This Vancouver, Washington based 5-piece has been making significant waves within the Pacific Northwest music scene. Their most recent album, “No Ceilings” released in 2016, prompted the band to embark on a winter tour through California, Oregon, and Washington. I had the great fortune of serving as the band’s booking agent for their winter tour, and heard nothing but positive remarks from fans and venues alike. Their show in Portland at Analog Cafe & Theater saw a sold out crowd, launching the band to new heights.
Among the songs on their “No Ceilings” album, include their single “Cerveza” which blends folk-pop with reggae. I can certainly imagine listening to this band while laying on a beach with a Corona in my hand. These lads certainly have busy schedules, with vocalist Madison Fischer also maintaining a solo music career as Kid Indigo, and brother Marcus Fischer also with a solo career as Astral OG. The band is scheduled to perform at Music at the Views Festival in May, as well as other shows that you can find on their website. I can’t wait to see what these guys do next! - Andy Daniels
Why do we like this?
"Cerveza," means beer in Español. It's also the name of this chilled-out beached-vibe tune by Foreign Talks, and it rocks.
Packing for Mexico for the holiday season has me anticipating hot sands, warm blue waters and ice cold beers for days. I'll be out there from Christmas through the New Year, and I cannot, fucking, wait.
This tune is going to play on several of the playlists I'm setting up for that trip, as it should. The mood is perfect and the song is extra catchy from beginning to end.
Of course, this is the perfect summer tune, but if you too are headed towards summer this winter, well then bring this jam along with you and a couple of beers. You won't regret it. - Indie Shuffle
With clearly developed songs featuring growling bass lines, thumping drums, catchy guitar riffs and four part vocal harmonies you’d never guess that Portland band Foreign Talks is composed of four teenagers; brothers Marcus (18) and Madison Fischer (17) along with their pals Tanner Steinmetz (19) and Kevin Downes (19). Playing together only since high school in 2011 the band has already cultivated a unique sound featuring vocal harmonies led by Marcus and Madison’s sometimes guttural, sometimes quivering, never sounding like a teenager’s vocal delivery. Add to the mix clever lyrics and the kind of energy inherent in youth and you have yourselves an impressive band just beginning to explore their potential.
Listen to Foreign Talks “Denial”:
When asked how they feel about the attention they’ve gotten thus far Marcus graciously replied: “Well first off we feel very blessed to have all these opportunities such as being a part of a label, and recording an album! But when it comes to the early attention of the record were just so excited that the people have enjoyed our sound as much as we have. The more feedback, the more we realize that our dreams are coming true, and that’s all anyone can ask for man.” Well put.
The group recently signed to Expunged Records and just released their self-titled debut this month. The 10 track album is punctuated throughout with punky, rocking and poppy gems like “Denial” above. -
Foreign Talks – “Rip It Up Slow” Video
As I sat on the cement, waiting unimaginable times for my female posse to get their prized cilantro french fries, this Vancouver, Washington group built their four piece pop-up band literally right around me. Many groups who take this fashionable approach during SXSW are often questionable, yet the reggae rap vibes these guys gave off with impressionable tracks like “Rip It Up Slow” were not only good enough to keep me seated, but earn a solid crowd of magnified passersby. - BY: BEWARE
Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Busy busy Well thx. (Marcus)
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Cerveza”?
Cerveza was a song that came along later in the process of this album,I think it was 1 of the last 2 songs we recorded. We knew right after we tracked recorded and listen to it on the monitors that this is going to be our summer jam. (Maddy )
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
Yeah but I can’t give you any details, Lets just say it involves beer, surfing, warm summer nights on the Oregon coast and two lovely ladies. (Maddy)
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Oh yes, just trying to get the weather to cooperate and getting the right film crew to shoot it. Might even head over to Hawaii to shoot some scenes. (Maddy)
The single comes off your new album No Ceilings – what’s the story behind the title? How was the recording and writing process?
We Mostly jam out some tunes at band practice and Maddy or I will fall in love with A particular jam and write to it. Sometimes Maddy will come to practice with a song he made at a party or just sitting at home picking the ukulele or the guitar and play it for us and we will all then add our perspective Instruments to the song. And Maddy and I come up with harmonies that can enhance the song if needed. And Shit Recording is recording. Recording is what we live for. We work with one of the best recording engineers in Portland so it makes it easy and fun. (Marcus)
How would this album showcase a more matured side of the band?
On the first album we were not involved as much, we would come in sing then leave, and we were kind of OK with that. This time around we are more involved from the beginning to the end and when you get to see that it makes you grow up a little bit , it gives you more pride in your art. And when you have more involvement in the process there’s no excuses. You have to take ownership. So this album has us stepping out on the ledge trying different things and making it fit. (Marcus)
Known for blending different genres – does one style tends to shine out the most depending on the lyrics’ theme or how do you work that out?
