Back in March we caught Israeli/Canadian songstress Dorine Levy play a riveting set to an unsuspecting SXSW audience. It was still early in the day but her electro-pop vibes and crystalline vocals rose far above the collective hangovers and general festival burnout.
We have been keeping our eyes on her progress and were delighted when she released the single for the track “There For Me” last month. The video stars Israeli Actress/Model Hen Yanni and is the perfect visual soulmate for the track’s carefree spirit.
“There For Me” is the first taste from Dorine’s upcoming ‘Underwater‘ album which promises to build on all the great potential she has been showing so far.

Super Vixen from Tel-Aviv: An interview with Dorine Levy
In the build-up to the October release of her self-produced debut LP ‘Underwater’, French-Canadian super vixen Dorine Levy has released ‘There for Me’, a syrupy taster of what’s in store for her blossoming fan base. After spotlight grabbing appearances at the MTV Australia awards, SXSW 2013 and Indie Week Canada to name but a few, it’s hardly any wonder what the fuss is all about!
Raised miles away from all she held dear in Tel Aviv, Dorine found that she pined most for her brother’s vinyl collection! After serving in military school she found a sonic catalyst in fashion and she was off to music school before she knew it! After finding Eitan, her one-man muse, she released a few tracks that ultimately failed to flourish... and here we find ourselves.
You can watch her video below and believe me, with Israeli modelling actress Hen Yanni in the frame, you won’t regret it! But for those who prioritise substance over sexy, perhaps you’d like to learn a little more about Dorine herself; she kindly took the time to answer a few questions for you good folk, so I hope you enjoy this cheeky glimpse beyond Dorine's lovely bubble-gum exterior!
AS: Is bedtime more half nine with a half read paper or more half four with fully red eyes?
DL: Half four with fully red eyes… absolutely! I go to sleep very late; the earliest is around 2am and if I'm writing I can stay in the studio much later. In my experience the best songs come at 4am.
AS: Where do you go when it all gets too much?
DL: I go straight to my studio, open a new project on Cubase and start a new track; after 3 hours I come back out, usually feeling much better and with a new track!
AS: What’s the best / your favourite music video?
DL: I've been in love with Fever Ray's 'When I Grow Up' music video for a year now; it's mysterious and edited perfectly with the vibe of the song.
AS: If you were a musical instrument what would you be?
DL: Good question. I think a Piano ‘cause its dynamic and you have to tune it every once in a while!
AS: What’s ‘love at first sight’ all about then?
DL: I really don't know because I never had it; I believe in process.
AS: Where do you draw your inspiration from?
DL: Everything really. A new sound, a new plugin, a new beat I heard and liked; my friends, my heartbreaks, my mom…
AS: Where do you most enjoy playing live?
DL: Everywhere! I especially enjoyed playing at SXSW this year.
AS: When do you plan to take over the world?
DL: When I lose my mind! Why would I want to do that?
AS: What changes can we expect with your latest outing?
DL: The tracks on my debut album 'Underwater' were made in a very unique way for me. They were written and recorded at the same time; I wrote them directly on the computer. I was in a very unconscious mode, just writing a song a day in a 4 week period. I couldn’t do anything else at that time.
Some months later I realised that these songs would be my debut album. It seemed right to leave the tracks as ‘virginal’ as possible, leaving the vocals as they were recorded while I was writing them. So the album feels really fluent with lots of layers, electronic beats and keys; the vocals are raw and add an edge to each track.
AS: Who were your heroes as a teenager?
DL: I had so many. I loved Depeche Mode and Pink Floyd because of my big brother who was listening to them. Also, Fiona Apple and Tori Amos; I loved the nuances in their voices. Guns and Roses and Metallica and even Aaliyah… then later it was all the grunge coming out from Seattle, so Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and Mad Season etc…
AS: Do you enjoy playing live or are you more at home in a studio?
DL: When I have a good show I enjoy it very much, but when I don't I can really suffer. I can honestly say that I am still trying to find my place on stage, but in the studio I swim like a fish!
AS: What’s been the highlight of your year?
DL: There have been lots of highlights this year, so it’s hard to mention just one. Lots of shows including the aforementioned SXSW were great. Meeting new people and friends and finishing the recording was great too. I'm happy to release the first music video for the opening track of the album; I’m really excited about this one!
AS: Any forthcoming plans?
DL: Touring in the US and Canada. I need a booking agent; do you know someone?!
AS: Are you unlucky in love and if so, why?
DL: No, I’m lucky.
AS: What’s the best ever song, movie or album?
DL: 'Let Down' by Radiohead from their ‘OK Computer’ album.
AS: Where did you sleep last night?
DL: At home in bed with my love and my cat.
AS: Which instrument does it for you most?
DL: Everything! But oriental instruments like the oud have appealed to me lately.

