Delta

Since Sept. 2011, Delta, a young Niagara-based band has been working hard to get their footing. Finally their hard work has paid off, as their progress shows with an upcoming EP release and excitement for the upcoming year.
The band was originally formed to compliment Americano-country sounds, when Cody Smith and Caleb Regier started playing together after Smith returned to Niagara from Glasgow, Scotland. The band naturally progressed to add three more members which in turn lead to the creation of Delta.
"Everyone just wanted to rock out and the tunes got louder, and we had a great time with it. The bass of the songs are still in the original country-folk format, but obviously when more people are involved, everyone adds their own element to it," said Smith regarding the creation of Delta.
Delta is a self-identified rock-and-roll act that has been busy recording their six song EP and adding shows to their upcoming schedule. They have modestly established their place in the music scene, since Sept. 2011, with their first show at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto.
When talking about musical influences, Delta notes the significance of Canadian rock and roll on their own lives. Regier and Smith talk highly of the Band, the Black Keys, the Tragically Hip, Blue Rodeo and in general, honest Canadian music.
"You can feel it in the music when someone is from Canada. It could be the geography or the wide openness of it, I'm not sure, but there is a feeling that you know its Canadian," said Smith.
Delta members have also has been around St. Catharines for a few years to see the scene with harder rock based bands like Alexisonfire progress into more rock and roll oriented acts. Niagara has formed to accommodate most genres of music, however the dominate form is clearly rock based.
Delta understands there is a home-town crowd in Niagara where people respect good music. At the last show they had in St. Catharines, Smith and Regier were surprised at how many people came out.
"There is something going on in Niagara. St. Catharines is looking a lot better than five years ago. It's really fun. It's the old rock-and-roll sound," said Regier.
Most music resonates strongly with people who feel their honesty. Delta appreciates that honesty when bands are true to their personalities on stage.
"Ego is a deadly thing when you end up having beers backstage instead of with people. We only want to play tunes that we enjoy and be honest," said Regier.
Delta's upcoming EP release will be on March 15 at L3 in St. Catharines, but before that they will be playing the Mansion House on Feb.10 and the Horseshoe Tavern on Feb. 14.
