Ella Ekko emerged as one of the winners of the 2010 Battle of the Bands in Boston and was voted one of Boston’s Top 3 R&B acts at the Boston Music Conference 2010 R&B Competition. Ekko and her group are among the nominees for Best R&B Group, and Ekko’s song “Water” is among the nominees for Best CD/Single at the 2011 New England Urban Music Awards. With her supporting band Ekko & The Gang, Ella is performing at this year’s New England Urban Music Awards Ceremony.
Starting out with her real name Uyanga, Ekko has recently adopted the stage name Ella Ekko. Writing and performing from a very young age, she has performed and recorded in Switzerland and Mongolia, giving interviews on the Swiss radios NRJ and Radio Fribourg, as well as being interviewed on TV for the Mongolian “Channel 25”.
Ekko moved to Boston in 2006 in order to pursue a music career in the states, earning a degree from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in December 2010. While at Berklee, Ekko has gathered together a diverse group of talented young musicians to form her band Ekko and the Gang. Drawn together by the sounds of the African-American Soul tradition, Ekko and her group have a modern, cosmopolitan take on soul music, fusing elements of Neo-soul, Jazz, Pop and R&B into a sleek sound of their own.
Known to give “electric performances” with her band, Ekko and the Gang were voted one of Boston’s Top 3 R&B acts at the Boston Music Conference in September 2010, as well as winning studio time at the 2010 Boston Battle of the Bands in December 2010.
Currently, Ekko’s been selected as one of the lead singers for the Rhythm of the Universe Concert at the Boston Symphony Hall. Having finished recording with the Gang, Ekko is competing for Best R&B Group and Best Single for her song “Water” at this year’s New England Urban Music Awards. Compared to Rufus and Chaka Khan with a unique flavor by the panel of judges at this year’s Urban Music Awards Auditions, Ekko and the Gang were selected to perform at the 2011 New England Urban Music Awards.