Dorine Levy, an indie pop artist from Tel Aviv, Israel, performed alongside her husband, Eitan Shapira (percussionist), at our showcase in Austin during SXSW. The duo performed songs from Levy’s forthcoming album, Underwater, as well as a few older tunes. Although performing without their usual bassist and guitarist, the duo was still able to keep the crowd moving with the assistance of digital instruments, such as an electronic drum pad and synthesizer. Dorine Levy’s music is best described as dance pop with an edge. Her musical inspirations stem from ‘90s hip-hop and rap, as well as grunge and a side of Pink Floyd.
Although Levy’s songs are sung in English, her first language was French. She grew up in Montreal, Canada, but moved to Israel in her early teen years. Like any emotionally unbalanced teen, Levy needed to find a way to dull the pain from leaving behind everything she once knew. Using music as her outlet, Levy began writing songs, but did not immediately perform them in front of an audience.
“I was always singing and admiring music, but I used to be a shy person; I couldn’t sing in front of people,” said Levy. “I was writing songs a bit on the guitar, but I would never admit that I wanted to make music.”
Levy pursued other passions, such as fashion. But a year after attending fashion school, she quickly realized that her true passion was music. “Everything that I made was [somehow] connected to music,” she said. “All the professors would tell me that I made such musical pieces.” With that, Levy decided to follow her heart. She enrolled in a music school in Tel Aviv, where fate decided to show its face again by introducing her to Shapira.
Performing songs in English in a country where Hebrew is the dominant language was a bit difficult at first. But recently, Levy has noticed a change in musicians braving the Hebrew-speaking crowd by performing songs in other languages. She is grateful at how open-minded Israelis are. Levy believes the Internet has not only made music global, but that it has also made people more willing to accept new sounds.

Levy is currently working on her first full-length album, Underwater, which is to be released late this summer. She will be releasing a few singles, as well as a music video for “There For Me” ahead of the album. Visit her website at www.DorineLevy.com to stay up-to-date.
And as always, I couldn’t leave out our signature question, “Sweet tea or pumpkin pie?” Levy’s response: “[Although] I’ve never had it before (because we don’t have it in Israel), Pumpkin pie.” - BY STEPHANIE LANHAM -for Sweet tea pumkinpie

Dorine Levy Debuts “Salvation” Music Video
Dorine Levy has premiered the music video for her single “Salvation.”
Born in Israel, Dorine followed her family and moved to Canada when she was only 6 years old. After 8 years spent living in Montreal, Dorine’s parents decided to move back to Israel, and so they all did. At first, Dorine had difficulties to become accustomed to the life in Israel; she had to learn a new language and a whole way of living. Going through these difficult times, like many teens of her age often do, Dorine turned to music for comfort. Quickly started playing the guitar and writing original her own songs.
The result of her upbringing is the new single “Salvation,” taken from Levy’s forthcoming as-yet untitled debut album. The album, which features mixing from Yoad Nevo, whose work can be heard on best-selling, critically-acclaimed releases by the likes of Bryan Adams, Pet Shop Boys, Sugababes, Air, Goldfrapp, The Bangles, Girls Aloud and Dandy Warhols, will be released later this year. - allure of sound

Exclusive interview with Israeli pop sensation Dorine Levi Leave a comment »
Today I sat down with Israeli pop sensation Dorine Levy, who was nominated for the 2010 Music Oz Awards and also played Canadian Indie Week in 2011. Welcome to Independent Music Promotions, Dorine Levy. Your music video for “Salvation” has some beautifully dark imagery. Please tell us about the lyrical content and the themes you want to project.
Well I wrote this song inspired by a conversation I had with one of my friends about Israel’s Memorial Day, and the rituals we are born into, and sometimes accept them without really asking ourselves how we feel about them. The video contains Overlapping images of different cultural traditions and rituals we embrace, that we believe in or that ‘may’ give us salvation” , like drugs, religions, extremes, politicians, etc… flash across my face as I stands centered in the frame. Though the word means an infinite number of things to an infinite number of people, part of me found salvation in music, another part in relationships with others, with myself and with what I do.
Do you have any new or recent releases?
I’m releasing a brand new EP Including the song ‘Salvation’, the first single is called ‘You have a perfect name’ (cow boy fest) , I shot a video for it as well. with my dear friend Pavel Bolo.
How have you found the music scene in Israel? Are they supportive of their local artists?
The music scene here is amazing, because Israel is populated from immigrants from all over the world, there’s lots of influences, you can here ethnic music and also very contemporary on the radio. I just talked with a friend which is a musician in France, and he told me how they support their artist, by paying them monthly on days they don’t ‘work’ , here it’s far from that, so I guess we have some way to go.
Who in music today do you most admire most and why?
Lately I’ve been listening to Bon Iver; he touches my heart.
Do you have any advice for independent musicians who may feel disillusioned or discouraged at times?
I guess It’s common to feel discouraged. Stick to the truth; the times I do it helps.

