Stouffville, Markham players developing Toronto following
Mike Warne and Graziano Volpe have lugged their guitars from Whitchurch-Stouffville to the Big Smoke with one thought in mind. They want to create memorable music with strong catchy rhythms.
Add Mike's raw honest vocals and that's just what they're doing.
Their indie band, The Shallow Alps, has developed a following through playing venues in Toronto in recent months.
They'll be performing at one of Toronto's oldest rock music venues, the El Mocambo, Thursday, Feb. 12. Doors open at 9 p.m. They've also been signed up for the North by Northeast music festival this summer, with 500 bands from across North America performing in 50 clubs throughout the city June 17 to 21.
The two young musicians, Mike is 23; Graziano is 22, honed their skills during their years at Stouffville District Secondary School. Mike performed frequently in the city during that time.
Mike's musical roots go back to classic rock, particularly the Beatles.
Graziano was nurtured on classic rock as well, later branching out to blues and jazz-influenced artists include Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Joe Pass. Later, both were drawn to groups such as The Strokes and Radiohead.
The other band members are 21-year-old bass player Elliott Altilia, and drummer Scott Jackson, 25, who hails from Markham. Elliott has played for a variety of bands in the city and has a strong blues influence.
Scott is a very experienced drummer who has gigged around the city.
With studies in music business management from Durham College under his belt, Mike is ready to take his band one step further . That includes a recording session in March and performing in other southern Ontario locations.
While aiming to keep their music "catchy and simple", he said, "we want to make sure everyone in the band is doing something different rather than everyone playing the same chords."
Painstaking practice and attention to detail underpin their music.
"We want every part to sound as awesome and as 'hooky' as it can be," Mr. Volpe said.
The band's followers have described the Shallow Alps' music as "different, original and moving".

Bio
Hi, We're "In English". We have just finished recording our first 5 song ep. We recorded it with a wonderful human being named Mike Langford at The Pawnshop Studio in Kensington Market. Mike has worked with great artists like Sloan and Hawksley Workman and we had a blast working with him. This ep will be included on the 2009 North By Northeast Top 60 Tip Sheet, which will be distributed to nearly 300 radio stations across Canada.
Prior to this recording we were operating under the name "Shallow Alps". We recorded a 3 song demo with TIm Oxford of the Arkells at Roxford Sound in Newmarket. The demo was well received on campus and community radio, climbing as high as 2 on CIUT's weekly charts, we also managed to crack Earshot's National Top 50.
That’s what we’re up to now. Here’s a bit of the back story and some information about the members.
"In English" was formed over the summer of 2008. The founding members being Mike Warne and Elliott Altilia. As time passed members changed, recordings were made and shows were played, all under various names. Now in 2009 there is a solid line up of full-time band members.
In English is:
Mike Warne - Guitarist, vocalist and champion of justice. Mike hopes one day to be bitten by a radioactive spider and possess all of the powers and abilities of Spider-Man, and also have wolverine claws and laser eyes.
Elliott Altilia - Bassist and sword wielding Kendo bad ass. Elliott is a proud member of the Canadian Kendo Federation, he is also known for popping his right shoulder out of place like Sergeant Martin Riggs in the Lethal Weapon movies.
Andrew Haust - Drummer and winner of the "Nicest Beard in the Band Award" for 6 consecutive months! For more on Andrew please refer to:

Ryan McKinley - Guitarist and fresh faced new comer to the band. Ryan enjoys the television show Reading Rainbow. And that's all he enjoys.