We feel that a well-balanced Indie style is the most dominant sound on this album. We blend a little bit of reggae and hip-hop in like pop giants like sublime and the chili peppers. The style we have is the perfect soundtrack to snowboard, skateboard and mountain bike too. We Feel like we a have a style that you should be able to dance to at a beach party after a long day of surfing as well as sit back and reflect on love lost. Main theme of our style should be fun and love. (Maddy)
What aspects of hope and love get to inspire the lyrics on this album?
We try and look at hope and love from a youthful perspective. Knowing that we don’t have all the answers but we’re giving it our best shot at life ,exploration, caring, interaction with others and inspiring others to live their dreams. So we hope our lyrics deliver since of ambition to others. That’s hope and love for oneself and others around you. (Maddy)
Any plans to hit the road?
Yes indeed we will most likely be hitting the road mid August doing Washington Oregon and Idaho College bars and venues. It’s looking like we’ll have a few hemp based festivals as well. We’re willing to go anywhere in the world and we are looking forward to travel and living on the road. (Marcus)
What else is happening next in Foreign Talks’ world?
Looks like we will be getting back in the studio for our next album in between show dates at the end of the summer and we have a few solo projects coming your way. Keep a lookout for Astral OG (Marcus)and Kid indigo (Madison)and More. And we hope to bring out new artist up through our indie Record label Sacred Souls one day. (Marcus) - Vents Magazine
Vancouver, Washington-based quintet Foreign Talks follow-up their 2013, self-titled debut with No Ceilings, a vast departure from the hook-laden, indie-pop of their debut. And while No Ceilings is still chalk-full of memorable, alluring melodies, the outfit (now a five-piece) has expanded into a more reggae-driven sound, while still adding their love of indie-pop into every number.
Comprised of brothers Madison Fischer (lead vocals, percussion) and Marcus Fischer (lead vocals, guitar, bass), Tanner Steinmetz (guitar, bass, backing vocals), Kevin Downes (guitar, backing vocals, percussion), and Jeff Wagner (drums), Foreign Talks has grown a lot since forming in 2011, while still in high school.
They’ve also matured leaps and bounds from the release of their debut, with, at the very least, each member graduating from high school. But, with growth and maturity, Foreign Talks have truly come into their own, resulting in the thirteen track collection that is No Ceilings, an album that “represents that our sound has evolved and will continue to ascend upward,” says Marcus Fischer.
“Since the debut,” he continues, “we have all matured musically and personally, and grown in a lot of ways. Our sound has evolved just as much as our lives have, and No Ceilings really reflects that.”
As the young ambassadors for the PN-Dub’s outdoor activities and lifestyle – surfing, hiking, skateboarding, and snowboarding – this band likes to party, such as on the album’s first single, “Rip It Up,” a warm, danceable pop-reggae song that proclaims, “ganja ganja, we rip it up slow.” But the band is capable of much more, as evident in “All Alone,” which showcases Madison’s angel-like vocal and the band’s ability to harmonize, delivering a sweet, soothing indie-pop treat that will have fans of their debut quite impressed.
“Cerveza,” the album’s second single, finds the band blending folk-pop with reggae, resulting in an instantly memorable song that is both perfect for sitting back with a beer and soaking in warm weather, or hitting the dance floor and shaking it.
“The album has a lot of different vibes,” confesses Marcus. “The theme of this album is to believe in yourself, chase your dreams, and just all around good vibes and love, and I think the music reflects that.”
Writing the songs together, the band hit the studio and laid down rough draft versions of all the tracks, then came back one by one and honed in on each of their parts. The result is something the band is quite happy with, explaining it is exactly how they heard it in their heads.
While proud of their debut, the band is quick to point out they had a lot more fun recording No Ceilings, even adding a couple of songs at the tail end of the recording session, because they felt they had to be on the record.
Recorded at Isaac Brock’s (Modest Mouse) studio, songs like “Chocolate Vanilla” and “Disco” showcase the band’s penchant for hip-hop, while “Rules” and “Man” find the band dwelling in the familiar indie-pop and folk-rock leanings of their debut.
Meanwhile, “NuNu” and “Purple” are the album’s standout rockers, proving that the band may have grown up and matured, but they haven’t grown out of the sounds of their debut, just expanded it, taking chances and widening their palette for those that already enjoy their undeniable pop sensibilities and gorgeous vocal harmonies.
