So I’ve expressed my love for Fantomas in a previous post, and if you’ve taken the time to check them out you can probably guess that sometimes I like some weird shit. Well, here’s another for you, Eat Avery’s Bones. I really admire bands that can take chaos and noise and make it sound good. Eat Avery’s Bones does just that, taking awkward rhythms, dissonance, and some funny synth to make just the loveliest mess.
These guys are pretty nuts, they think they are machines, and they’re music is as crazy as they are. If you ever want to throw down and get weird, turn on some Eat Avery’s Bones.

Who’s Eat Avery’s Bones? How did you guys meet and start this band?
Avery happens to be Tex Avery, cartoonist of characters like droopy the dog.
The band consists of my brother and two close friends, in which the band was joined by my brother when he simply walked into the living room while the rest of us were practicing in and said “I’m in the band now.” No one disputed it. That was in 2005.
What’s the story behind your artist’s name?
I had watched a documentary about Tex Avery one night, and had a follow up dream that I ate him. Nothing else seemed to fit afterword. The name seems like it would fit a terrible halloween themed band or some abstract improv band. For now it will just have to fit us.
What are your music influences?
Our musical influences are all over the place. Things like minimal synth wave from the 70's and 80's, or classic rock, 8-bit music, experimental drone outs. If it has finesse, we shine our heads with it.
How was it to share the stage with Bomb The Music Industry?
The audience was really young at that show. I remember while we were playing some of them had their head in their hands, not wanting to hear us. It made my day.
What’s your method at the time of writing a song?
Our methods flip flop back and forth between starting at a riff and building upon it until we think it doesn’t suck, or making it up as we go along until it doesn’t suck. It sounds elementary, but it has serviced us well over the years.
Vomit at Dawn. How was the recording and writing process? How did you guys come up with the name?
Recording was great. Our producer was really laid back, and has an amazing ear for rhythm. It took about four weekends spread over a few months in Austin to finish, but we’re very happy with the results. The album name was taken from a facebook poll where I simply said “I need album name suggestions: NOW.” The winner was my friend Adrian, whose name simply fit what I was feeling at the time, in the best way.
What has been the funniest moment you guys have been or took part while touring?
When we played a show in Austin, and we were sitting in the back “greenroom”, or whatever. Anyway, I won’t say who, but there was a large canvas in the backroom, of some entry level college art, which was pretty ugly to look at. Somebody just started stabbing the canvas with a pair of car keys, and I couldn’t stop laughing. It was vandalism, and I couldn’t turn away. It’s the little things in life that count.
Are there any more plans for the future we should be aware of?
We’ll be recording new material by the end of the year. I hope it is brutal.
Do you guys feel you are moving on the right direction?
If that right direction is a downwards spiral of apathy and alcoholism, then, yes.

The show is also the penultimate shindig at the Chat Room Pub, but with bands like Fight Bite and Eat Avery's Bones on the bill, the collective could collect enough cash to build a 300-capcity non-profit venue. Chat Room Pub at 8 p.m. $5.

Eat Avery's Bones:
Perhaps this one's too soon to call. After all, EAB's still incredibly young, and they'll try to annoy you right out of the club, but in the current wave of quality, quirky bands from nearby suburbs (Voot Cha Index, Teenage Symphony) storming Deep Ellum clubs, this quartet is the most striking of the wonderkids. Their aggressive mixture of Adam Ant and Melt Banana, hard as it might be to digest, is anchored with incredible instrumentation--their guitarist, in particular, will rip your eyes out of their sockets. - By Sam Machkovech

"Finally, the group that goes beyond merely posing but instead transforms stages and clubs into their own personal carnival show finished things off beautifully. And I don't mean carnival show as in what the public sees, but rather the part that only the kids know about, complete with carnies doing meth behind the porta-johns after everyone goes home. Eat Avery's Bones has become a local icon, one of the few bands that brings a smile to your face whenever they take the stage. In this case the group was wearing its usual yet constantly revolving assortment of everything from a rastafarian cap (complete with fake dreads) to a brightly colored raincoat while continuing their lovely tradition of having an audience member don a wizard costume and hold the microphone in place for the group's drummer/singer. EAB's balanced mix of humor, energy, and chops is one of the best local live experiences and has yet to grow thin after witnessing their it several times over the past year. A couple of new songs (including one cover, I believe) were also nice surprises. Eat Avery's Bones will be releasing a split seven inch with Koji Kondo and I'm sure it will beat whatever over-hyped full length gets force fed to us all by publicist mafias, local and national alike. Starting in the early age of man, the year 2005 to be exact, the musical landscape of the world was devoid of inspiration. That is, if your world was in Rowlett, Texas, where four strangers joined forces to create something they had never tried before…and that is real music. Past failed endeavors had consisted of flailing around and shattering eardrums, instead of having any relatable qualities.
Though that is the past now, and your life has led up to reading the following words, this very moment: EAT AVERY’S BONES.
The meaning of the name is inconsequential, as it is far too juvenile to speak of why. What matters is what comes out of these machines, or people if you wish to call them. Unbridled joy meets with moments of personal anguish and regret, and every movement and phrase project the audacity to press forward in spite of it. Eat Avery’s Bones feed off of the tears of their detractors, and embrace passionately with those who wish to lay down their automatic emotional defense, and purely live in the moment.
All five members of Eat Avery’s Bones are currently scattered throughout the Texas landscape, and are inspired by everything they come across, even if they don’t know it yet. Anyone with a penchant for melodies boiling in all directions will not be disappointed with what Eat Avery’s Bones produce out of their instrumental holes.
