"listen to a new song from deadbear"

berlin-based producer nick donovan released his latest single as deadbear on monday via cascine’s digital sub-label, cscn. the single’s a-side, “tongues,” builds slowly and features vocal textures from japanese singer qrion, but we were particularly smitten by its b-side, “oo oo.” donovan slowly blurs the main sample of “oo oo” into something barely recognizable over a placid beat before pushing the song’s back half into a cacophonous blend of distorted synthesizers and more persistent drums. take a listen to “oo oo” below. - Dime Store Saints

Manchester-based producer Deadbear decamps to Berlin, releases new single

Initially making ripples with the Wabi Sabi EP on Art Is Hard Records in 2013, Nick Donovan aka Deadbear has enjoyed a fruitful two years in Manchester, including remixing recent Dutch Uncles single Upsilon as well as fellow Memphis Industry signings Barbarossa. Donovan has very recently taken the ever-popular decision to switch to Berlin however, to coincide with his latest single, which has found a home on New York label CSCN. Both sides – the Qrion-featuring Tongues and Oo Oo – once again play to Deadbear's usual strengths, affecting a cut-and-paste, cluttered array of samples and beats that paradoxically create the sense of a gracefully linear journey, although the latter takes a breathtaking twist towards its climax. - The Skinny

"DEADBEAR"

Released on Cascine's digital singles arm CSCN, 'Tongues' is DEADBEAR's collaboration with Japanese artist Qrion, its a nourishing piece of cerebral electronica. - Electric Sound Of Joy

"Qrion Teams Up With Deadbear For “Tongues”"

Qrion has been getting a lot of looks outside of Japan over the last year, and here’s one more bullet point for the resume. The Hokkaido producer has worked with Berlin-based artist Deadbear on the song “Tongues,” a dreamy little number loaded with glockenspiel and distorted vocals. I think Qrion adds a little of her voice (and maybe helps with the other voices being wobbled about), which does add a bit of woozy feel to what would otherwise be just a very nice song to swirl about to. Listen above. - Make Believe Melodies

"Qrion features on 'Tongues' by Berlin producer DEADBEAR [405 Premiere]"

Jumping on board with Berlin producer Nick Donovan aka DEADBEAR for his new track 'Tongues' is Japanese musicmaker Qrion, resulting in luscious selection of percussion thickets strewn along a soundscape of thudding kicks and ambient, glassy synths with wibbling, incomprensible vocal samples weaving in and out. This CSCN-released single also comes with a B-side in the form of the rather stunning 'Oo Oo', a gradual building up into a cliff face of moody explosive synth chords, all the time punctuated by the rhythmic eponymous vocal samples oo-ing into the ticking void of these delicious beats.

All in all, DEADBEAR's debut with CSCN combines meticulous attention to detail with friendly beats, in flavours ranging from spacey chill to simply intense; another example of leftfield modern music curated by the never-failing label. - The 405

Bio

DEADBEAR is the moniker of Berlin-based producer and electronic musician Nick Donovan. Donovan began experimenting with electronic music as part of a university 'laptop orchestra' and later making interactive software (including being commissioned to build an app for CERN's Large Hadron Collider). 2013 saw Donovan release his debut EP on Art is Hard Records featuring collaborations with Alex Hewett (Egyptian Hip Hop) and /please/.

After garnering critical acclaim from BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, The Wire Magazine, Virgin.com, XFM and the NME, Donovan releases his new double single on Cascine's CSCN label. On Focus-single "Tongues" Donovan blends shards of incomprehensible vocals with layers of drums, glockenspiels and electronica found sounds alongside the vocals of Japanese collaborator Qrion - famed for her work with Ryan Hemsworth and her own unique productions. B-side, "Oo Oo" culminates in a storm of distortion and sub-heavy bass beats
