"Southern Songwriters to perform at the supper club"

Although he isn’t a singer, Kevin Clements has been playing music for almost 40 years. The Monroeville, Ala., native is a songwriter who has written country music since he was 16.

Clements has performed at songwriter’s festivals for years and recently had the idea to host one in Auburn. Clements’ wife is a first cousin of Supper Club owner John Brandt and the two of them thought the Supper Club would be the perfect venue.

“It’s a good venue,” Clements said of Supper Club.

Brandt held a Songwriter’s Festival last year and although he didn’t have one planned for this year he told Clements that if they’d plan it he’d host it.

Clements contacted songwriters from around the area he had performed festivals with or that he admired and booked the festival. More than 10 songwriters will take the stage at Supper Club this weekend. A few of the songwriters include, Rick Carter, Davis Raines, Mark Robinson, John Byrd, Pamela Jackson, Katherine Kimbrough and Hope Cassity.

One of the songwriters booked for the show, Cassity, has been playing music since she was a kid. She began singing as festivals when she was 7and even performed on “Star Search.” She began writing her own music in high school and picked up a guitar to acompany her lyrics.

The Monroeville, Ala., native moved to Texas where she made a name for herself playing local coffee shops and wineries and was picked up by a national tour and then nominated for a “Best Female Vocalist” award.

A little over a year ago, Cassity decided to follow her dream to Nashville. Within three months she was signed by a publishing company to pitch her songs. Although while in Nashville she writes more than she performs, Cassity said she’s a performer at heart.

“I’m a performer at heart and I’m a songwriter by birth,” she said. “I really love to storytell. I love it all. If it has to do with music it love it.”

Songwriter Davis Raines grew up in rural Alabama. After high school he took a job as a prison guard overseeing death row. The stories from the prison made their way into his music.

“Those songs about dark behaviors and sins appealed to me because they make the most compelling stories,” Raines said.

Raines also followed his music dreams to Nashville in the mid-’90s and has released several albums since and has had his music recorded by well-known musicians that include Tillis and Kenny Rogers.

The War Eagle Supper Club Songwriter’s Festival will take place this Sunday, Nov. 7. Music will start around 3:30 p.m. and will last until around 10 p.m. Cover is $5. - THE CORNER NEWS
