"BAMcafe Live"

Catalyzed by the brave, venturesome vocals of Erica Glyn, indie pop/rock band For Feather has mastered the art of turning the mundane into the marvelous. Quirky melodies pull rather than push the listener, keeping things light with spacious harmonies evoking the early Beatles. - BAMcafe Live

"Local Spotlight NYC"

For Feather is a tight 4-piece ensemble, lead by Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Erica Glyn. They are a strong band with avant-rock tendencies that lend a spryness to their often improvised works. Marimbas and the upright bass also frequently find their way into this nontraditional group’s ever-shifting song structures.

Prior to becoming For Feather, the band played as a similarly constructed collective called Bella. A change in name and a few small tweaks to their lineup in 2007 also prompted a new CD release that year. Your Friends Are Doing Well is a 6-track collection that displays Glyn’s confessional, sometimes quirky, and often teetering lyrical content. Many tracks begin their journeys as straightforward pop songs, but quickly fall off the standard route, exploring darker, more abstract content.

For Feather debuted their first record at the renowned Joe’s Pub in the East Village. And performances at BAMCafe and The Knitting Factory last year helped solidify their live shows. Now with a monthly residency at Williamsburg venue Spike Hill, For Feather continues to play behind their new record entitled Firing at Love Field, set to be released in early spring. The album was mixed by Joel Hamilton of Studio G, who has worked with such artists as Elvis Costello and Tom Waits. Working with them on a visual level is Spanish multimedia artist and independent filmmaker, Laia Cabrera, who creates live video streams for For Feather’s shows, weaving her own images and animations into the performance.

With an upcoming new record, a list of shows here in Brooklyn, and a range of new material coming out of both the studio and the improvised live environment, For Feather is carving out a respectable path for themselves this year.

For Feather's monthly residency continues every third Thursday of the month at Spike Hill in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Look for their next show there on March 26th.

Bio

After working for a Grammy nominated record producer and recording engineer, Erica Glyn decided that being in front of the glass and on stage was more her passion than being behind it. She decided to venture out of Manhattan and into the depths of the Brooklyn music scene where she was exposed to a large array of musicians who were interested, knowledgeable and highly competent in all genres of music. She played with a large number of them while honing her own craft, sound and song writing. When she left the comforts of Manhattan, which included the high-end studios she was fortunate enough to work in, Glyn purchased her own gear and set up a home studio where she recorded These Small Hours (2006) with avant-rocker Jesse Krakow. They formed a band called Bella, which has since morphed into the current For Feather: Erica Glyn (guitar, vocals), David Weintraub (guitar), Evan Silverman (upright bass) and Rohin Khemani (drums and percussion).

For Feather is influenced by bands such as: Flaming Lips, Radiohead, PJ Harvey, Bowie, Pixies, Kinks, Stravinsky, The Troggs, Squeeze, Terry Riley and Tortoise; artists such as: Banksy, Basquiat, Rembrandt, Angola Prison Art and Hundertwasser; movies such as: Koyaanisqatsi: Life out of Balance, Being John Malchovich, Tokyo!, A Hard Days Night and The Big Lebowski, as well as the amalgams of inspiration floating through cyberspace. For Feather pushes boundaries in collaboration, palate and sonic temperament. They are guided by their desire to create and be created and the desires that ebb and flow in our rapidly chaotic environment while maintaining the basic desires that lie within, the basic human universal need - - to love. The band is named after the song For Feather which was inspired by a Craigslist “missed connection” post.

Coming from the heart and coming from the head, For Feather is an indie art-rock band that delves into improvs, catchy choruses, dreamy sequences and avant juxtapositions. Songs range from tight and precise to extended journeys with unexpected twists and turns. Often working with filmmaker and live video artist Laia Cabrera and live animator Isabelle Duverger, For Feather’s shows are inspiring, cinematic ever changing experiences. Over the past 2+ years, For Feather has been playing reputable venues in New York and Brooklyn: Bamcafe Live, Joe’s Pub, Nublu, Southpaw and Zebulon to name a few.

Your Friends Are Doing Well, their first CD was completed in October 2007. They have just completed their second record Firing At Love Field which was mixed by Joel Hamilton (Sparklehorse, Tom Waits, Dub Trio) and was celebrated in June at Monkey Town in Williamsburg Brooklyn.
