The grown-up farm kids who constitute Hill and Vale all come from the same Iowa town of 500 people. All still work on their family farms. And despite the demands and geographic isolation wrought by that way of life, they remain compelled to create.
The results strike their own balance between ambient rock, progressive and post-hardcore, while cultivating the kind of sincerity born from living close to the land.
Their second release, Urim/Thummim, is out now. The concept double-EP is a riffy reinvention of their established sound: melodic sentimentality backed by a dynamic depth that is difficult to imagine coming from a three-piece.
