This past April, Gina Cimmelli, a 26-year-old graduate from Berklee College of Music, ventured from her native Brooklyn to Los Angeles to record her forthcoming new EP, Summer Singles. "It completely changed the vibe," she noted of relocating the recording sessions to the West Coast. "It was bright and sunny [there] while it was snowy back in New York. Because we recorded in L.A. all the songs now had this sunnier, warm vibe."
The brightness is palpable in Cimmelli's music. Although, as the singer-songwriter told us, music has always been a mode of self-expression no matter the mood. "I try to write really genuine and honest moments of life...both the emotional highs and lows."
While "Like I Did," the second single to be released off Summer Singles (which you can exclusively stream below) is sonically free flowing and wispy, it was the result of a hard-fought five-year relationship. "I wanted to get across the sadness," she explained. "But I was also a little pissed off. I didn't want it to be a full-out angry song; I just wanted it to be darker." The track, she added, helped her come to terms with the fact that "some relationships are just better with the book closed."
Going forward, Cimmelli, whose track "Don't Be Mad" was recently used in a Free People ad campaign, has straightforward goals: She wants as many people as possible to hear her music. "I just want to travel and infect people's minds," she said. - ELLE MAGAZINE
Summer isn’t sunshine and beaches for everyone – just try a Scottish one if you ever want to dispute that – but the variety of experiences everyone gets is beneficial as it leads to all kind of different inspirations for different artists. On Gina Cimmelli’s new EP, Summer Singles, we get a variety of summer experiences, and lead track, “Like I Did” showcases a lazy and smooth take on past loves that feels like it would be suited perfectly to the dying light of the last days of summer The air’s a little chillier, friends have gone back to their days jobs and universities, and you’re left with the lingering memories: that’s the kind of mood Cimmelli captures here, injecting a little snarl into it as the track swells towards the end. She plays around with the bare necessities, starting of with little more than some throbbing bass and her airy voice before building carefully. Listen and/or download it below. - BEATS PER MINUTE
Every so often I become fairly disillusioned with the acoustic singer songwriter genre. Personally I like my acoustic music to be just that, acoustic. Stripped back, mainly letting the guitar, vocals, and lyrics do their thing. Unfortunately there seems to be an increasingly common approach for acoustic artists to quickly shun their rawer roots in favour of a bigger, more in your face production that leans more to pop music than it does acoustic. (Gabrielle Aplin is an example - for me her early work far outshines the debut record which the masses have so far gobbled up this year but left me fairly disappointed).
Which today leads us to Gina Cimmelli, a Brookyln based singer songwriter who oozes talent, confindence, and a clear appreication of how powerful her gentle, yet alluring music can be. 'Clementine' is the first of three tracks which will make up her latest EP which is due to be released this Summer.
The track has a beautiful arrangement throughout, with Cimmelli's vocals a clear standout - her voice is tantalizingly fragile yet assured, and overall the track has lovely warm feeling. Imagine a slowed down Best Coast crossed with First Aid it and The Staves and you're getting somewhere close. Keep your ears out for the next single 'Like I Did', which we can tell you is equally fantastic! - Music Liberation
Dreamy pop stuff from a dreamy pop girl that sounds like a dreamy Kate Nash-y kind of dream.

Turns out I’m a sucker for anyone who takes pictures with sparklers.

veryone! I hope you are ready to relax because Brooklyn based artist, Gina Cimmelli has the song to make you have a seat and just sit and unwind. Her voice is smoother than the first cup of coffee to start the day, and the glass of whatever you unwind with to end the day with. The song is Clementine, and it just recently debuted on American Songwriter. I could sit here and listen to this song on repeat (pssh, like I haven't already!) and just read my books and feel at ease. So I hope you give her a listen, and a like on Facebook. And guess what... Heads up, sun-drenched, mason-jar-drinking, fishtail-braid-wearin’ lovelies: Brooklyn singer/songwriter Gina Cimmelli has a new tune out for your aural pleasure. “Like I Did” comes off her forthcoming EP “Summer Singles,” and packs a serious sonic punch. Cimmelli’s music echoes the stylings of Leslie Feist and June Carter, with the vocal power and angst of a female Conor Oberst.
“Like I Did” laments a lost love who refuses to be forgotten, despite how much it should be. It’s anchored by a resonant bass line and Cimmelli’s sweetly affecting harmonies, surrounded by a dissonant guitar chord that echoes Cimmelli’s frustration at a love that just won’t go away. Weirdly, it blended perfectly into the beginning of Sunset Rubdown’s “Shut Up I Am Dreaming,” which my iTunes, for unknown reasons, put on next.
But don’t just take my word for it; listen to “Like I Did” on SoundCloud below and download for free by following the link.
Also watch this short film by Free People, “Neighbors,” featuring Cimmelli's track "Don't Be Mad" and starring Daisy Lowe as a lady who realizes that the best place to find love is at home. - BUST MAGAZINE

My other favorite Brooklyn discovery of the past week is Gina Cimmelli. She's releasing new music as part of her Summer Singles EP. Check out the latest, "Like I Did," below. She has an assured voice, and I like how this track keeps getting stronger as it goes along, but in such a way you almost don't notice. It starts with a simple bass and her vocals, but by the end, there is a whole band going and some serious harmonizing (I think it's all her, which demonstrates her range). It seems there should be one more track on the EP, so keep an ear out for that. - THOSE WHO DID

Bio
Independent Music Award winner Gina Cimmellis latest EP begins in a dark, sweet whisper, making her fondness for haunting, beautiful melodies immediately apparent. Though often held in the same light as Feist or Regina Spektor, subtle timbres in her voice show hints of Billy Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, revealing a stylistic approach thats both relevant and timeless. Her latest work, Summer Singles, is a spectrum of genre, emotion, and experience, yet filtered through the beautiful sepia of optimism; shines unwavering rays of sunshine on even the darkest moments of summertime.
Summer Singles is a progressive step forward for the singer/songwriter, whose past releases have garnered heavy rotation on SiriusXM, charted on the Roots Music Report, Deli Magazine (NYC) and the Independent Music Network and even a placement in a national ad campaign for Free People. Combining her signature wit and inflection with daring, yet incredible focused production; the releases bright lyrics and warms melodies will naturally become the soundtrack to your Summer, Winter, Autumn, and Spring.
As a third generation Brooklynite, Ginas exposure to the buzzing, flowing music scene of the city had a distinct influence on her, and is heard bursting through the melodies on Summer Singles. An even greater impression, however, was made within her own family. There was always music in my house," she recalls, and to no hyperbole: her great-grandmother an Italian opera singer, her grandfather a multi-instrumentalist from the golden days of radio, it seems only fitting she become the troubadour she is.