Dorine Levy is a wonderful singer who shows off her beautiful voice in her YouTube music video entitled Salvation. Originally from Tel Aviv, the 2nd biggest city in Israel, Dorine was nominated in the top 5 for best International artist in 2010 Australia Music Oz awards.

This video features Dorine Levy with few different looks. I personally liked the black veil she wore the indian head dress. You can see it in the right in the middle of the video. Pavel Boli did a great job directing this video while he blends in some transparent scenes without interupting Dorine’s presence on the screen.
You can find Dorine Levy on her facebook page facebook.com/DorineLevymusic and if you like her music like we do, then make sure you subscribe. It’s easy with the instant subscribe button right below.

Fresh Music Fridays: Dorine Levy
Israeli-born singer, Dorine Levy, debuted her new track titled, Salvation. This single comes off of her untitled album due out later this year. I love the feel of the music video and how the black & white film contrasts with the lyrics, inspired by Radiohead’s In Rainbows.
I’m sure we haven’t seen the last of Dorine Levy. - thestantonmagazine

NEW MUSIC REVIEW: DORINE LEVY - "SALVATION"
Hey Superstars!
Today at Cats Recording Studios - The Blog we review an international indie -pop artist by the name of Dorine Levy - a multi-talented singer, songwriter and producer who is all about being different and delivering key messages through her self-penned, self-produced music.
Dorine Levy's current single 'Salvation' was written, composed and produced by Dorine herself and is inspired by Israel's Memorial Day. When asked why she wrote the track Dorine says: “It’s a day of remembrance of soldiers who lost their lives during their military service.” .
We love the universal message that is spread through 'Salvation' and although the song alone took us a few plays to get into, it DEFINITELY grew on us. This was, we think, directly owing to the journey of discovery that you go through when watching the unusual and refreshingly unique video for the song. As a whole - once we had watched the minimalistic black and white video, had taken in the lyrics completely and had seen just how much creative effort went into the whole project - we gave the whole thing a thumbs up!
In the video you see overlapping images flashing across the very beautiful, 'model-like' face of Dorine Levy. There are many controversial images coming up throughout the video including images of politicians, the working class, drugs and fighting scenes. The words and images featured in the song and the video will mean an infinite number of things to an infinite number of people; and it is clear to us that this artist has found her form of salvation in music.
Dorine's influences include Pink Floyd, Depeche Mode, Jimi Hendrix, Duran Duran, Bob Marley, Telephone and many more. Her highly anticipated debut full length album will be preceded by her forthcoming EP, including a very unique take on the Spin Doctors' hit "two princes", accompanied by a video clip that was well received all over the world.

Bio
You will not soon forget the day when heard the name Dorine Levy- already on the lips of industry taste makers, bloggers, and festival programmers, Levy has quite possibly put together the perfect 12 song LP entitled Underwater;
Born in Canada, brought up predominantly in Israel, and with the past year spent touring one end of the world to the other; it serves as no surprise that Dorine Levy’s new single ‘Lenyrose’ is an overflowing amalgamation of sonic bliss. Taken from the self-produced debut album ‘Underwater’, the stunningly produced record opens to a use of reverse and delay effected guitars that wouldn’t sound out of place on The National’s records. The track is, at the crux, a stupendous crescendo of epic proportions, not too far displaced from the likes of Explosions in The Sky, Mogwai or Sigur Ros; the vocal reminiscent of Jonsi, though with the charisma and charm of a very prevalently influential Bjork making itself known.
Now in her prime; years ago Dorine first cut her teeth at the ripe young age of 16 years when she produced/performed on the lead single for the ambient 'Nine Beach' compilation with a song entitled- “La Mort”, selling over 50,000 units world wide. Her 2008 debut EP soon followed with the track "Falling Star" which was picked up by international fashion brands including, H&M, Zara, River Island, etc. for national campaigns; and in turn got Dorine Levy selected as the 'top 5 International acts' category at the Australian Music Awards (MTV Australia) in 2010.. An incredible accolade, especially since she had never had set foot in the continent before.
It is this much sought after intelligent take on indie-pop that has resulted in Levy’s remarkable success that now finds itself stretched over multiple continents, and has been the cause of a series of highly anticipated industry showcases at the likes of SXSW, CMJ, Indie Week Canada, Canadian Music Week, Sound City and Jamrock. Dorine Levy has produced a record with a great deal of substance that isn’t about to fall into the landfill of guitar bands keen to berate anything but themselves for the failure of any sustained success.
If you haven't experienced pure indie pop splendor, called Dorine Levy, you ought to...she brings it in spades~
