Of the 12 DJs left in the mix Brace isn’t the flashiest — that distinction goes to Japan’s DJ Buruaaaa. Nor does he stoop to the level of DJ Throwdown who devotes most of his video to finding new and cocky ways to tell his fellow competitors to fellate him via samples. But in terms of pure musicality, Canada’s Brace seems like a clear frontrunner. If he does come out on top, it will be far from the first competition of its kind he’s won.

Synesthasia est le dernier projet de l’Electric Nosehair Orchestra que pilote DJ Brace, un Montréalais qui commence à tourner de par le monde. Révélation du Montréal Électronique Groove, l’été dernier , DJ Brace lancera son album le 2 décembre prochain au Voodoo Lounge de New York – avec le soutien du MEG. À son tour, le Montréalais a créé un monde d’hybridations issus de la tradition hip hop mais aussi de plusieurs traditions instrumentales modernes. Le concept de Nostmania et sa suite Synesthasia, peut-on lire sur le site officiel de DJ Brace, repose sur l’idée suivante: le son peut révéler ce qui se trouve enfoui dans les mémoires. Le son participe d’un fil qui raccorde les sens, la couleur et le parfum, le goût, etc. Dans cette optique, Brace travaille avec des artistes visuels afin de créer une relation créative son-images. Par ailleurs, il collabore avec des artistes du label ESL – Ancien Astronauts et the Brown Bag All Stars.

SynesthASIA is the latest project of the Electric Orchestra Nosehair a pilot DJ Brace, a Montrealer who is beginning to turn around the world. Revelation of the Montreal Electronic Groove, last summer, DJ Brace will launch its next album on December 2 at Voodoo Lounge in New York - with the support of MEG. Scratcher recognized, respected mix, it was Canadian champion in the famous DMC competition in 2004, he finished second in the Scribble Jam this year. Brace has a long way since then, because his Electric Nosehair Orchestra won a Juno Award in 2009, category "Instrumental music" for the album Nostomania published in 2008.

This dedication has led Brace to launch his own label (Nostomania Records).

Some describe him as DJ Shadow Montreal. The image is certainly simplistic, it nevertheless illustrates the allegiance of the Brace DJïsme refined and traditional hip hop with several players were spotted in the years 95-05 - Ninja Tune example. In turn, the Montrealer has created a world of hybrids from the traditional hip hop but also several modern instrumental traditions. Certainly, it is perfectly capable of taking us on a trip! Moreover, its mix of original samples include banjo (TJ Blair), piano (The Annam), doumbek (Ernest Flow) or voice (Laurence Lafond Beaulne).

The concept and its sequel Nostmania SynesthASIA, can be read on the official website of DJ Brace, based on the following idea: the sound may reveal what lies buried in the memories. The sound part of a wire that connects the senses, color and scent, taste, etc.. In this context, Brace works with visual artists to create a creative sound-image relationship. Firstly, tell us a little bit about yourself and your background?

Music has been part of my life since I was about 11 years old, performing in bands, writing songs, etc.

I started scratching in 98, and when DMC came to my old local town of Winnipeg, I treated it like I treated skateboarding competitions - just compete for the sake of playing on the terrain for the day. I took it as far as representing Canada in the 2004 DMC world finals. - Serato

Whether sampling from vinyl, live instruments, or the outdoors, one must pay special attention to small factors like volume of input gain on your sampling device, ensuring your cables do not emit noise, minimizing buzz from instruments such as guitars, wind (especially when sampling whistling), and more.
What we have to keep in mind is that once you sample your sound, it’s finalized – like a picture after it’s taken. We can always try our best to “Photoshop” out undesirable sounds or frequencies; however, just as in Photoshop, things stick out if you don’t edit them properly and, moreover, these types of edits can take hours. The goal when sampling is to do it correctly the first time. This helps to avoid any extra work and offers the purest sound source.
Some of these suggestions will seem obvious to even amateur producers, but I will cover the basics and more. Paying attention to these suggestions will help you avoid problems that might only come to light when you’re completing your song. - Canadian Musician

Rencontré à la fin d’une année chargée de collaborations et de festivals (dont le Printemps de Bourges), le platiniste montréalais DJ Brace explique l’ambitieuse trilogie qu’il s’apprête à terminer et nous parle de son label, Nostomania Records.

