The Los Angeles folk-rock group known as Desert Sparrow have released their latest EP, “City of Dreams.” The album contains three original tracks for an approximate total listening time of 15 minutes. It has been proudly published as an independent release outside the direction of the corporate music industry. Sonorous, rural, and with roots wrapped deep in the rock 'n' roll tradition, “City of Dreams” from Desert Sparrow is an EP sure to resonate with fans of many music genres.
Hailing originally from Sydney, Australia, Desert Sparrow cite as main artistic influences '60s rock, folk music, spaghetti westerns, and surf rock. The resulting amalgam is a rhythmic, highly narrative experience which paints images of solitude and hardship, independence and perseverance on backgrounds of hardpan deserts and windswept plains. Their sound often recalls moments from groups like Fleetwood Mac, Kings of Leon, and Angus & Julia Stone.
Desert Sparrow write that their new album chiefly describes “Moving to the big city to follow your dreams and the hardships that follow.” They also note that it's about “accepting change, walking away from the bad and embracing the good,” as well as “cutting ties with old friends, moving forward, and taking risks.”
Desert Sparrow are Kylie Adams and Dave Carreno. Also appearing on their new record is guitarist Robo Hryn. Their “City of Dreams” EP is preceded by their 2014 EP, “Leave this Town,” the popularity of which preempted the group's move from Australia to Los Angeles.
Desert Sparrow's self-produced EP was engineered at Station House Studio in Echo Park, CA by Mark Rains (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Shooter Jennings) and mastered at Sterling Sound, NY by Greg Calbi (Tame Impala, The War on Drugs, Kurt Vile, Noel Gallagher, Keith Richards). It features cover art and photography by Ian Maddox.
“City of Dreams” by Desert Sparrow is available at over 700 music stores online worldwide beginning 24 June 2016.

Desert Sparrow live on April 23rd for Emergenza Festival Australia!
From a lost bet to the stage of the Lair... they kept fighting for the things they love... they're Desert Sparrow from Sydney!
The interview with Desert Sparrow from Sydney, live @The Lair @ Metro Theatre on Thursday, April 23rd for Emergenza Festival Australia:
LET'S TALK ABOUT THE ORIGIN OF YOUR BAND: WHEN WAS IT BORN AND HOW?
Back in 2013 after losing a bet to a friend, we were forced to play open mic at the local pub. We never performed live in front of an audience before, but the initial rush and adrenaline became so addicting that we kept going back each week. Then we started writing our own songs in 2014 and recorded an EP several months later. Now here we are.
WHAT ARE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?
The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Oasis, and BRMC are the most important bands that matter to Dave. Kylie loves everything Fleetwood Mac and Angus & Julia Stone.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? TALK US ABOUT THE PECULIARITIES OF YOUR MUSIC!
Folk rock. For us, simplicity is key. Someone once told us, "Don't bore us, get to the chorus!" We do what works best for us: 3 chords, tambourine, and a voice.
IS THERE A SONG THAT IS SPECIAL FOR YOU? IF SO, WHICH ONE AND WHY?
"City of Dreams" was written one night in Los Angeles after having a horrific week that kept spiraling downward. We nearly lost faith in humanity and the only thing we could do was write about it. It's a song about never losing focus on what's important in life and to keep fighting for the things you love.
ON AVERAGE, HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU SPEND PLAYING AND HOW CAN YOU BALANCE THIS WITH YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE?
We practice everyday. Some people go straight to the gym or beach after work, we go to our rehearsal space. People will often say that they never have the "time" to do the things they love, but we have friends who get up at 5am every morning to go for a surf before work. If you want something bad enough, you can always make it work.
HOW DID YOU KNOW ABOUT EMERGENZA FESTIVAL AND WHY YOU DECIDED TO TAKE PART IN IT?
Francesca from Emergenza contacted us. We saw the opportunity and jumped on it immediately.
DOES THE COMPETITION WITH OTHER BANDS WORRY YOU OR GIVE YOU ENERGY?
