"SONGDOOR GRAND PRIZE WINNER 2014"

GRAND AWARD:

HUDSON HENRY

California, USA

Hard Rock/Alt-Rock Category: "Addicted”

ABOUT THE WINNER, HUDSON HENRY

Hudson Henry is a 23-year old solo artist from Los Angeles, California. He is a multi-instrumentalist who plays, arranges and writes everything on his songs.

Currently working on his upcoming 2015 EP, he has been compared to artists such as The Script, One Republic and Ed Sheeran. While much of his music falls into the pop/rock genre, it is clear Hudson is creating his own place in the music world with his versatile songwriting ability.

Says Hudson: "it's a true honor and privilege to be picked as the winner of such an amazing competition. I feel like the endless hours of work and struggle are finally paying off. It means so much to me, from the bottom of my heart. A couple years ago I didn't even think I'd get the chance to play a guitar again after having a serious heart virus."

The virus to which Hudson refers is called acute pericarditis, an inflammation of the sac surrounding the heart. The accumulation of fluid puts pressure on the heart, which causes an immense amount of pain.

"At one point a priest came into my room and read me my last rites on the hospital bed. I honestly thought I had lived my life and accepted death at 21. While recovering from the aftermath of the virus, I wrote and wrote for hours. My album "New Eyes," which includes the song "Addicted," was birthed from the writing I did during my recovery."

"I am Entertainment Magazine Review of new single "We Will Find A Way.""

Location: Los Angeles, CA
Genre: Alternative / Pop-Rock

Hudson Henry just found a way to impress me with his new single, We Will Find A Way.
The LA based artist combines great vocals, great music, great songwriting, and melody
composition to create as single that is hopefully the prelude to what will be an amazing
album release sometime in the near future. If I had to make a comparison, I would say
Hudson's new single is a combination of Coldplay and Imagine Dragons; very
commercially viable and catchy.

From the outset, this song will grab your attention with a single note organ on a constant
pitch bend, coupled with an awesome closed string electric guitar strum that has a sort of
wild west feel. As we get further into the introduction to the song, we're hit with a huge
stadium kick filled with verb to set the mood for Hudson's lead vocal. As the power of the
record consumes your eardrums you find yourself not only singing along, but within the
first 90 seconds you're completely enveloped by how big the sound is.

We Will Find A Way is a very solid single release that showcases both Hudson's
musicianship and vocal talents. There aren't a lot of indie artists like Hudson Henry; the
kinds of artists who can blow you away with every aspect of their music. Most indie artists
either have the vocals but not the music, the songwriting but not the vocals, or the music
and nothing else; but, that's not the case for Hudson Henry. I'd absolutely recommend
people check this guy out and be sure to connect with him online at:

Skope: Any plans for any holiday music from either Halloween or Christmas?
Yes, I am currently touring on the East Coast. Halloween will be pretty relaxed this year, just hanging with friends and family. I will be playing a large Christmas show acoustically in New York. I am also playing acoustic shows in the New York area through December. Most of the fans I have are in the UK, so it’s great to get exposure in places I’ve never really played before. I have been getting a very positive response from the crowd on the East Coast, very warm people. The venues in New York are incredible and the venue owners are extremely professional.

Skope: Looking back on 2013 what are you most proud of and any goals for 2014?
I am most proud of releasing our music video for my single “Falling Down.” The video was shot by John Kenney and Travers Jacobs in Malibu California. The track falling down expresses my personal towards the LA mentality I grew up around. I have a ton of goals in 2014, which includes getting on a huge tour, releasing a new single, shooting a new music video, and releasing a new follow up album. I am extremely excited to play festivals in Europe. It had been a dream of mine ever since I was in a band.

Skope: What are you currently promoting the most via an album, tour, single etc?
I am currently promoting the single “Addicted,” which is from the album “New Eyes.” We just finished shooting the music video in Los Angeles with Director “Ryan Reeb,” from Simon West’s company. After I finish promoting the last album I will be switching gears into writing mode for the next album. I want to create a much different sound from the last album and break away from any writing barriers I’ve had before. The new single I am working on has a completely different sound, and I think the fans will love it. I truly believe the song is better lyrically and melodically. It’s honestly a song I can hear blasting in clubs.