L’antre de DJ Brace est peuplé d’équipements que le commun des mortels ne saurait pas forcément utiliser, de disques recueillis au fil des voyages et de plusieurs instruments de musique. « Ici, j’ai ce qu’il me faut pour faire tout ce que je veux. C’est comme un laboratoire… Même quand je passe des journées entières à travailler en continu, la concentration reste présente parce que ce sont des choses que j’adore faire », raconte l’artiste né à Winnipeg (Manitoba). Au moment de notre rencontre, il arrive d’un séjour en Israël et nous fait écouter les nouveaux albums vinyles qu’il collectionne, « du funk du Moyen-Orient ». C’est clairement un terrain de jeu qu’il trépigne de joie à l’idée d’explorer bientôt.

Très productif et polyvalent, Brace participe régulièrement aux projets musicaux de plusieurs artistes internationaux. Il porte plusieurs chapeaux à la fois, dont DJ et producteur. Musicien depuis le plus jeune âge, il maîtrise plusieurs instruments, ce qui a un impact considérable sur l’architecture de sa musique électronique. Il parle anglais, hébreu et maintenant français, depuis qu’il a choisi d’élire domicile à Montréal en 2007. « Ça faisait quelques années que je voulais m’installer à Montréal, depuis ma venue en 2003 pour un concours de DJ. Faute de pouvoir travailler en Europe ou aux États-Unis, je trouvais que c’était la meilleure ville au Canada pour poursuivre mon travail, et Montréal jusqu’à maintenant permis de très belles rencontres », estime le jeune trentenaire, que nous avons notamment pu entendre à MUTEK, au Festival MEG et au Festival de musique émergente cette année.

La trilogie Electric Nosehair Orchestra

Même si Brace a joué dans plusieurs groupes pendant sa jeunesse, c’est vers l’âge de 18 ans, quand il a eu le coup de foudre pour le hip-hop et s’est mis à apprivoiser les platines, que tout a vraiment commencé. Un apprentissage qui a porté ses fruits, puisqu’en 2004, il a remporté le concours DMC Canadian Championship et s’est classé au 8e rang mondial. « J’ai bien aimé être dans des groupes de musique, se souvient-il, mais je préfère vraiment le travail solitaire. D’ailleurs, tous les DJ-producteurs que j’admire le plus sont des “one man band”, qui ont su développer leur propre style… »

Paru en 2008, le premier disque solo de Brace, « The Electric Nosehair Orchestra in Nostomania », a reçu le prix Juno du meilleur album instrumental canadien. Ce qui était aussi la première manifestation de l’« orchestre virtuel » de DJ Brace, Electric Nosehair (« poil de nez électrique »!), était le début d’une série conceptuelle de trois parutions. Une idée née d’une expérience créative très particulière réalisée en 2006 : « J’étais dans la cuisine avec mon mentor de flûte, un sexagénaire. On se réunissait régulièrement pour jouer en duo, et ce jour-là il m’a dit qu’il aimait ce qu’on faisait ensemble, mais qu’il ne comprenait pas tellement ce que je faisais avec les tables tournantes et en quoi ça pouvait être considéré comme de la musique. » Brace a donc eu l’idée d’enregistrer chaque jour pendant une semaine des extraits de la musique qu’ils jouaient ensemble et de s’en servir pour créer quelque chose de nouveau. « Le lendemain, je lui faisais toujours écouter ce que j’avais construit avec nos enregistrements. Le troisième jour, il a été abasourdi et je pense qu’il a commencé à comprendre mon travail de création et la musique dans tout ça. »

Ce projet maison a marqué une étape importante dans le travail du DJ, qui avait pendant longtemps mis de côté les instruments pour travailler uniquement à partir d’échantillons de disques. « Tous les instruments que j’avais appris devenaient interconnectés, je commençais à peine à voir toutes les possibilités, explique-t-il. La trilogie a commencé avec Nostomania, qui signifie l’urgence incontrôlable de retourner chez soi, ce qui avait une grande signification pour moi à cette époque. J’écrivais des chansons qui me rappelaient mon enfance… Mais en réalité, le titre renvoie surtout au fait que chacun a sa propre façon de « retourner à la maison ». »