Now, the only thing on the band’s mind is to hit the road, relentlessly touring, and spreading their message of good vibes, love, and living your dream, all while exposing people to their warn, vibrant sound that will put a smile on your face the minute you hear it. - Vents Magazine

I was recently sent the new album “No Ceilings ” by Foreign Talks that was just released on April 16th, 2016 on Woods Entertainment. This second album called “No Ceilings” was recorded in the impressive Modest Mouse studio) with the previous self-titled release in 2013 on Expunged Records which is Blind Pilot’s label . “No Ceilings” is full of thirteen way diverse tracks which has elements of indie rock, reggae , rap, hip hop and soul often all within one song .The album opened with a song called “ Cerveza” with indie rock and reggae soulful vibes that immediately made me want to sing along . My favorite line “was spending time thinking of dreams not coming true, I’d rather be surfing “.
The next song opened with a simple guitar and solo guitar “Typhoon” and then moved into a vibey track with attitude but still retaining that soulful almost rap vibe . I loved the message in this song ” slow down and everything will be ok” and it is so true. “Wasted” which referred to wasted time brought that quick hip hop reggae vibe with huge harmonious vocals too . The fourth track “Chocolate Vanilla” feat Myke Bogan had a bit more pop yet soulful hip hop attitude going on in the song.
The new, second album “No Ceilings” by “Foreign Talks” continued with loaded reggae rock danceable tracks called “Rip It Up Slow” and “Disco”. You can also see above the music video for “Rip It Up Slow” which shows the band members singing outside via a camping adventure. The song “Disco” had a lighter smoother hip hop element to verses which I loved with my favorite line from “Disco” was the line “You can find yourself on the way home “. I quite enjoyed the vibey harmonies of the song “Man” in the main chorus of the song and the slower soulful moments. The eighth track started with some way cool instrumentals for “Only if” which somehow reminded me of an old spy movie and has some way cool hooks going on throughout the song which made me feel like dancing ! A funny song about the weather called “Rules” was about getting together no matter the weather which had a more indie-folk style.
A classic rock track started with an almost retro start called “Purple” and the soulful lead vocal of Madison really shines in this song and then playing off the other vocals of his brother Marcus. The eleventh song created quite the soulful and emotional message with “All Alone” with the pure vocals of Madison with band harmonizing which talks about wishing one could go back in time in a relationship. The next to last song was a high energy song “NuNu” that had a bit of a harder rock edge attitude but then ends with some way cool vibey beats . This fantastic new album by Foreign Talks concludes No Ceilings with a song called “Black Magic” which combines reggae , rap and soulful rock into a message about ‘not letting them control your mind’ with references to society .

From the shores of sunny California to the beaches of Hawaii, from the rocky coasts of Oregon to the pure sands of Jamaica – there is a common love of a certain kind of roots music – the kind of music that you enjoy while kicking back with a cold cerveza on the wet sand with your surfboard beside you. The music you listen to while you drift away into daydreams – and maybe most of all, the kind of music that you listen to in order to take a journey to a more relaxed, happier place. Foreign Talks has captured this sound in their new album No Ceilings, and is prepared to officially release the music and the ideas behind it to the world at Dante’s Portland Friday night, July 1.
Foreign Talks is composed of a group of very young men, who formed their band while still in high school together in Vancouver, Washington. Five years later, they are still together, writing cooperatively, touring, and making plans for the future of the band. It speaks volumes about the band that they are still together despite families moving, college offers, employment opportunities and the like. These young men are dedicated to their music and to following wherever the path leads them. At the core of the band are 2 brothers, Madison Fischer (lead vox/percussion) and Marcus Fischer (lead vox/guitar/bass), who are less than two years apart in age. Their bandmates, however, are also as close as the siblings. Tanner Steinmetz (guitar/bass/backing vox). Kevin Downes (guitar/backing vox/percussion), and Jeff Wagner (drums) are also founding and current members of this unusually loyal group. Like brothers, they argue, tease, challenge, and encourage each other constantly. It takes a close bond to hold a band together through high school and young adulthood. These guys are literally growing up together in every way, especially musically!
At their formation in 2011, Marcus Fischer says that the band was “finding their voice” and exploring the music they loved – a very vocally and melodically-driven indie sound. With a strong exposure to jazz, R&B, rap, pop, rock, and any other kind of music you can name, the Fischer brothers are able to absorb genres like sponges. Since the release of their self-titled album in 2013, the band has been immersing themselves in island roots music. The new album No Ceilings shows that the band believes there are no boundaries to music, and they are presenting a fusion sound of pop and reggae, R&B with surf, and just general “chill out” music that is catchy and relaxing. They have not just incorporated the reggae sound, either – it’s more of a lifestyle choice. The band has taken the time to appreciate the driving force and emotion behind the laid back reggae beat and island tone. Marcus explains that life today is hard, and music is a way to express and escape internal struggles that might otherwise be too difficult to bear. Foreign Talks wants to bring peace, joy, and love wherever they go, while getting people on the dance floor with a bottle of beer.