Skope: Besides music, do you also have school/work/family and how do you balance?
I actually cage fight and am starting to produce other bands on the east and west coast. Most of my work and time is dedicated to music. I am always eager to work with new artists and co write. It’s always tough balancing a normal life and art no matter who you are. Music is a craft and any craft requires a large amount of time and dedication.

Skope: Do you have any new Youtube video or Soundcloud single posted online we should hear?
I have several YouTube videos pleated including the lyric video for “Addicted,” and a music video for the single “Falling Down.” All of my tracks are streaming for free on YouTube and Soundcloud, so feel free to check them all out! I have split tracks I’ve done with other artists posted on my soundcloud account as well as singles from the album “New Eyes.”

Skope: What is coming up for you & where you at online?
I am releasing a new music video for the single “Addicted,” and in the process of setting up a large tour. I have a new single in the works right now and hope to release it in the beginning of 2014. 2014 will consist of writing and touring for the new album. This could be the year I actually break through, because if large risks I will be taking musically and in life. Here are some of the websites where you can find my music streaming for free!

"Hudson Henry's See's A New Light with his New Eyes"

Hudson Henry's See's A New Light with his New Eyes

Hudson Henry is a Pop/Rock solo artist from Los Angeles California. Hudson began his music career as a drummer for numerous bands in the Los Angeles area before transitioning into a metal singer for bands in the East coast area. After being immersed in the hard rock/metal scene he decided to become a solo artist. Hudson has just finished recording his new full-length record titled "New Eyes.” The album "New Eyes" is about his near death experience due to a heart virus within the last year. As the priest read him his last rights in the hospital, he decided that he had his eyes set on chasing his dream. This new distinctive sound has a heavy electronic influence and integrates elements of pop, hard rock, industrial, and dubstep. So with that Hudson himself talks about his new album and his changes with making music.

1. You were a drummer as well as involved within the rock/metal scene for a while, then decided to fly solo as a pop/rock act, why the genre change and wanting to be a solo act as compared to a full on band? What was it about drumming that drew you into that direction? Are you still a drummer or prefer the guitar and vocals better?

Hudson: I started my music career as a drummer, but it was honestly never enough for me. I felt limited in the songwriting side of music. Drumming was an easy way for me to understand and analyze song form in every genre. From an early age I would listen to Blink-182 records and try to copy the style of Travis Barker and other drum idols of mine. The metal scene was an amazing experience, but I couldn't take it after a while. Every show was a broken bone, a split lip, or a stitch. It was essential to come from a metal background because the genre is technically demanding. Transitioning into the world of pop has been an eye opening and life changing experience in so many ways. I feel as though there are less limitations in the pop world.

2. Why the name Hudson Henry is that your real name or your stage name and does it mean anything?

Hudson: Yes it is a stage name. Hudson is my first name, and Henry is my middle name.

3. How do you describe your music to people?

Hudson: I describe it as electronic rock, but then again the music is constantly evolving. I truly believe that it's extremely important to not set any sort of genre limitations or labels to your music. So the next album will be labeled as something different, which is fine by me. My goal is to keep people guessing and to catch them off guard.

4. What image do you think your music conveys?

Hudson: It's honestly hard to say, because I love and respect every genre of music. I am a firm believer in not creating boundaries when you are in a creative environment. I think we have a pop look at some shows and others we have a harder rock vibe. Our fans range from pop kids, metal heads, to

5. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)

Hudson: Each song conveys its own individual message. The song "Rope and Wire" is about the ropes and wires that bind people to lives they hate, and need to break out. There is a song called "United," which is simply about the beauty in traveling around the world and how priceless experiences affect our lives.

6. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)

Hudson: Yes I write all of my own music, lyrics, and play all of the instruments on the record. I usually start my writing process with guitar and vocals. As soon as I have my song form formatted out on guitar, I will add drum parts to each sections. And once the song form has been structured its time to write lyrics and vocal melodies. Songwriting in an art of trial and error, but once in a while a song comes out effortlessly.

7. Who are your musical influences?

Hudson: My musical influences range from bands such as One Republic to Killswitch Engage. I honestly love all styles of music, and think its important to have an open mind when listening. I personally believe that a good song is a good song despite the genre. My favorite frontman of all time is Mike Patton from Faith No More.

8. Your album "New Eyes" is about your near death experience due to a heart virus - what type of heart virus was this? What was it like having this near death experience? How much has it changed you?

