Bio
In Lieu Of is an eclectic, alternative band that consisted of Shaharoh (vocals, piano and lyrics) and Brian Chism. The line-up has grown to include Brian Farst (guitar), Benji Bendrix (bass) and David Howard (drums) as Brian Chism has remained co-producer of the songs.
Born and raised in Oakland County, Michigan, Brian Chism started playing piano at the age of 5. By the time he was thirteen, he added guitar and bass to his repertoire. Brian relocated to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music and attended the Musician's Institute to further his knowledge of music. Shortly after, he met Shaharoh who also had a passion for music and a vast musical background. They quickly discovered their mutual admiration for artists such as: Jim Croce, Fiona Apple, The Mars Volta, A Perfect Circle, Incubus and more.
Born in Illinios and raised in San Diego, California, Shaharoh has been playing piano and singing since the age of three. She also studied alto saxophone for six years at a performing arts school. An avid writer and poet, she moved to Los Angeles to attend UCLA where she earned an English degree ultimately taking her writing to the next level.
At first they started working together as a side-project their own solo careers. Shaharoh was drawn to Brian's intricate and melodic guitar riffs while Brian found Shaharoh's melodies and laden lyrics the perfect match for his songs. The two began writing and generated a unique and captivating sound.
After being asked to perform at a few different venues around Los Angeles, they decided to combine forces in order to create a dynamic duo, thus In Lieu Of was born. Brian Farst and Kevin Costigan, far from newbies to the LA music scene, joined to enhance their live sound. They are currently working on a full-length album due for release in Summer 2012.
Previous shows include Dragonfly, The Viper Room, On the Rox, The Gig, 14 Below, Cranes, The Mint, Fais Do Do, The Joint and San Diego Indie Fest 6 and 7.
