"Spirit West Coast to attract thousands to Laguna Seca"

Thousands of people are expected to congregate at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca this weekend for a three-day festival some have said is Christian music's version of the legendary rock 'n' roll fest Woodstock.

Now in its 14th year, Spirit West Coast will remain, for the most part, a Christian music festival, featuring some of the industry's top acts. But a Fourth of July celebration and inclusion of more "indie" artists add some surprises.
More than 30,000 people are expected to enter the gates and see about 100 performances — including musicians, speakers and comedians — on multiple stages throughout the festival, which runs from Thursday through Saturday.
"This is a music festival, summer vacation retreat, a coastal resort get-away all rolled into one," said event director and organizer Jon Robberson.
Organizers say the Spirit West Coast festival at Laguna Seca is one of the two largest Christian music events in the southwestern United States. The other is the Spirit West Coast's event in Del Mar, held May 28 to 30.
Headliners for this week's event include Jeremy Camp, Third Day and Newsboys — the Grammy award-nominated Christian pop-rock band set to release its new album, "Born Again," on July 13.
"It's a great record with some killer songs on it," Robberson said.
Spirit West Coast is to today's Christian music, organizers have said, as Woodstock was to 1969's rock 'n' roll scene.
But along with more familiar artists, Robberson said Monday, the event has invited more musicians emerging in the Christian music genre, including Visalia-based Vira Avenue and Driven Cure.
"We continue to have top-level artists," he said, "but we wanted to do a lot more with up-and-coming artists."
In addition to music, Spirit West Coast includes motivational speakers and a children's activities ground.
Typically held at the end of July, this is the first time the festival's been scheduled around and during the Fourth of July weekend. Spirit West Coast 2010 is set to conclude with a patriotism theme Saturday, Robberson said; highlights include an Abraham Lincoln impersonator.
"[Spirit West Coast] is, number one, a music festival," he said. "But there are other elements that make this a great retreat for families and friends."

Press Release 2010-003

Officers leaving Department to pursue ministry and music

Police Chief Jay Varney announced today that Chowchilla Police officers Phil Cheatham and Heath Middleton will be leaving the Chowchilla Police Department in April 2010 and trading in their badges and guns to serve in a different capacity. Officers Cheatham and Middleton will be devoting themselves full time to their Christian band Driven Cure.

Cheatham and Middleton along with Michael Cheatham and Justin Webster formed Driven Cure in May of 2008 as a Christian outreach ministry of Passion Driven Ministries. The focus of the music outreach has been to use music to open the hearts of individuals and help them develop their passion to be used as a positive influence in their faith, families, churches and local communities. In the past two years Driven Cure has traveled locally and across the country to play Christian music venues at churches, Christian festivals and Christian sponsored events.

Driven Cure was signed by Tate Music Group in January 2009 and released their first CD called “Astray No More” in September 2009. Tate Music Group digitally distributes their music at locations like I-tunes, Amazon.com and other popular down load sites.

Officer Cheatham and Middleton have enjoyed their time spent as police officers in the City of Chowchilla. Officer Cheatham will be leaving his assigned duty at Chowchilla High School as the Campus Resource Officer where he has served at for the last 7 years. Bio

Driven Cure was formed in May 2008 with the purpose to be an outreach ministry. While combining many influences to create a progressive Rock/Worship style, Driven Cure's aim is to take people on a musical and spiritual journey. In January 2009 Driven Cure signed on with Tate Music Group, an independent label from Mustang, OK, and released their first album entitled "Astray No More" later that fall. During the early months of 2010 Driven Cure as a collective made the prayerful decision to resign from their current employment status and pursue their passion of music ministry. Lead vocalist Heath Middleton and bassist Phil Cheatham served as police officers for many years in the city of Chowchilla. Lead guitarist Justin Webster worked full time construction in the Silicon Valley. Drummer Michael Cheatham was a full time college student. The band now spends the greater amount of their time touring. Driven Cure is a band that cares about the people.