Hudson: I had acute pericarditis. Its when the sac surrounding the heart gets inflamed and puts pressure on the heart. A near death experience was a wake up call and also a chance for change. It gave me a chance to analyze certain spectacular of myself artistically. My songwriting benefited from this experience immensely.

9. Why did you want to call this album "New Eyes"? What does that represent?

Hudson: Before I had started the writing and recording process of this record I had almost - Natalie's world

"New Artist Review: Hudson Henry"

NEW ARTIST REVIEW

HUDSON HENRY

On August 25th, at Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, something amazing happened. Though I was there to see another band, I got the rarest of treats. The opening band that night was Hudson Henry and it marked the first time I’ve ever felt the opening act should be the headliner!

Hudson Henry is not just a band, but the man. Hudson is a Los Angeles local who played the NY Metal scene for a few years, and has just returned. He’s a singer/song writer with a strong sense of precisely how he wants the finished product to sound, he’s a musically diverse and accomplished musician who is responsible for all the music on his album “New Eyes”. I haven’t heard an entire album of songs I love in many years. “New Eyes” is one of those albums. The title song, as well as the second song on the album “Back to Life”, are both born of an awakening experience Hudson had as the result of a heart virus. The illness came agonizingly close to killing him. As a result, he’s dedicated himself to his music.

At Borderline, Hudson shared the stage with the band he formed in 2011 which comprises of himself; Hudson Henry on vocals, Conor Collins an eminently impressive guitarist, Curtis Hart doing an excellent job on drums, and Christian Boothby keeping things tied together with a strong bass line. From the first song they played, they had everyone’s attention, and kept it throughout their set.

I have listened to little else in the past couple of weeks since their show and from the heart have never wanted to recommend an album more. “New Eyes” has the polished sound few new artists have. I personally recommend “This Moment” because it’s just a great rock song, “Falling Down” because it has a unique sound incorporating subtle dub elements, and for those who like a softer ballad sound, check out “Silver and Gold”, which is a simply beautiful song. The whole album is beyond worthy.

"Hudson Henry Featured on "ZOT Zin Music""

I love my students, simply because they make it possible for me to do the one thing I love more than anything else: “Teaching Music”

Without my students, there would be no teaching music for me.

All that being said:

It occurred to me that one thing I don’t do often enough in my blogs, is featuring my students.

My blogs talk about the art of music teaching, about music, about guitar education, about the mind, psychology, music theory, guitar, and anything covered in guitar lessons, but not enough about the most important part of teaching: THE PEOPLE!!!

This is interesting, considering that there is probably nothing I enjoy more than putting people I love and work with, into the spotlight.

So here’s the first one in a series of regular ZOT Zin Music student profiles.

World… meet one of my guitar students!
I am very proud him and what he is accomplishing, and he has become a very good friend in past year since he became one of my music student:

Meet…
Hudson Henry.

What better way to introduce the man, than through his music.

Hudson’s most important musical influences are: Muse, Nine Inch Nails, Faith No More, One Republic, 30 Seconds To Mars, Alexisonfire, and Finch.

“Addicted” is the first single of his album that came out earlier this year.
You can hear some of those influences integrated in the song.

I wanted to feature Hudson’s song “Addicted” first, because that is literally what I am.

I am “Addicted” to listening to this great song.
I have often had it on repeat since I first heard the song.

Addicted

When I asked him, Hudson shared that he is currently listening a lot to the new Nine Inch Nails Album “Hesitation Marks”.
He also has “30 Seconds to Mars” new album “Love, Lust, Faith, And Dreams” on repeat.

Another new band that has taken him by surprise is an Australian band by the name “Twelve Foot Ninja.”
He has also been listening to a ton of electronic music lately.

Hudson is currently working on new tracks for his next album as well as tracks for some other artists he is writing with.
He’s working on a split track with rapper “Wann” which should be released within the next couple months.

Hudson and his band are also working on a new music video with Simon West’s company for his song “Addicted”. (The song you heard in the above video)
Hudson says following about his guitar lessons.

I started taking lessons with Vreny over a year ago.
In that amount of time I have improved not only as a guitarist but also as an overall songwriter.

My musical pallet has grown vastly from his unique teaching techniques.
He has also opened my eyes to a different side of chord shapes.

Working with Vreny has been one of the most amazing experiences in my entire life.
He is not only an amazing musician but possesses an ocean of wisdom.

