9:15p.m. rolls around and Hayley Jane and the Primates take the stage. The sparse crowd mills about, waiting in anticipation for what is sure to be one hell of a show. A raw, pungent smell of old sweat and stale beer perforates the silence.
The lead singer, Jane, smiles playfully into the eyes of some unseen lover residing in the back of the Middle East Upstairs. One by one the rest of the band follows her on stage, taking their places behind her. Jane introduces the band, and sets off into a vocal set that any diva would be jealous of.
Her band mates, a hodge podge of other Boston area bands, follow her stellar vocals as close as they can for the half hour they are allotted as the opening gig.
For its entirety, Hayley Jane belts heartfelt, quirky lyrics set to a crawling 1950's jazz and blues inspired soundtrack.
They are a tough act to follow. - Three Dudes Music Corner