In the audio interview, Marcus really does a great job to explain the versatility of Foreign Talks – they are expressing a lifestyle of acceptance, observation, exploration, and sharing. The band wants to be relevant by expressing that we all live in this same world and we all have negative obstacles to our happiness being placed in our path every day. Foreign Talks’ music is an encouragement to live today to its fullest, enjoy every minute, and share your love with a love-starved world. Check out the very talented and entertaining band this Friday night at Dante’s.
Special thanks to Alex Steininger of In Music We Trust for introducing Portland Notes to this band. And a huge shout out to Isaac Brock and Woods Entertainment for helping to create the amazingly produced tunes on No Ceilings. The album is available for purchase now on CD Baby and ITunes. You can also listen on Spotify. - Portland Notes
Foreign Talks performs track from new album on Live at 7 (Video Interview and Performance on Live television) - KGW News
In 2013, a new band produced a self-titled album with an indie-pop sound that got a lot of attention. Foreign Talks style=, a Vancouver, Washington style=-based quintet features Madison Fischer on lead vocals and percussion; Marcus Fischer on lead vocals, guitar and bass; Tanner Steinmetz on guitar, bass and backing vocals; Kevin Downes on guitar, backing vocals and percussion and Jeff Wagner on drums. Having increased in number the band has also increased their variety of song style, producing a new album called No Ceilings style=.
No Ceilings still has that indie-pop style, but there is a distinctive reggae style= influence here, reminiscent of Sublime style=. According to Marcus Fischer, "we have all matured musically and personally, and grown in a lot of ways. Our sound has evolved just as much as our lives have, and No Ceilings really reflects that." Most of the album has that reggae feel. The first two tracks are somewhat laid back, but have different messages. Cerveza style= is a song about someone who enjoys being with his girl, but has other interests and doesn't exactly want to be tied down. Typhoon style= asks the people of the world to slow down and enjoy the moment. The next track, Wasted style=, has a punk indie sound with rocking guitars and percussion. Chocolate Vanilla style= is a darker indie track that alludes to a love going sour. Rip It Up Slow style= is a reggae track that is pretty much an ode to the band's advocacy for marijuana use and, while I may not agree with the message here, I can't deny that the song is rather catchy.
And those are just some of the stand out tracks. No Ceilings has a rather unique sound. The lyrics are explicit, but that's nothing to write home about - other bands have been much more explicit in nature. The fact that the lyrics are incredibly catchy makes the songs on the album memorable. After listening to the album only twice, the hooks of Cerveza and Chocolate Vanilla were permanently implanted in my mind. This expansion into a new style and sound is a good one for Foreign Talks. No Ceilings proves that Foreign Talks is not some flash in the pan indie band, but a more complex band that can flow with the times. Can't wait to see what they come up with next! - G-Pop
Foreign Talks, not to be confused with Kris’ Picks additions Foreign Fields, caught my attention with yet another relaxing song titled “All Alone.” Are you realizing the theme for this week yet?
“All Alone” reminded me a bit of Captiva, both in lyrical content and relaxing, beach-vibe sounds that resonate in the listener’s ears. It’s hard not to tap your foot along with the infectious chorus and calming guitar riffs.
“All Alone” is my favorite out of all the ‘featured four,’ it’s a song that carried that wow factor I always look for, and it made for a very pleasant walk across campus.
Use Foreign Talks’ track to get you through the day, or if you’re really feeling it, take the day off and reminisce with this playlist. - Kriz Perez

Recorded at Isaac Brock's (Modest Mouse) studio, songs like "Chocolate Vanilla" and "Disco" showcase the band's penchant for hip-hop, while "Rules" and "Man" find the band dwelling in the familiar indie-pop and folk-rock leanings of their debut.
Meanwhile, "NuNu" and "Purple" are the album's standout rockers, proving that the band may have grown up and matured, but they haven't grown out of the sounds of their debut, just expanded it, taking chances and widening their palette for those that already enjoy their undeniable pop sensibilities and gorgeous vocal harmonies.
Now, the only thing on the band's mind is to hit the road, relentlessly touring, and spreading their message of good vibes, love, and living your dream, all while exposing people to their warm, vibrant sound that will put a smile on your face the minute you hear it.
