Dreams of University
(Awesomer)
To start, the obvious should be stated: This pop punk/emo nugget was not crafted nor intended for music fans in their thirties (such as yours truly). That's not a weakness; high school students from Burris and Cowan probably shouldn't be crafting albums for people in their thirties.
That said, for a younger set comfortable with Blink-182, All American Rejects, Fallout Boy, etc., Dreams of University captures the immediacy and energy of the genre while putting together a collection of songs of such craftsmanship that it's hard to believe none of these guys -- Logan Zimmerman, Sheldon Watts, Colin Cross, Brett Steadman and Zach Waters -- is old enough to vote.
And that's what makes Dreams of University special: Musically, this disc shows a group mature beyond its years. While many bands of the same genre or age group would probably create a disc with one or two hot tracks -- and the rest of the album filled with tracks that are pale imitations of the two better tracks -- Dreams isn't satisfied with that.
The biggest examples are the two ballads: Answering Machine and .... Many of the emo ilk feel the need to follow the formula, kicking in on the chorus with the entire band or switching from soft acoustic to loud distortion. Dreams of University reigns in those impulses, instead bringing in Elisabeth Ohly-Davis to play viola on Answering Machine and riding Steadman's gentle piano on .... It really makes the tracks stand out, both among the songs on the disc and compared to similar X103 fare.
When they turn it up and kick the pedals, Dreams holds up well again. Liar, You'll Never Know and Rest in Pieces all have some pulse-racing appeal.
Is the album brilliant or perfect? No. But the fellows from Dreams have set the bar pretty high on their first effort and establish themselves as a band with a future.
Standout tracks: Answering Machine, You'll Never Know, Rest in Pieces
