The members of Dirtywings have a burning desire to take over the world of pop music.
Self-confessed ‘junk food junkies’, the band describe their music as “indie-pop earcandy with a rock/electro edge”.
The Dirtywings journey began back in 2003, when singer Bec was 16. At this age, she bought her first guitar and started to write her own songs under the name ‘Dirtywings’. During her studies of Popular Music Production at the Gold Coast’s Griffith University, Bec met Ross and the two clicked musically. In 2008 came Luke. Last but not least, Ben joined the group just this year. After recently replacing their lead guitarist Paul, the band is welcoming a fresh start with newcomer Jay Wedge.
The band has set up a home studio where they can experiment together with keyboards, synths and song ideas. Their foray into production has so far yielded ten tracks, all developed to radio-quality perfection.
With many more songs in their catalogue, Dirtywings are seeking the support and guidance of a label to release their first album and help them reach the level of success they dream of.
ACHIEVEMENTS
Over the past several months, Dirtywings have gigged at prominent Gold Coast venues such as Fisherman’s Wharf, The Cavern, The Sound Lounge and The Swell Tavern, and achieved support slots for successful local bands The Red Paintings and Big Book Fantasy. Bec was recently asked to be a guest judge for the Global Battle of the Bands (GBOB) at Surfers Paradise’s Hard Rock Café.
Even without an album release, in the space of few months the group has already earned a string of accolades for their recordings. ’When My Body Dies’ has been shortlisted in the Contemporary Pop category of the Australian Songwriting Association Songwriting Contest. ‘Gingerbread’ was selected for inclusion on the upcoming film ‘Rotkäppchen: Blood of Red Riding Hood’, and will be featured on the movie’s soundtrack. ‘Gingerbread’ also recently hit #1 overall on the Australian Triple J Unearthed Chart, with ‘When My Body Dies’ reaching #2 and ‘Superglue Myself’ attaining #1 on the Pop chart. Three of the band’s songs have achieved airplay on Brisbane's 4zzz radio station, and ‘Gingerbread’ has been played on international online radio station Anarchist Radio.
