instead of doing my design work, I was figuring out GarageBand software and recording music.
For some reason, I kept putting stuff out online and was getting a great reception. It just kind of turned into more of an attainable dream than I had imagined.
?
Q: How does your creative process work?
A: I am the key songwriter. I usually come to (the band) with a version of the song — me poorly playing the guitar: “This is what I want .” They try and transcribe that idea.
?Q: Are you in the studio right now?
A: I’m planning on hopefully having an EP out by the summer, to have something we can give to people to promote ourselves.
We just played a show at the the Comet in Cincinnati. People said, “Where is your album?” — so that’s at the top of our to-do list.
?
Q: Who inspires you?
A: I have a million Billie Holiday records. I love Etta James and Bob Dylan.
I would listen to a lot of Exitmusic or mr. Gnome or Chelsea Wolfe. I really like artists that are kind of experimental with their sounds but there’s that vulnerable and kind of personal voice at the forefront.
