"Help Hell & Lula's Cool Bus Run On Veggie Oil (2.6.12)"

Electro-pop Band Looks To Set Environmental Friendly Example

Hell&Lula, the commanding electro-dance group from Los Angeles, is doing a PledgeMusic Campaign, with goal of the campaign is to raise enough money to modify their "Cool Bus" (a converted school bus) so that it can run on waste vegetable oil from restaurants instead of diesel fuel. PledgeMusic is an online platform that allows fans to fund creative projects.

This enthusiastic quartet sports an unparalleled package of energy and musicianship. Their compelling live shows and current EP, Catch Up!!! Catch Up!!! will make a fan of anyone. Hell&Lula's motto is simple: "We want to make you dance, we want to make you think and we want to make you think about dancing." The band is comprised of MAK (vocals/dance moves), Devon Culiner (guitar/programming), Russell Henson (bass/synth) and Alex Vega (drums). In addition to being influential in a musical way, Hell&Lula is influential in a social way. Adding to their most recent plan of converting their bus to be more eco-friendly, they have also developed a Recycled Merchandise Program, and have helped spread the message of their friends at Falling Whistles, a non-profit organization dedicated to spreading the word about war in the Congo and vying for its peace. In addition, the band recently signed with the new MTV/Extreme Music Partnership, HYPE Music.

The recently launched PledgeMusic campaign features a unique array of incentives by Hell&Lula, such as an advanced order of their upcoming EP, autographed guitars, hand crafted items made by members of the band, a VIP night in the Cool Bus and many more! Hell&Lula also promises to donate 20% of the proceeds after reaching their target to Falling Whistles. Your donation will help reduce the band's fuel costs by 90%. Furthermore, the donation will help make the bus more environmentally sustainable. Help catalyze the COOL BUS' hipness by making it veggie ready! Remember, you are not just helping the band; you are helping a noble cause as well because "Green is Thexy"!

Hell & Lula captivated on stage last night at Club Moscow in Hollywood with a sound all their own.

With a stage presence packed full of dynamic explosion Michael Alan, lead singer of Hell & Lula, tests your will power to fight the urge to move with the music. This is a test no one at Club Moscow was capable of passing last night. Hell & Lula is a band you don’t want to miss out on. - LaFamos performance review

"Show & Tell #3 (7.8.2010)"

As someone who works in the music industry, I am surrounded by people who constantly say, “I’m in a band!” I then proceed to talk music with them and encourage them to invite me to their next show so I can check them out. Generally though, most of these artists are not actively playing shows, and let’s face it in Los Angeles EVERYONE is in a band or an actor. I frequent a local coffee shop in the arts district where I made friends with a guy named Michael Alan, who informed me he was in a band with another friend Devon. Occasionally I’d hear him mention band practice, recording, and other stuff, but they weren’t quite playing shows yet. Then one day out of the blue I thought “You know maybe I should give Michael Alan’s band a listen.”

HOLY SHIT! that was the first thing I said, followed by a text to Michael Alan saying something along the lines of “Dude! Your band is incredible, why have you been holding out on me?” Ever since, I have eagerly been awaiting a show and the release of the CD. When the band finally played their first real show at a warehouse in the Arts District I was completely shocked. This quiet, down to earth, southern gentlemen who I have known for a little under a year all of a sudden morphed into what can easily be considered the love child of Freddie Mercury and Michael Jackson. I haven’t seen a band with that much energy on stage since the 90s boy bands.

Hell & Lula is not one of those groups that got together, wrote songs, practiced for a month, and then played a show. This band had their shit together and perfected before they ever stepped foot on stage. Their myspace was professional, their recordings were professional, and their image was consistent across the board. With Taylor’s hard hitting drums, Russell’s bass and backing vocals that perfectly complement Michael Alan’s voice, Devon’s intricate guitar riffs, finished off by Michael Alan’s incredible stage presence, not to mention his vocal range and the occasional keyboards, Hell & Lula is on their way to something huge. I guarantee that this time next year, Hell & Lula will be signed and selling out tours. They are already drawing crowd of 75-100 people in Los Angeles, which is not an easy feat considering they have only been playing out for roughly 3 months.

Do yourself a favor and check out this band’s music, learn a song, and check out a show. You will be blown away! The lyrics are extremely clever and the songs are super catchy. You will be dancing in no time!

My buddy Matt Henson is in the band Hell & Lula and they had a show close by last night so I decided to go and check it out. The music was rad, the lighting was decent, and the band was fun to photograph. Here were some of my favorites: - Justin Bettman Wordpress

Programmer/writer, Devon, and vocalist, MAK, met by chance in May 2009. After collaborating on the song "Set the World on Fire," (an up-tempo, dancy indie-rock track that has garnered the most attention for us at this point) both musicians decided to drop our respective projects and begin a new one, which required the singer's relocation from Austin to Los Angeles.

By March 2010, a full band was formed and in Dec 2010 we self-released our debut EP "Catch Up!!! Catch Up!!!" In Jan 2011, we signed with HYPE Music, a partnership between MTV and Extreme Music Publishing designed to be a launchpad for unsigned artists. In June 2011, MTV re-released "Catch Up!!! Catch Up!!!" with 2 previously unreleased tracks. Shortly following the launch of HYPE, we began enjoying placements in network TV in August 2011, including programs such as MTV’s Jersey Shore and Real World as well as VH1’s iheartradio festival..

Hell & Lula have thrice toured the southwestern/western US, showcased at SXSW 2011 and were also featured on the HYPE stage at the MTV Garage SXSW 2011, showcased at the Pastel Project 2012 in Las Vegas and will be playing Summerfest 2012 in Milwaukee. We tour in a "Cool Bus" (a converted school bus), have developed the first Recycled Merchandise Program we've ever heard of, and we help spread the message of our friends at Falling Whistles about the war in Congo, what can be done to stop it and how funds raised through the sale of whistles help rehabilitate war-affected kids. MAK met FW founder Sean Carasso in Austin in 2006 when both were working to raise awareness for the child soldier phenomenon in Africa and a natural development of that relationship evolved as both transitioned to new projects, years later, in Los Angeles. This relationship, coupled with Devon's own family's immigration from the continent of Africa in the 1980's and the band's commitment to positive social change have lead to a deep investment in the message and the objectives of the Falling Whistles campaign. We take their whistles and their story with us wherever we go.

Our 2nd EP is due Summer 2012. You'll notice immediately a stylistic progression with songs like Life Can Bust You Up. This new batch of material is smarter, edgier, dancier, indie-er, electronickier, world-music influenced-er, while still maintaining the accessibility, high-energy and pop sensibility that we enjoy. The current working title is Fermi's Paradox (which is the apparent contradiction between the current estimation of the probability of the existence of intelligent extraterrestrial life in the universe and the lack of concrete evidence for such civilizations).

Currently, we're launching a Pledge Music campaign to raise funds to finish the waste vegetable oil conversion on our Cool Bus, which will allow us to run on fry grease collected from restaurants as we tour from city to city.
