APPLE VALLEY — Singing their hearts out, three aspiring actresses native to Apple Valley are finalists in a chance to perform with the musical “Wicked.”
Originating in the United Kingdom, the “Wannabe Wicked” has crossed the pond and Chelsea Franko, 18, Emily Yates, 18, and Tiffany Nutter, 28, are among the 15 finalists chosen from a nationwide singing competition. The grand prize winner will perform for one night in the hit musical “Wicked” at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles.
Contestants from across the country submitted videos singing songs from the musical, and over a period of weeks a chosen few traveled to Universal CityWalk in Los Angeles to perform for a chance to become finalists. Just like “American Idol,” Apple Valley residents can vote for their favorite video at www.citywalkhollywood.com/WickedVote until the grand prize winner is decided at 7 p.m., Wednesday.
After singing and performing in musicals together for years, Yates is nervous about competing against her long-time best friend, Franko.
“We’ve done everything together growing up, so it’s gone back and forth when she’s won and I’ve won,” said Yates. “It’s great to do this with her before we go our separate ways.”
Since the musical has legions of fans, some people put a lot of effort into it, said Yates.
“Some people flew all across the country to come here and brought lots of friends to cheer them on, there were huge crowds at City Walk the nights we performed for the judges,” said Yates. “Even Tiffany didn’t let being pregnant stop her from competing there.”
After passing up an understudy role in “Wicked” a few years ago when she resolved to focus on being a stay-at-home mom for her new family, Nutter jumped at the chance when her friends told her about the competition.
“It was a very different mix of people there,” said Nutter. “Some were good and some just loved the musical and were there to have fun. My husband and I met performing and once our kids are settled we’d like to get back into it.”