Après ce premier album, qu’il perçoit comme « plus traditionnel », est venu « The Electric Nosehair Orchestra in Synesthasia » (2010), dont le titre renvoie au phénomène neurologique de la synesthésie; l’association de deux ou de plusieurs sens. « Ce deuxième volet est plus orienté sur les rythmes et plus hip-hop dans sa sonorité, même si je considère que tout ce que je fais est d’une certaine façon hip-hop. Il renvoie à la manière dont nous utilisons nos sens et ça m’intéresse beaucoup parce que quand j’entends un rythme ou une chanson, j’imagine souvent une couleur qui correspond. »

D’où l’importance du visuel dans la trilogie de Brace, qui a sollicité la collaboration d’artistes visuels pour le livret : chaque piste est associée à une illustration précise. Toutes sont numérotées, mais leur créateur a préféré ne pas leur donner de titre spécifique : « Le titre d’une chanson donne une idée préconçue d’elle. Je voulais que ce soient les artistes visuels qui « donnent un nom » à la chanson à leur manière. Et après, celui qui l’écoute est forcé de créer son propre rapport à l’œuvre, car rien d’autre ne lui est fourni. »

En ce moment, malgré la quantité de projets parallèles sur lesquels il travaille (dont une collaboration avec l’artiste allemand Kabanjak, Brace a commencé à réfléchir au troisième et dernier tome de sa trilogie entamée en 2008. « Je sais qu’il est temps, et j’ai déjà une chanson qui est presque prête. Je connais l’histoire du troisième disque, mais je réfléchis encore à comment la formuler. Ça fera référence à un état qui est libre de toute émotion… Je compte bien replonger intensivement dans le studio pour développer cela en 2012. » Après « Nostomania » et « Synesthasia », ce serait donc « Apatheia » qui devrait voir le jour…

Nostomania Records

Entre les albums « Nostomania » et « Synesthasia », Brace a aussi trouvé le temps de créer son propre label, Nostomania Records, en 2009. C’est « Everyday », avec les New-yorkais Brown Bag Allstars qui a démarré l’aventure, un disque hip-hop qui contient un remix fait par les Allemands Ancient Astronauts sur sa face B. « J’ai commencé le label seul. Je n’avais pas beaucoup de moyens, mais je voulais absolument le faire. J’étais tellement content quand j’ai tenu ce disque dans ma main pour la première fois! », s’exclame-t-il, en pointant la jaquette du premier disque de son label.

« Je ne voulais pas me servir de Nostomania Records juste pour mes albums, je tenais à intégrer d’autres projets. » Ainsi ont suivi des projets électro, rap et même folk avec les artistes Birdapres, Morbin et Cella Chest. « Même si le style de musique est très différent, le lien entre ces musiques est qu’elles me passionnent, et que ces gens sont comme de la famille pour moi. Ils croient beaucoup en ce qu’ils font, et moi aussi. »

Depuis, Brace s’est entouré de collaborateurs-amis pour le design, l’écriture, l’aide à la direction artistique, etc. « Pas évident de tout faire seul : la comptabilité, la direction, le travail sur mes projets solos, les collaborations, les « beats » et les « scratchs » pour d’autres artistes, la promo. Mais la vie est trop courte… Faut faire ce que l’on aime, non? »

Prochaines parutions de Nostomania Records : Koncept (« Watch The Skyfall EP », avec Royce da 5’9 et des remix par DJ Brace), DJ Mana, DJ Offset, The Fathers (T.J. Blair et Brace), Morbin et Cella Chest.

À surveiller également en 2012 : Le dernier tome de la trilogie Electric Nosehair Orchestra (sur Nostomania Records) et la collaboration entre Brace et Kabanjak (sur Switchstance Records).

