Hustle Roses has been playing a string of shows at Ham & Eggs Tavern over the past few months and because her shows did so well, she was asked by the band Kissing Cousins to open for them at The Satellite last night. Hustle Roses performed a few of her greatest hits and also played new stuff from her upcoming new EP battleplanning. which will be released in early 2015. Her performance last night was quite excellent. After a string of great shows, last night’s performance was her best yet.
I took a bunch of photos but because Hustle Roses and Amelia danced around so much it was hard to get a clear, non-blurry shot. They were so great, here is video of Alive:
I’m really hoping 2015 will bring many more great Hustle Roses shows. More people need to see how great she is :D With a new EP on the way, 2015 should be a great year for my girl Hustle Roses. - pink is the new blog
When Ollie Stone found herself with plenty of spare time after her band, The Oohlas, went on a hiatus, she filled it the only way she knew how: with music. For the past three years the Los Angeles-based musician penned her own songs, locking herself in her room and recording on GarageBand. "I never really dreamed I'd be solo—as a little girl I always dreamed of being in a rock'n'roll band—but I found working by myself extra-challenging," says Stone. The fruits of her labor are Hustle Roses, her solo venture, and Tequila Mockingbird, her debut EP (and the best named album, ever?).
The music, which she describes as, "loud, bouncy, fun, optimistic—I wanted to make a more poppy, Depeche Mode thing," also has traces of `80s-era Madonna. No surprise, considering Billy Steinberg, co-writer of "Like a Virgin," is one of the many people Stone collaborated with on the EP. The songs didn't start out that way: "I was pretty sad at the time [Hustle Roses began] because the Oohlas were my family, they completely took care of me and were like the brothers I never had. So I would write these songs alone—a few of them were developed into songs that will come out one day, but a lot of the initial songs were sad, lonely," Stone says. "Overall, it's not really my style to be a bummer!"
Indeed, Stone named her one-woman project after what she views as a particularly uplifting line in her favorite Charles Bukowski poem, "The Consummation of Grief": "I was born for this, I was born to hustle roses down the avenues of the dead".
"Along with the whole poem, I just interpret it as he seeks beauty no matter how fucking horrible the world is; to fight for beauty. I was like, `Fuck, that really says it all to me. That's how I feel.' I'm always trying to make things positive and beautiful, and hustle for good—or bad."
Besides her EP, which just came out, Stone has another reason to smile: A few of her songs are going to be used to soundtrack Christian Siriano's upcoming runway show. "I'd like to reach the whole world," Stone says with an infectious giggle, before adding, "I was born to make people laugh and be happy!" - Elle
My good friend and AMAZING musician Hustle Roses provided some of the music for Christian Siriano‘s Autumn/Winter 2012 Collection at New York Fashion Week last February. Last night, she provided some of the music from this week’s episode of Gossip Girl. During a very important party scene, Hustle Roses‘s Alive could be heard in the background … and then got pumped up to the forefront once the action really got … interesting. Click below to check out video of Hustle Roses‘s debut on Gossip Girl last night.
OMG … I can’t even tell you how excited I was to hear Alive on GG last night. It was used so perfectly! At first, I was really annoyed that the characters were talking over the track … but the music kept playing to crescendo and then BAM! Center stage:
It is no small feat getting one of your songs on a show like Gossip Girl. I am so proud of my girl. Her music is just so fun … I hope that this exposure lets more people enjoy her talent. The more exposure she gets, the better the chances that we will get to hear MORE new music. Woot!!! - Pink Is The New Blog

hi, i'm hustle roses. i'm from the sonoran desert. it was too hot there, so i moved to los angeles. i started a band called the oohlas with my friends greg and mark eklund and we wrote and toured many songs together. when we took a break, i tried to write songs on my own, like any good gal should do. during this time i explored writing with many many different people. eventually i came upon my first ep, tequila mockingbird, produced by tim anderson and joakim 氓hlund. i then released a mixtape a few months later called 'bitters' that i wrote with jesse owen astin. i produced a song myself, and that gave me what i needed to try to produce my own thing. after working the last year and a half recording at cueva melocot贸n in downtown, los angeles, i produced my 2nd EP, battleplanning. i completed it with some assistance from james r. brown at his studio in pound ridge, new york. its about staying on your game despite the crushing reality that breakups are going to happen. i hope to tour the earth and tell this story. see you soon.
