Smalls proves it is the home of Punk music in Harrisburg with its show Saturday night the 24th of November. It was the first time I have ever been to Smalls, and I am disappointed in myself for not going before. I became very disgusted with the scene in Harrisburg down town in recent years, which is why I started going to York, but now I have found a place that showcases original music in Harrisburg, and I might start saving more gas, various punk icon memorabilia decorates the walls, it has a real late Seventies punk feel about it. Check it out at http://www.myspace.com/smallscapcity .
On this night I went to see Toastersluts, Drink 1r2, and The Machetes and I am so glad I did, at first wasn't feeling very well, and was going to stay home, but the draw of original music took over.
Toastersluts went on first, this was the third time I saw them, this band is just great. It has that old school punk sound and feel, and Smalls was the perfect venue for them. Drew, bassist and vocals, was very excited about playing here, and seeing him on stage with The Sex Pistols poster of "God Save the Queen", behind, it just seemed right. It was very reminiscent of 1977. Larry, guitarist, was a little more laid back then usually, until a little family embarrassment loosened him up, usually Drew and Larry, "The Loon", are banging off of each other, but wasn't enough room on this night. Josey B, the drummer, never fails to anchor this three piece, with high energy and talent. I can boldly say she is the second best female drummer I have ever seen, being Mercedes Lander of KiTTiE, as the first. With songs like "Operation American Dream" and "Swallowing Pills" The Toastersluts, prove they are a new, but classic punk band. Be sure to check them out at http://www.myspace.com/toastersluts .
Next was Drink 1r2, now here was some guys that were my age, but so much more talented then I ever could be. As soon as I saw SuBz, vocals, take the stage wearing a Dead Kennedys tee shirt, my expectations were very high, and I was not disappointed. Drink 1r2, original music was awesome, could definitely hear strong classic punk influences, like Anti-Flag, Descendents, Ramones and Misfits. But what really got me was some of their covers. They had many of the crowd guest singing on the mic, for a lot of tunes. Hell, they were playing this one song, that sounded so familiar to me, but I couldn't remember who it was, until SuBz, let everyone know that it was the Angry Samoans, I can honestly say I have not heard anyone play their songs, in years. The rest of the band is made up by, Equal on guitar, 44 magnum on bass, and Wayne on drums, "Wayne?" what a dumb name...lol. They finished up their set with a special request from the audience, The Dead Milkmen, so fucking cool! Check them out at http://www.myspace.com/drink1r2 .
Next was The Machetes, and yet again they played a flawless performance. These guys are so really original, I find it hard to actually classify them. They have a punk feel about them, with classic country, and a rock-a-billy feel about, remind of some sort of classic early sixties garage, greaser band. Scotty Five-O, on guitar and vocals, along with Glen Charon, guitar, have a Buddy Holly feel about them, and no it's not just because they were glasses, and look like him, but the way they play guitar. Sean Saman, on bass, and his brother Shea Saman on drums, are excellent musicians too, and these four guys have been together for a very long time. They went to school together, and through various times have all been in different bands together at different times. With songs like "Last Train Home" and "Catatonic", there fans sing along. In fact the unsung fifth member of The Machetes, Yaple, joins in with the cow bell, and interpretative dance number, in his short shorts on "Catatonic". Reminds me of Perry Farrell of Jane's Addiction, and his dance number is funny, but disturbing at the same time, but he made a new friend on this night, who chased after him out the door. The Machetes finished up there set with a guest bassist, and old friend who was home for the holidays from the Navy, Jason Deitreich formally of Jaxy and the 357's covering Misfit tunes, all and all one hell of a great performance. Check out The Machetes at http://www.myspace.com/themachetespa .
Remember to support local music, and when you're bitching about paying a cover, think about the fact that that's the money that helps out those bands.

Bio
Drink 1R2 is a punk rock band that plays original music as well as old school covers. Band members include Troy on Vocals, Shawn on Guitar, Dave on Guitar, Greg on Bass, and Wayne on drums. We have been influenced by punk rock from the 70’s and 80’s including bands like, The Descendents, The Misfits, The Dead Kennedy’s and The Ramones just to name a few. We have also been influenced by parody/comedy bands, such as Weird Al Yankovic, Spinal Tap, and D.V.D.A just to name a few. This would explain a lot of our often sick and twisted humor and somewhat angry lyrics backed up by punk rock riffs. We do not define ourselves, however, to a specific sound or lyric content. We write whatever comes to us.
The name of the band was created back in the Summer of 2003 when Troy, Shawn and Greg were drinking at their favorite local bar. They would make up parody lyrics to songs playing on the radio. A popular punk pop band came on and while making up lyrics to the song, Troy mentioned the name of the punk pop band, and then Greg said Drink 1R2. We talked about starting a band in the past and were looking for a name. At this point and time we decided we would start that band and call it Drink 1R2. It was a parody name and it referred to the good time we were having hanging out drinking beer and making up parody lyrics to the popular bands playing on the radio.
We had a band name now but no drummer. Troy would play drums at first just to try and get the band moving along. Troy was not a drummer; he was a vocalist and guitar player. This would turn out to be quite a funny spectacle, but in two or three months he would get good enough on the drums to at least learn some cover songs. Troy could not sing and play drums at the same time. He did try to do it but sounded like a robot. All those limbs moving and singing was overloading his brain. We decided if we were going to take the band farther we needed a drummer. We posted a wanted add on a local radio station web site and along came Wayne. Once Wayne was in place Troy was able to do the vocals the way they were meant to be heard. We were able to learn more covers but ultimately wanted to write our own music. We started writing original music toward the end of 2004.
In 2007 we were asked to open for the I Don’t Cares at The Marysville Tavern. We had enough original music and covers to play 30 minutes. The show was a success which led us to write more original music as well as learn more covers.
In 2008 we wanted to add another guitar player to the band. It would give us the opportunity to make some of our music a little more intricate at times, but still keep it simple sounding. It would also help with some covers we wanted to learn that were two guitar parts. Wayne knew a guy named Dave that was a guitar player and he was interested in trying out for the band. After a few sessions he fit in well and we added him to the band.
We currently play at bars in the Central PA area. We have played with local bands such as, The I Don’t Cares, Paper Tongue, The Machetes, Pariah Piranha, Second Best and Chuggernaut just to name a few. We are always looking for a good time and have been dubbed the “Punk Rock Party Band” by some of our peers. We can play an all original show or a mixed original and cover show. We currently can play well over an hour of original and cover music and about 40 minutes of original music. We are constantly writing more original music as well as learning new covers. An original show, cover show, or both, it does not matter to us; we just want to play music.