Music is too personal and sacred to be solely judged by others in a competitive manner. The only competitive aspect should be with yourself and playing to your best ability. We see this as an opportunity to push ourselves, write more songs, and just have fun with it. Whether or not people like it, that's completely up to them.
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM EMERGENZA AND HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR FIRST EMERGENZA CONCERT?
We're super excited to see the other bands, make new friends, catch up with old ones and enjoy the ride! - Emergenza Australia
The indie music duo known as Desert Sparrow have released their debut EP record, “Leave This Town.” The record comprises four original tracks for an approximate total listening time of 18 minutes. It has been proudly published as an independent release entirely without support of the corporate music infrastructure. A seamless blend of contemporary folk and old-fashioned, bluesy rock 'n' roll, “Leave This Town” is a raw and unadulterated serving of sound any music fan can get behind.
The heart and soul of Desert Sparrow are Kylie Adams and David Carreno. They cite as main artistic influences Fleetwood Mac, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Kings of Leon, and Angus and Julia Stone. This list of legendary groups does not add up to a round understanding of the Desert Sparrow style, however. Desert Sparrow are natural musicians in the truest sense of the word. Their undeniably great vocals and refreshingly tasteful instrumentation are merely ancillary qualities, the proverbial icing on the cake in light of startlingly solid songwriting that is (literally) packaged for play on public radio around the world.
The sense of Desert Sparrow simply going outside to enjoy themselves with a song or two and incidentally making a four-star album is palpable. This unassuming goodness is also reinforced by a characteristic humility that can't help but distinguish them in the land of competition that is Los Angeles. Asked to describe their start in music, this modesty is plain to see.
They write that they began by attending “Singer-songwriter nights for fun. Everybody around us kept hassling us saying that we needed to give the music business a shot.”
Asked to describe the underlying message of their first official album, Desert Sparrow explains that “The main theme of the EP is believing in your dreams. Don't let anything or anyone get you down. Get out there and make it happen. Don't conform because it's easy, be true to yourself.”
“Leave This Town” by Desert Sparrow is available online worldwide.

Bio
Desert Sparrow are a Los Angeles-based folk-rock band hailing from Sydney, Australia. Kylie Adams and Dave Carreno began their musical journey together by playing covers at local open mic nights in early 2013 before forming their own creative path into songwriting. Their foot-stomping, tambourine-beating, bluesy guitar riffs and acoustic folk arrangements draw inspiration from such bands as Fleetwood Mac, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Kings of Leon, and Angus & Julia Stone.
Before they met, Kylie had begun playing the piano at the age of 5, but it wasn’t until years later that her childhood memories of Stevie Nicks playing on her parent’s stereo sparked her love for singing. Playing and singing in her bedroom was always a way of releasing emotions behind closed doors, but never did she have the intention nor the courage to take it to the stage. However, after losing a bet to a friend, Kylie found herself singing karaoke in a busy restaurant and never looked back. Dave decided to learn guitar after stumbling across a live performance of BRMC ‘Fault Line’— an acoustic guitar and harmonica alone were such a powerful weapon. It wasn’t until a few years later after a friend gave a copy of Oasis’s rock masterpiece ‘Definitely Maybe’ that he soon realized he wanted to start a band and pursue music professionally.
After recording their Debut EP ‘Leave This Town’ in 2014 the band decided to venture over to the Americana motherland itself, the USA. In June 2016 Desert Sparrow released their 2nd EP 'City of Dreams'. The EP was self-produced and recorded in Los Angeles with engineer Mark Rains (BRMC, Shooter Jennings) at Station House Studios. 'City of Dreams' exhibits their versatility as songwriters to resonate with a universal audience, which Sean McCauley (MondoTunes) cites as “Sonorous, rural, and with roots wrapped deep in the rock 'n' roll tradition, City of Dreams from Desert Sparrow is an EP sure to resonate with fans of many music genres.”
‘City of Dreams’ is now available at over 700 music stores online worldwide.