The group launch a double CD, Brown Bag Season Vol. 1, Monday at Divan Orange. More a collection than a proper debut, the project compiles tracks previously released online on the band’s com­prehensive blog, with newer, yet-unheard material. The whole package is remixed on disc two by DJ Brace, a Winnipeg native who currently calls Montreal home. Brace won the 2009 Juno for best instrumental album, and this entire project is coming out on his own label, Nostomania.

“Brace did a remix for a track called ‘Got it All,’” J57 says. Internet feedback was immediately encouraging, and he approached the producer to get involved in a bigger-picture project, ran­domly stipulating a three-week deadline.

“He laughed…Dude, he was like, ‘Three weeks? No way!’ He locked himself in the studio for three weeks and fucking killed it, made a crazy, crazy remix album. And ever since then, well, it took a lot longer than three weeks obviously. But the idea that he actually was able to literally be in the studio for three weeks straight without hardly leaving it all, that’s just the work ethic that we have as well.”

Khan credits each member’s individuality as artists for the group’s collective character, underscoring the importance of varied production elements as much as diverse lyricism. “A lot of the quote-unquote back-to-basics, orthodox hip hop shit is starting to sound generic. And a lot of the forward-thinking shit, I guess you would say the progressive hip hop sound, is so out there. And the mainstream stuff is just big and empty. So we’re trying to find a middle ground, trying to find our niche. And you can listen to one of our songs and say, ‘That is a Brown Bag track.’” ¦

Even those who bust the most ass to get what they want out of life try to take Sunday evenings off. DJ Brace, a Juno-winning instrumental hip hop producer, national DMC champ, devoted label owner and all-out indie-hustle ace, instead takes his place behind the decks at Laïka, week to week. “I play what I wanna play!” Brace, 31, enthuses fondly. “The hip hop DJs in the 70s and 80s, before there was tons of hip hop records, what did they play? They played a mix of electro records and funk and breaks, and whatever they could. That was what a hip hop DJ was. “Now that we have hip hop records everywhere, that’s what a hip hop DJ is?” he demands rhetorically. “No! A hip hop DJ has a mix of all types of music. Because I’m a hip hop head, I look for a cer­tain type of rhythm, and that’s what I play.” One could say Brace was raised by the sample. Surrounded by sounds, he spent his early childhood in Israel, moved to Winnipeg in the late 80s but soon relocated again to Manhattan, where an early intrigue with hip hop music blossomed to full-blown love.

“I remember one day my stepbrother brought home the soundtrack to Juice, and I heard [Eric B & Rakim’s] ‘Know the Ledge,’ and that was it, it was over. I had to be a part of it,” he affirms.

Picking up the guitar at age nine, Brace made his first moves in musicianship as a teen, with hardcore punk bands in NYC and then back in Winnipeg, where he eventually settled to pursue uni­versity studies. Through it all, he remained an avid skater, competing often for the mere opportunity to skate crazy halfpipes and be down with the culture.

Acquiring his starter decks at 16, Brace learned to scratch, entirely unaware of the art of beat juggling until a friend showed him late-90s DMC competition videos. Having dabbled fruitlessly in graf, b­boying and lyricism, he knew he had found his true craft. He got his first 1200s in 2000, two months before entering Winnipeg’s DMC eliminations—where he ranked second—for kicks. He won the provincial and national titles four years later.

“It was learning tricks, just like skateboarding. It was easy for me to apply the same sort of style of learning from skating to music,” he reflects. Music critics are quick to champion a DIY work ethic, but speaking to Brace, one realizes that the artist has essentially willed himself toward often unexpected but never unearned success.

The multi-instrumentalist’s solo debut, The Electric Nosehair Orchestra: In Nostomania, won him a Juno in 2009, and its second movement, the recent Synesthesia, is among the finer examples of sample-and-scratch-driven hip hop orchestration so far this decade. His label, Nostomania, recently released the critically acclaimed double LP by NYC’s Brown Bag AllStars. A relationship with Thievery Corporation’s ESL label, remix work and gigs across the globe are simply a day’s work.

“I’m not always trying to be the best, but I’m always really working to try to be upper echelon, because of course it means a lot to me, the reactions that the people have,” Brace emphasizes. “All this is really good to me. I have an outlet for all of the different stuff that I’ve always wanted to do.” ¦
