Bayport-based band, Guy Pablos, did not advance to the final round of Bamboozle's Break Contest last month, but that won't stop the seven member ensemble from fulfilling their summer plans, which include recording an album, and for some members, heading to college.
The Break Contest allows unknown and local bands to compete for a chance to play the Bamboozle Festival, which occurred earlier this month in Rutherford, New Jersey, and featured performances by Lil' Wayne and Motley Crue.
The twelve hour-long final round, which took place at the Crazy Donkey in Farmingdale brought out 22 of the original 500 bands.
Break Contest's winning band was Wordspit the Illest, who Guy Pablos' Nick Vetri described as "amazing."
"They're really genuine guys," said Evan Schlossberg who also plays in Guy Pablos.
Guy Pablos didn't advance to the final round because they didn't utilize social media enough, according to Joe Boisits. Boisits said the judges told the band they had "high energy" and are "what Bamboozle looks for," but they lacked social media outreach.
The band has since vowed to use social media more. Curious readers can visit them at www.twitter.com/guypablos; www.myspace.com/guypablos and www.youtube.com/guypablos.
"Social networking is very important these days," said the band's Bryan Rooney.
As for competing in the Break Contest next year the band says yes. "We made it really far this time," said Andrew Frey, the band's drummer.
Though this year's Break Contest was not the sweeping victory they hoped for, the band did make important contacts in the music industry, which they plan to use this summer while recording their first album. The band also has summer plans to tour Long Island, but nothing is concrete yet.
At summer's close the band plans to stick together, although some of the members will take on a whole new commitment - college. Rooney plans to attend York College in Pennsylvania and Nick Vetri plans to attend the State University of New York at Stony Brook and will major in Philosophy.
"It's like a long distance relationship," said Frey, who plans to attend college in the fall but does not know where yet. "We're together through thick and thin." - Sayville-Bayport Patch
Bayport-based band Guy Pablos is one step closer to playing the famed Bamboozle concert at the New Meadowlands Complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey after winning the first two rounds of Bamboozle's Break Contest.
Should Guy Pablos win at their final show off at the Crazy Donkey in Farmingdale on April 2, the band will play the main stage of the Bamboozle concert with the likes of Bruno Mars, Taking Back Sunday and Lil' Wayne.
Other grand prizes include a professional photo shoot, a demo submission to a major record label, a song in the Bamboozle Break Competition Compilation and six months of free healthcare through Rock for Health, according to the competition's website. Bamboozle Break competitions are also being held in New York City, New Jersey and Connecticut.
Members of Guy Pablos described their win as a major triumph.
"This competition has made people take us more seriously," said Andrew Frey, the band's drummer.
The seven-member band met as students in Bayport-Blue Point School District. Two of the members have graduated and the other five are still students at Bayport-Blue Point High School.
Also in the band is Bryan Rooney, lead vocals and guitar; Joe Boisits, base; Evan Schlossberg, guitar and backup vocal; Ryan Coveno, trumpet and auxillary precussion; Nick Vetri, rhythm guitar and lead vocals, and Bob-O Vetri, trumpet. Their sound is alternative with ska and indie influences, according to Coveno.
Boisits, who is still in high school, made an announcement to his classmates after the band won round two of the competition. Boisits asked his peers to support the band by spreading word of their win and purchasing tickets for the next round.
Afterwards, classmates inquired about tickets and wished the band luck and congratulations, which lead Boisits to believe the contest was not only about Guy Pablos, but also about putting Bayport bands on the map.
"Its not just about the band, it's about Bayport," said Boisits.
Winning the Break Contest is a popularity contest, but is also based on judge's approval. At the last show, Guy Pablos brought out 47 fans. They hope to bring out even more at the next show.
"There's so much energy in their music and they have a great time," Schlossberg's mother, Donna, said.