He has become a great friend and ally in the musical world, and I’m planning on working with him on tracks for his new solo album that is currently in the works.

After working with Vreny for a short amount of time I started to notice my songwriting taking a lead musically.
When I would sit down to write a song before I struggled with chords and lead lines.

Hudson is currently recording drum parts to some songs I am producing.
He’s an ace drummer, who studied drums at Berklee College of Music. You can hear his drumming on his album (and in the music videos featured here).

Here’s Hud’s latest music video.

“Falling Down”

Hudson Released His Debut Album “New Eyes”.

Earlier this year, Hudson released his debut album “New Eyes”
Up till first hearing this album upon its release, I had never really heard any of Hudson’s music.

I was floored when I heard the album.

The production, the performances, the songwriting, the energy, the grooves, melodies: EVERYTHING on that album is great!

One thing you hear all the time from your students: “I swear to god, I am really much better and can play much better than you hear me do here in the lessons Vreny!”

You never play your best at your guitar lessons. Your teacher is always your toughest audience.
Every music teacher knows that, because they all once were students themselves.
A student is not supposed to sound great in a lesson: because that would mean the teacher is not challenging the student enough.

Not challenging a student enough with new material in a music lesson, is the same like wasting that student’s time, money and talent.

A lesson is also not a place where the student “shows” what he can do. It is a place where he gets exposed to all the things he can NOT pull off yet.

The great thing about that: is that you always get pleasantly surprised when one of your students gives you their album, and you can hear what they are working on and what they are really capable off.

It was no different when I heard Hudson’s album “New Eyes”. It’s totally amazing.

Exclusive Interview

Tell us about where you are from and how you got to this position today.
I am a twenty-one pop/rock solo artist from Los Angeles California. I began my music career as a drummer for various bands in the Los Angeles area before transitioning into a metal singer for bands in the East coast area. After being immersed in the hard rock/metal scene I decided to become a solo artist.

I just recently finished recording a new full-length record titled New Eyes. The album New Eyes is about my near death experience due to a heart virus I had within the last year. As the priest read me my last rights in the hospital I decided that I had my eyes set on chasing my dream. The instruments I play on the record include drums, guitar, bass, piano, and vocals.

What do you have coming up? What are some of the new projects we can expect to see?
I am currently working on a new single for our next record and a music video for our last single Addicted. I am completing a new split track with a rapper titled Take The Ride, which should be released at the end of the month. I have also just recently finished a split track with a female vocalist titled California Ghost. I am also doing guest vocals for Rob The Cartel as a singer/screamer titled Behind the Gun, which should be released in August. Three artists will be coming into my studio to record their records which I will produce and co-write at the end of the year.

Tell us more about the current song you are promoting to everyone.
We are currently promoting the song called Falling Down. This song is about the corruption and shallowness of Los Angles. I am huge Hunter S. Thompson fan, so I wrote the song in the mindset of a crazy dark individual trying to make it in LA. This song in particular is a personal vendetta against the shallow industry.

This song reflects my personal view of Hollywood as a young individual of our generation drowning in the swarm of vermin. I was in the state of recovering from my heart virus on countless doses of medication. I was on beta-blockers and heavy doses of ibuprofen reading Hunter S. Thompson and writing constantly.

This song is a statement made against the blood that pumps the Hollywood machine. The lyrics in the song directly reflect the personal struggle of an outcast trying to break into the scene. Falling Down has a distinctive sound. There are elements of electronic music and integrates elements of pop, hard rock, industrial, and dubstep. We have recently released a new music video that was filmed and directed by John Kenney and Travers Jacobs.

How does your music separate yourself from other artists and bands out there?
Not only are we hitting a different sound, but also have statement to make with our music. In this flawed generation that seems to be imploding on itself it needs a wake up call. We intend on being the alarmist in a world that’s been asleep for too long. Our live performances vary from show to show.

In our full band performances we have a distinct style consisting of suits, ties, and impenetrable energy. Our stripped down acoustic shows have a heavy electronic sound that we fuse with a raw acoustic sound. We are constantly trying to introduce new electronic elements into our live performances. We treat our music studio as a laboratory and we are the mad scientists that constantly push the boundaries of our live performances.

Tell us about one of the hardest challenges you had to face in the industry?
I would have to say carrying the weight of being songwriter, promoter, and performer. In this day in age you have to think of yourself as an artist and a label. Social media sites are so splintered it’s very difficult to correctly utilize them. There is no “correct formula” anymore. You have to think of your band as a business and yourself as an entrepreneur. The important thing is to be one step ahead of everyone else, which can be aggravating at times.

We can’t shy away from the fact that we are a generation of consumers. We consume, judge, and recycle before we even analyze. This is the constant struggle of the independent musician. The real money comes from publishing, merchandise, and touring. The uphill battle is finding the method that works for your band.

What was one of the biggest set backs in your career and how did you bounce back?
I had contracted a fatal heart virus that had thrown me off course. Recovering was the largest set back for me. The virus I had is known as acute pericarditis. I was in the middle of touring and writing when I had contracted the virus. I had a very slim chance to live and I accepted the fact that no one could save me.

I was in the ICU struggling to survive and the only thing I could think about was my music. I was physically unable to perform or move much for a while. The only choice I had was to start writing for the new record that I had my eyes set on. I was armed with a ton of new ideas and concepts that came along with the t - Warped Magazine

After being immersed in the hard rock/metal scene he decided to become a singer/songwriter. Hudson has released an EP consisting of six original songs, which exhibit a variety of styles. The aggressive influence of metal always carries over into the lighter pop element in the music. Hudson Has just finished a 10 song Album which will be released in the next month titles "New Eyes." He sings and plays ALL of the instruments on his album." - Round Magazine

Hudson Henry EP

You’ve heard a lot of musicians, specifically Acoustic musicians in your lifetime. They show up at coffee houses with their hollow body guitars and average songs hoping that the noise of the crowd doesn’t drown out their set. As you sit and watch yet another individual who should have been an accountant instead of a singer you start to wonder if someone who will grace the stage with something fresh, new and exciting. Enter Hudson Henry.

Hudson Henry is that guy, seriously. He has a great look, a solid musical foundation and most importantly a distinct voice that will keep the ladies longing for more. He’s a one man band; he writes plays and arranges all of the instruments played on each track. His new EP, the “Hudson Henry EP” is a solid six song piece filled with stories of love gained and love lost. Henry’s lead track “Break My Fall” is a mid-tempo power ballad that will draw listeners to it like moths to a flickering flame. The song’s melody, instrumentation and vocal performance unite and give you, the listener, a soothing, sensual listening experience. Perhaps the best and most intriguing track on the EP is “We Will Rise”. This emotionally dramatic inspirational song calls us all to action; to take charge and own our destiny. Henry’s percussion performance is outstanding. His fluid piano keystrokes rise and combine with hard-hitting percussion; ending the song in a powerful and lasting way.

The Hudson Henry EP is a powerful six track EP which contains a slew of potential Acoustic hits. While the conceptual depth of the EP isn’t vast (seriously, how many different ways can you make a song about getting your feelings hurt?), Hudson’s unique voice is pleasantly new and interesting. This skilled Los Angeles based singer/songwriter is set to carve his was into the top of many musical charts with his energetic Acoustic/Rock sound.

"Hudson Henry's Newest song "We Will Find A Way" Featured on Liam Hemsworth's New Promo Video For "Legend Magazine""

He’s the latest in a line of hardworking actors blessed with rugged miens who have left Australia for the gleaming lights of Hollywood and struck gold. Back home he followed a tried-and-tested route for aspiring actors, signing on for brief spells in long-running soap operas Home and Away and Neighbours. Chris, the middle Hemsworth and Thor actor, Heath Ledger and Guy Pearce each used the same vehicles to launch their careers.

Liam swung into Hollywood after scoring a casting call from Chris’ agent for Thor. He obviously lost the part but won fans in the industry, eventually landing a breakout role in The Last Song. The movie was released in 2010 and his career was on the rise.

With his 190-cm frame, baby blues and boyish looks, he could’ve moonlighted as a Hollywood heartbreaker, dating, dining and Instagramming through the rest of his career. Instead, Liam kept on working, becoming a household name with a lead role in The Hunger Games franchise, starring as Jennifer Lawrence’s on-screen love interest. Next up, it’s the reboot of Independence Day.

There’s no room for swollen egos in Liam’s life; he’s got two big brothers to keep him in check. And, as our exclusive with Liam and Luke shows, they remain unaffected and unpretentious. - Legend Magazine
